I always wondered why Celtic is pronounced "Sell-tick" versus the European "Kell-tick" - anyone got ideas?

People back then didn't have the internet.  Folks didn't know any better.  They just went about making decisions willy nilly.

If you look at the expansion, or re-branded (IE wizards) teams it's funny how lame the names have gotten.

JEEZ, Toronto named their team after a popular movie!  If I started a franchise I would have a much better name.  Like The Baby Makers.

Anyways, good post, some of this was new to me.

Alas, they folded after only 3 seasons. They weren't very good.

I'd love to see a pro sport team in Rhode Island. The state is so rich in history, but gets no love from the rest of the nation.

Ah, but whatever happened to the Providence Steamrollers.

their moniker was somewhat prophetic, wouldn't you agree?

They ran out of steam?
OR... Steamrolled themselves?

the heat should change their name to the orangemen. every league in existence has an orangemen team . they toss you the orange shirt. who you gonna be? what else could you be? so you just end up the orangemen. has anyone here not been an orangeman at one point?
utah jazz is silly. they should be the church states. or maybe the poly-ballers.
washington should scrap the lavender "wizards" name, stop being wusses and go straight past the "bullets" and be the "hand grenades".memphis flying elvises, and los angeles "stupid faces".

Cavs should have been Steamers instead.

i agree...having grown up in ohio and living an hour away from cleveland, the first thing you notice when you arrive there is how dirty the town is.  it's an old industrial city and the name would have been perfect.

as an aside, i miss the old richfield coliseum...it was located about 20-30 minutes outside of cleveland.  when they put (then) gund arena next to the baseball stadium it was just different, and many people really didn't like the hassles of getting downtown.

Completely agree, I am down in the Akron/Canton area and it was MUCH easier to get to the Coliseum.  The Gund is cold/lifeless and too many business people there.  I can't tell you how many times I've been told to be quite because someone was on the cell phone.  That just makes me cheer that much louder.
