Game Notes
The Celtics will host the Sacramento Kings in their first game after learning they will be without Rondo for the rest of the season.  There has been some talk of Keyon Dooling possibly returning to the team and in the meantime, they will stick with a point guard by committee.  Expect Paul Pierce, Jeff Green, Avery Bradley, Courtney Lee, Leandro Barbosa and Jason Terry all to share ball handling duties.  Doc will probably simplify the offense a bit without Rondo to call the plays on the court.

This is the second of 2 meetings between these two teams.   In the first meeting in Sacramento,  the Celtics gave a very lackluster performance.  Rondo was outplayed by Isaiah Thomas.  DeMarcus Cousins logged his first career triple double.   And, most importantly, the Celtics lost 118-96.  They will look to avenge that loss as they take them on at home.

The Celtics have won 4 in a row in Boston vs the Kings.   Both teams are looking for their second straight win and both teams are 4-6 in their last 10 games.  The Celtics are 14-9 at home while the Kings are 5-17 on the road.

Without Rondo, the Celtics should take on a different look. Lee and Sullinger will remain in the starting lineup with Pierce, KG and Bradley.    Even without Rondo, if the team gives the same effort they did against the Heat,  they should get a win in this one.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4484.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4564.jpg)
Courtney Lee vs Tyreke Evans
Evans is an explosive player and Lee needs to play tough defense on him.  Hopefully, Courtney will continue to be as aggressive on both ends of the court as he was in the Heat game.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3007.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4720.jpg)
Kevin Garnett  vs DeMarcus Cousins.
Cousins is a tough and physical player but he's also a young player and a volatile player.  Who knows what would happen if KG gets into his head.  In spite of 3 suspensions already this season, he is a big part of the Kings' game plan and he is averaging 17.6 points and 10.4 rebounds.   KG has to do a better job of guarding Cousins than they did in their first meeting when Cousins recorded his first career triple-double (12 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists).

Keys to the Game
Defense -  Defense is a key to every game and it will be the key to winning the championship.  The Celtics must defend the perimeter as the Kings can be hot from the outside.  They also must defend the paint to keep them from getting tip ins and easy baskets.

Crash the boards - The Celtics need to rebound the basketball.  It takes effort and desire to out rebound the opposing team and when they show the effort and desire on the boards, it usually transfers to the rest of their game as well.  When the Celtics lost to the Kings in Sacramento, they were outrebounded 45-35.  They have to do better if they want to win this one.

Start Strong and Play 48 Minutes
- The Celtics need to get off to a good start.  The Kings are 13-4 when leading at the half and just 3-25 when trailing at the half.  The Celtics need to get off to a good start and then not let up.  They have to stay focused for 48 minutes.

X-Factor
The Rondo Effect
The Celtics have had a few days to digest the fact that they will be without Rondo for the rest of the season.  After practice, Doc said that everyone will need to step up to fill the void that  Rondo leaves with his absence.  Pierce and Jeff Green will need to handle the ball more along with guards Bradley, Barbosa, Lee, and Terry.   How well they do that and how quickly will tell a lot about this team and how the rest of their season will go.

Tp on the work FLC.

I for one have no idea what to expect. Perhaps losing Rondo and being counted out will motivate the unmotivated or maybe nothing will change. This game should be a win if everyone brings the hustle they did last game.

 Official Report
Bennett Salvatore
Bennett Salvatore has been an official in the NBA for the past 30 seasons, and has worked 1,684 regular season and 203 playoff games including 25 NBA Finals games. The veteran official has also worked the 1993 and 2002 NBA All-Star Games, the 1993 McDonald’s Championship in Munich, Germany, and the 1997 Mexico Challenge. Prior to joining the NBA, Salvatore spent two years officiating in the CBA, and also has 10 years officiating high school. Salvatore missed the entire 2011-12 season with an injury.

Salvatore may just be the worst ref in the league, and that is saying alot. Almost always one team or the other gets an advantage when he is officiating and I'll give you a hint, it usually isn't the Celtics.

Salvatore made one of the most controversial calls in NBA finals history in game 5 of the 2006 finals. The call basically gave the Heat their championship. Here is Bill Simmons' take on the call.

