Speaking of random, why is it that when people are making a statement they sometimes randomly follow it up with "But that goes without saying"?

I mean seriously, if it went without saying, then why did you say it? I remember once reading a post where a paragraph was written, then a couple of lines below the poster ends his rant with, "but that goes without saying". WHAT?! Why did you take the time to write it???

The only time that statement makes any sense is when your answering a question. Otherwise, it's ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as when people say "I could care less" when they clearly mean "I could NOT care less".
