Some people take the internet way to seriously.

This is what we (yes, I say we, because I take it seriously, too) hear every time. Why can't it be a serious thing?

Another thing: Every time a thread like this comes up, I feel like some people here are stroking the egos of the mods by saying stuff like "If you don't like it here, you can just leave" or whatever. You should be glad that people take CB seriously, it just means it's more than "the Internet".

This is not meant as a criticism towards any of the mods, I respect the job you do and after all it's Jeff's place and his rules. Sometimes I hate the rules but without the rules, this would be a chaotic place.

I hope you will be back, Brick. I didn't always agree with you but I liked most of what you had to say anyway.

From my perspective, I don't think people voice their opinion to "stroke the ego of the mods".  Rather, I think they say what they do because it's genuinely their opinion.  Obviously, reasonable minds can have differing opinions; just because somebody agrees with us doesn't mean that folks should doubt their motives.

That being said, Roy Hobbs is such a swell guy.

That (along with all the other "ego stroking" for Roy) goes here.

I don't usually pay much mind to these "goodbye" threads, but Brick?  Wow!!!  :o

Brick you may not remember this, but you were the first poster I ever interacted with on this blog's forums, back in early 2007.  You were already a legend here back then, this blog will NOT be the same place without you.

Just went and read the first two pages of your "previous posts," it's right there in black & white, you have brought such a great perspective to this blog over the years.  Thank you Brick, very very sorry to see you go...

This is so odd..

Brick was one of the posters that I first interacted with as well..back in Oct09.

I remember it vividly---he was in a heated discussion with a few other posters about an issue dealing with Antoine Walker's Love of Chicken, of all things ;D

Some of the threads lately dealing with politics have certainly been fiery, but these thoughts are just that - thoughts of the community here. I have certainly read them, and even wanted to comment on a few, but chose not to.

The Mods here I think face daily challenges - to provide a community to where we all can voice our opinions, but at the same time keep it sane enough to allow folks here to comment.

The Blog in itself is a reflection of society as a whole, I think, and the rules here present a level playing ground for all I suppose.

I came from 20 + years of rules - the U.S. Navy, so I know all about them. In the service, these rules many times were meant to keep us alive.

In any event, I wish you'd reconsider. But if you don't then God Bless you and I wish you the best.

I love the fact that they allow for political debates here. It makes the bolg so much more interesting. I don't know of any other sports blog that allows this and I want to say thanks to Jeff and all the others for providing a place were we can have discussions on impotnat matters.

What did you do in the Navy?

My bad wasn't blowing you off, something came up.

Operations Specialist..dealt with monitoring radar, some of us controlled aircraft..some managed data bases in support of exercises.  Official Job description: To process, display, dissiminate Combat Information.

I was just curious because most of my family was and is in the Navy. One brother of mine served on the Pennsylvania, my dad was a radar man on a destroyer, another brother was stationed in Burmuda(never served on a ship), and my nephew is a Corpsman(that's kôr'mən incase our pres is here ;D). Thanks for the service to the country- and a TP
Still don't believe in Joe.

Hey,
Sorry to see you go. I'm not really here often enough to know all the posters, so I still can't tell Bo from Bud from Brick, and I didn't even know there was a "current events" area.
I very rarely get into the political discussions because I come here for the basketball talk. Also, I'm way over on the left politically and it seems that "socialist" is a dirty word these days. And apparently anyone who wants any government at all is a socialist to some people ::)
Anyway, why not just stay for the C's talk?

I don't understand what this has to do with the mods' egos or anything. Some people just simply dislike people who whine about how "unjust" they've been treated, about how everyone is against them, about how they're being censored, etc. And most of the time, they've either been on the wrong or had it coming.

You know, if I'd thought the person complaining had some legitimacy to his claims, etc. I would sympathize with his complaints and on how he was treated. But I've yet to see the case were this is so when grievances are made public like this, and certainly this case is one of those where the member was in the wrong by breaking the rules and not heeding to the continuous warnings he had been given by numerous people.

It's just needless drama, and for those that feel the need to do an "rage exit" type of thing, I really feel no sympathy because it's disruptive and I find that drama as having zero business in a forum. But hey, in the end of the day it's a bit of fun talking trash openly.