Salvatore called the foul on Wade's final drive in overtime (remember, the call where ABC couldn't find a replay to show that anyone touched him?) even though he was standing at midcourt a full 35-40 feet from the play, and even though two other refs were closer to the play. Not only was that NOT his call, he butchered it.

Another of Salvatore's "butchered" calls was in the 2008 conference finals when he waved off a contested 3-pointer that Paul Pierce had hoisted over Richard Hamilton, inducing him to leave his feet with a ball fake and land on Pierce's back. Pierce, however, was charged with an offensive foul for creating the contact with Hamilton.

The Celtics are 1-0 this season and 7-3 in their last 10 games with Salvatore. The win this season was over Portland at home in which the Blazers shot 37 free throws to just 20 for the Celtics. The Kings are 1-0 this season and 3-7 in their last 10 games with Salvatore. His home W/L record is 21-11.

Violet Palmer
Violet Palmer, one of the first two female officials in the NBA, has officiated 798 regular season games and has appeared in nine playoff games over the past 15 seasons. Before joining the NBA, Palmer officiated in the WNBA during the league’s inaugural season, including the 1997 WNBA Championship. She has two years of CBA officiating experience and nine years of collegiate officiating experience, including women’s games in the Pac-10, Western Athletic, West Coast, Big Sky, and Big West Conferences, as well as five NCAA Final Fours and two NCAA Championship games. Before becoming an official, Palmer was a successful basketball player both at the collegiate and high school levels. She was a four-year letter winner at Cal. Poly Pomona, where her team won the NCAA Division II Finals in 1985 and 1986. In addition, she was on the basketball team at Compton High School. Off the court, Palmer is a CCA Manual Mechanics committee member. She also is involved with the City of Los Angeles Youth Referee Clinic in her hometown of Los Angeles. Palmer also acts as a coordinator for both the West Coast Conference and the Pac-10 Conference.

At one time Violet was the worst ref in the league. In one game Cedric Maxwell was moved to urge her to go back into the kitchen because her calls were so bad. She has had Tommy close to exploding many times as well. She's improved a lot over the years and is no longer the worst ref in the league (that honor goes to Bennett Salvatore, who is the lead official in this game) but she's still not a very good ref. Although, after getting a hug from Pierce after he ran into her in a win over the Pacers last season, the Celtics took 20 more free throws than the Pacers.

The Celtics are 1-2 this season and 6-4 over their last 10 games with Violet on the court. The win was at the Knicks where the Celtics took 20 free throws to 26 for the Knicks. At one point, Violet made a series of bad calls prompting Tommy to yell, "Violet, you're a fraud!" The Kings are 2-3 this season and 5-5 over their last 10 with Violet. Her home W/L record this season is 18-10.

Derek Richardson
Derek Richardson has officiated 906 regular season games and one playoff game, as well as the 2003 NBA Rookie Game in Atlanta, during his 15 seasons as an NBA official. Prior to joining the NBA, Richardson spent eight years officiating in the CBA, including the 1996 CBA All-Star game and two games of the 1996 CBA Finals. Richardson played basketball at Los Angeles Southwest College and earned an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. He went on to earn a degree in Administration of Justice from Los Angeles Dominguez Hills. Richardson has volunteered with the South Central Los Angeles YMCA, assisting with youth basketball programs.

Richardson is known for being inconsistent with his calls, especially on charge/block calls. The Celtics are 2-0 this season and 8-2 over their last 10 games with Richardson. The Kings are 1-0 this season and 5-5 over their last 10 games with Richardson as a ref. His home W/L record this season is 17-10.

Bennett and Violet?  That should be illegal.  Tommy better be doing this game.  "Violet, you're a fraud," was the highlight of the season so far.

Haven't seen Salvatore doing a lot of Celtic games lately.

League must be mad that the Heat didn't get enough help.

Thomas and Evans will provide a significant challenge for Lee and Bradley defensively. Thomas is a small super quick guard that avery will really have to work to defend.  Evans is a big,  strong,  crafty 2 guard that could over power Lee. Its going to be an interesting match up. This may be a game where the team is better off defensively without Rondo.

