I’m not as into baseball and ice hockey, so I have a few local sport references on there. But your NBA and NFL heartbreaks are legit

This list seems about right with a couple of small moves. Cs are first for me in Boston sports (obviously), followed by the Pats, Sox, then Bruins. Those 1st two were absolutely killer and I am still unable to wrap my head around them. Aaron Boone, the Welker non-catch, the 21-3 lead on the Colts with Rex Grossman waiting in the SB, end of the Big 3 era...not really the thread you want to start your day with  :'(

I'd maybe bump the 2002 Celts out for whatever year the Bruins blew both 3-0 series and Game 7 leads against the Flyers.

But yeah, that's some heartache on that list for sure.

If we are talking how heartbreaking they were AT THE TIME, I think 2003 Sox has to be first.  The curse was alive and real. And it was a loss to the Yankees.  Winning the next year definitely helps it feel less horrible in retrospect, but at the time there was nothing worse than that loss, at least to me.

Great job and list.

Thing about it is, it wasn’t at least conference finals, so it was really tough to elevate it to heartbreaking for me.

Good thing you limited it to the last 20 years otherwise 1986 Sox would be #1.

I’m not a Pats fan, so I stuck to a top-3:

1. 2010 Celts
2. 2013 Bruins
3. 2003 Sox

2010 was the worst loss I’ve ever felt. Most series / games are usually worth about 24 hours of misery. The Bruins loss stung for maybe a week.  The 2010 Cs loss hurt deeply, making me lose my passion for basketball for 5 or 6 months.

I feel the same way. The Lakers, the title count, the way it all went down 21-6 FT disparity, game called totally different in the 4th, the blown lead. Makes me nauseous just thinking about it

This is a tough exercise, because not all people watch all 4 sports. Furthermore, fewer people are considering all of the big 4 to be on equal ground.

I think it's hard to compare the 2010 Celtics to the 2007 Patriots or 2003 Red Sox losses. The biggest losses in my lifetime were the 86 Sox, 07 Patriots, and 03 Sox.

While the Lakers loss hurt badly (b/c they could have won easily), they just won a ring 2 years prior. Same logic with the 2013 Bruins.

Definitely the most awful of my lifetime.

I really hated losing to the Lakers in 85, but that was much more anger than pure heartbreak.

This is easy.

I don't follow the Bradies - er- Patriots....or the Red Sox or the Bruins.

But the Celtics?

2010, easily - for me.

Dancin' Joey and The Heartbreakers.

2010 Celtics were so brutal.  Watching Artest beat us and seeing Rasheed wear down in real time.  The Lakers bruised us inside and you saw it coming.  But Artest hitting those big shots was just brutal to watch.

Still so tough because that team deserved more than 1 championship.

2010 Celtics and 2013 Bruins all time hall of shame/choke jobs

2010 Celts were well under control at home and then in the 4th...  I was like "this isn't real life"

2013 Bruins up 3-0 ....  in a blink of an eye series tied 3-3.   7th game, Bruins score the first 3-0.  Then Flyers storm back to win 4-3 (how fitting).  One of the biggest choke jobs in history of sports.   I almost burnt my jersey

I am exactly the same about baseball and hockey.   Agree with OP on the order of the only losses on the last 20 years that I thought were "heartbreaking":

2010 Celtics and 2007 Pats equally heartbreaking

2011 Pats

Lots of others were disappointing (including the 2017 Pats, the 2018 and 2012 Celtics) but nothing else was really heartbreaking for me -- probably all the way back to the 1987 Celtics.

Man, those '10 C's and '07 Pats are still nightmare fuel.

I think the 2010 Celtics is probably my worst. Couldn't bring myself to be interested in basketball for a while after that

2007 Patriots was brutal. 18-0 and then the G-Men broke our hearts.

Still feels awful to think about their D-Line just hitting/sacking Brady almost every play it seems.

I was only 8-9 years old at the time, and actually had tears in my eyes that night and was really sad. What could have been if we'd gone perfect that year...  :'(

And now it's like you have PTSD when you think of the Giants in the playoffs LOL.

Worst losses in Celtics history are Len Bias 1986 and Reggie Lewis 1993.

I think the basketball gods are smiling on us with Jaylen Brown (Reggie) and Jayson Tatum (Bias) in Green.

Seeing those two perform this season is starting to take the sting out, some.

These two could very well be bedrocks of the next 2-3 titles in Boston.

1) 2010 Celtics
2) 1973 Celtics
3) 1987 Celtics - Game 4 & McHale's fumbled free-throw rebound
4) 1975 Celtics
5) 2011 Celtics - after stupid trade that cost a Banner
6) Len Bias

Of course Jeff Green shows up meaningfully, for the first time in his career, against us in the 2018 ECF... Ugh...

2010 Celtics by far.  This one was not just heartbreaking but it p---ed all of us off because of the way it was stolen from us by the refs.

2010 Celtics (Game 7 Finals)
1973 Celtics (Game 7 ECF)
1987 Celtics (Game 4 Finals)
2011 Celtics (Trading Kendrick Perkins)
2013 Bruins (Game 6)

Oh sorry, you said last 20 years.
1973 and the lost FT rebound by McHale at the end of Game 4 in '87 were too painful for me to leave out.