If I were the mods of this place, I would've locked, banned the person, and deleted this thread from the get-go, particularly since he was attacking some of the mods personally. But that just me. I think it says something about the mods that they've let it stand as is. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, well each will have their opinions. I think I've mentioned enough times my personal feelings on these types of matters, and they're not in accordance to the feelings of the mods.

So if you can, because I'm curious, what does this have to do with the ego of the mods? Or did I misunderstand?

My point was, the mods will take whatever necessary action they feel need to be taken, regardless of what people like me (or anyone else) say. Those are the rules. Whether or not some posters feel that other posters whine, well, that's up to them. Me personally, I would never call someone out in person. Maybe I am just reading too much into it. If people want to support the mods, great. I support the mods, too. I have nothing but respect for what they do. I really don't care if people believe me or not, because it's the truth. I hope that answers your question.

I hope that answers your question.

See, the problem here is that I don't mind people challenging the rules. Or even questioning them. We have an open thread for that if needed be.

I have a problem with how they go about it. Staring threads crying about unfairness and how things were mishandled, attacking the mods, etc. when clearly stated rules were broken is not the way to go, and I frown upon it. When I break a rule, I get a pm or an edit in my post, and I move on. Those are the rules. If I don't like a rule, I would make a thread and make some CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms... I wouldn't go attacking the site, and it's mods like many times it happens.

And yes, mods will take whatever necessary action they feel needs to be taken, but that doesn't mean that our suggestions fall into deaf ears... though it might seem that way at times. And yes, some of those "if you don't like it, then leave" comments might actually be equally unproductive, but then again I go back to how the complaint was lodge in the first place. Because many times drama is brought forward about the littlest and most meaningless of things, and I think at times you need to just put a stop to the nonsense.

And in cases like this one in particular, a "if you don't like it, then leave" seems about appropriate given how Brick has handled himself in my opinion.

Seems like we lose a lot of good posters because of the current events part of the forum. Just shut the thing down. Debating politics and religion is never a good idea.

We have a policy of not publicly discussing the specifics of discipline on here, and there's no reason to change that policy.  Sadly, this is one of those times the staff can't really defend itself, even though its warranted.  For those who are interested, though, there's a long public record in the Current Events forum that folks can review on their own.

I'll be sad to see Brick go, but in the end, its his choice.  Our decisions related to this site (in the Current Events forum and elsewhere) come down to one thing:  we have rules here, and nobody -- including long-standing, respected members -- are above those rules.  Unfortunately, the staff is required to enforce those rules, and we can only bend over backwards to save posters from themselves so many times. Eventually, we're required to take actions that we don't like to take, and that's unfortunate.

As always, it sucks anytime a member -- long-term or otherwise -- leaves, but that's a fact of life in an internet community.  Brick will be missed, and he's welcome to reconsider any time that he'd like.

You realize this is an internet forum, right? I rarely ever read or post in them, but my god, it seems like every time I do, you have to try to impose your will on every conversation. As if you are thirsty for power. And you almost... no, you do it in condescending fashion as well.

It's an internet forum, guy. Stop acting like the corporate shrewd leading a multi-million dollar company. If you need this kind of thing to make you feel in control, I don't know what to tell you.

They're quite fine. It's people that can't adhere to the rules that seem to have a problem with it. I don't see why people who have been enjoying those discussions respectfully and following the rules should be punished by the few who can't.

I've noticed this a few times now when someone puts up an I'm leaving thread - generally the other posters try to convince the person to reconsider, stay, come back (and sometimes they thankfully do) yet often times the mods say happy trails, come back if you want (not, please reconsider your leaving) it's subtle, but I'm wondering if it's part of policy or more just a personal feeling

Well, I can't speak for other mods, but personally, I find "goodbye" threads to be at best, needy, cries for attention, and at worst, passive-aggressive attacks on members of the site, or staff.  So I tend to not feel much of a need to be positive in them.

This means nothing about what I think of Brick, and whether I want him to return, but I have no need for threads like this.

Seems to me like you're the one who doesn't know what an Internet Forum is and how it should comport itself.

I think people just can't handle a good argument and debate.

Personally, I am with you.  But we had a large contingent who disagreed, and wanted the political forum to return a couple years ago.  You can't make everyone happy.