Man this game couldn't come fast enough.  13-odd pages dedicated to a rumor about someone being frusterated was enough to keep me away for a bit...

Anyways, it'll be interesting to see Sully v Cousins right off the tip.  One of the two is bound to be in early foul trouble...

Hmm ... so Bradley and Lee continue as starters.

I like that decision. I think their combined defensive value trumps the offensive boost Terry or Barbosa would provide.

Bradley's injury is clearly hampering him.

He's not playing nearly as aggressively on defense as he used to.  Thomas just blew right by him from a pick that Bradley usually eats up without issue.

Garnett has to provide more help there. Late in the shot clock. Cousins out at the three point line. Gotta help further off of Cousins and stop that dribble drive of Isiah Thomas. Give up the Cousins three.

I don't like how they've let Sacramento inch back into this.

Wasted their initial efforts.

That is fine. I am happy with Cousins taking that 22 foot jumper over Collins.

He'll only make that ... what 36-38% of the time. Keep shooting big fella.

The lack of really good ball handling is worrying.  It's been overblown how we have multiple ball handlers to get the ball up.  Against a team who can run a real pressure, we're going to struggle.  Bradley and Lee's handle aaren't good enough.

Bradley and Lee getting a lot of time on the court which I like.  Some good perimeter defense out of them.

Bass has been setting some p--- poor screens.  He's more focused on slipping and getting his shot than setting a good screen for his teammate.

Bass gives the most lazy p--- poor screens I've ever seen from a Celtic.

I don't like him.
I like his game and think he can be a valuable player for us.  But he's clearly obsessed with his shots at this point and is more focused on popping out to the point of sabotaging the ball handlers ability to score a layup so they are forced to pass to him.  Last year he wasn't playing like this.  He was giving good hard screens and more focused on the team winning.  At least it seemed that way.

Anyways, beautiful ball movement.  You NEVER would see that with Rondo ball hogging.  Easy layup to KG.  Who would have thought.

But they have very nice players like Jason Thompson, Aaron Brooks and Chuck Hayes who go mostly unnoticed. Francisco Garcia is talented also, injury-prone but good player.

Good game by KG and the bench so far, Terry is finding his stroke.

Well, KG is playing great, and then the bench has started the spark. Lee and Pierce weren't playing very well in the first quarter, but after the bench guys (Bass, Green, Terry an Barbosa mainly) + KG have built a lead, they've come to play better.

This has to do a lot with the King's D, awful since the end of the first. Also our guards didn't start the game very well, too much turnovers and bad game direction. Let's hope they just were disoriented by not having Rondo on the court.

We miss Rondo, anyway, and that was obvious at the game start. We're lucky the King's D has helped us to overcome it.

Go Celtics!!!

We miss Rondo, anyways, and that was obvious at the game start. We're lucky the King's D has helped us to overcome it.

Go Celtics!!!

If this is what missing rondo looks like i hope we miss rondo for the rest of the season!

I hope we can get this kind of confidence (2nd quarter) from our guards the rest of the season too... but in the playoffs it will be harder to make up for Rondo's absence.

Of course, Celtics were underachieving, and I want them to play much better, I just hope Rondo is able to watch and learn how to lead this team while making his teammates better when he comes back better than ever.

Go Celtics!!

19 20 assists for the team, 0 for Rondo.

Yes, Sac's defense is lame, yes we are hitting shots, but the point is you don't need a point guard to get assists.

Also, I love Bradley but he hasn't dribbled with his left hand once all night.

People will say "well it was the Kings"

These same KIngs blew us out not so long ago with Rondo.

I think part of it is we're simply way harder to predict/defend without Rondo hogging the ball and killing the offensive flow.

I wasn't here for most of the game, so my big question is:

How much did we attack the rim?

In the very beginning, Bradley shot two FTs and ever since, he hasn't shot any (3 for 10). Have we been just shooting Js again? If so, this may not be so different from when we had Rondo... I really liked the penetration by Lee/'Bosa/Bradley in the Heat game, did it continue tonight? :\
