I don't think Baby needs replacing. He needs augmenting, or potentially trading. It's not his fault he's 6'7", even if he is 300lbs. We need 15 minutes of hieght, which is why i'm perplexed we didn't make an offer to Deke (there must a story there -- like, 'if we give you x, will you sign?' 'well, i owe it to houston to go back to them' or whatever).

He is who he is, and he's a valuable role guy. Not like he's getting any help from the rest of the 2nd unit....

We did offer Deke, he declined.

What evidence do you have of that?

there were several articles that qouted both doc and danny saying that they had talked with his agent, and that he wasent intersted in coming to boston.

there were also a number of articles that indicated that they never made him an offer, including one where deke himself (not that we must believe him) stated that he had interest in the Cs, but they weren't ready to commit as they wanted to keep their options open for now.

so at best you could be right that they didn't offer because his agent said don't bother.

Deke was never coming here for the vet min, which is all we could have offered.

He makes the min in Houston. I'm not telling you i think he was ever coming here (as evidenced in my post above), just pointing out that PR has told us the Cs never made him an offer:

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2009/01/04/help_wanted_but_theres_no_big_hurry/

he also loves the houston area and the rockets.

that article is from very early in the process. show me the one from near the end when doc and danny were letting it be known that he wasen't comming here that says they didn't want/had made an offer.

Within that article is this from Mutombo:

Quote
"Boston wasn't ready. I think they will want to do something at the end of January. I think they're interested in four guys and then will pick one."

I wonder how much credence we can put in this. Perhaps they expect a target among the non-guaranteed crowd to become available.

I don't see Mourning signing anywhere but Miami, and Horry seems like a long shot.

the article is from 3 days ago. this is a pointless discussion. i started it by saying they knew he was going back to houston which is why they didn't make him an 'offer'.

Shawn Livingston was acquired by the Grizzlies today. Apparently, he did not pass waivers, so Miami and Memphis hashed out a trade to make it happen.

http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/56461/20090107/grizzlies_acquire_shaun_livingston_in_trade/

Miami sent cash and Livingston to Memphis for a conditional 2nd rounder in 2012.

Darius Miles was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies.

http://www.thememphisedge.com/2009/01/06/grizzlies-waive-miles/

So far, he may be the most interesting player.  Although I think he looked a long way away in the preseason, if he has continued to progress, he might be worth a look on a 10 day contract, now that his suspension has ended.

Of course I have a feeling Walker could give us more at this point.

Memphis had all kind of incentives to keep Miles:
- they'd take Portland out of the FA market next Summer (they're one of their few competitors)
- what they'd receive from the luxury tax revenue (by sending the Blazers into tax territory) would be enough to play half of Miles' salary
- they're a bad basketball team (their record is better than what they deserve) that can use any semi-decent player

However, not even all those factors were enough to convince Wallace to keep him. Although I didn't watch Miles playing for them, what I saw in the pre-season, as I repeatedly said, was someone very, very far from being athletic enough to play pro basketball (and not only in the NBA, I'm pretty sure that the pre-season Miles wouldn't find a spot in the Portuguese domestic league, for example). Unless he improved his condition by a lot since then, I can't see him anywhere near to contribute.

I'd like to see Starbury and either Walker or Giddens brought in. Unfortunately that still leaves us short one big man. If we did bring in Starbury who gets cut? If we bring in Walker or Giddens to see time who doesn't get to dress, that currently is suiting up?
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I posted this information in another thread, I thought it might be useful here since Lucky17 mentioned the thread and since it's a sticky thread covering these players over the next few days, so I re-posted it here.

Here's the list ESPN made on their weekend dime of players with non-guaranteed contracts.

Quote
All contracts are guaranteed for the rest of the season if a player is on a roster as of Jan. 10 or has not cleared waivers before 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan 9.

Teams will thus be required to shed any player deemed surplus to requirements by 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The 25 players facing the greatest risk over the next few days, all of whom are working on minimum deals:

Mario West (Atlanta); Juwan Howard (Charlotte); Lindsey Hunter and Michael Ruffin (Chicago); Jawad Williams (Cleveland); Rob Kurz, Anthony Morrow, DeMarcus Nelson and C.J. Watson (Golden State); Von Wafer (Houston); Paul Davis and Fred Jones (Los Angeles Clippers); Josh Powell (Los Angeles Lakers); Darius Miles (Memphis); Shaun Livingston and Jamaal Magloire (Miami); Austin Croshere (Milwaukee); Kevin Ollie (Minnesota); Sean Marks (New Orleans); Jeremy Richardson (Orlando); Dee Brown (Phoenix); Malik Hairston and Anthony Tolliver (San Antonio); Jake Voskuhl (Toronto); Juan Dixon (Washington).

Thanks for the post. There a few guards on there I like (Hunter, Watson, Ollie) but I doubt they are cut or that it'd make sense to cut Pruitt or Cassell just to add them.

The rest is crap.

Jawad Williams waived by Cleveland.

Also, the Clippers trade a 2nd round pick to Toronto for Hassan Adams, then waive him. They also got some cash from Toronto, which is nice.

That makes a couple trades today of cash and 2nd round picks for players that were eventually waived by their new teams.

can someone explain to me the purpose of trading for him in the first place? I don't get it.

They sold a second round pick.  So it was for the cash...

Yep. Teams that have trade exceptions or are under the cap can take on payroll in exchange for cash considerations.

Exactly.  And for a team like Miami, who is hovering right around the luxury tax threshold, this makes a lot of sense.  They can pay a little extra cash, for another team to take the salary for them, and keep them below the threshold...meaning they get revenue sharing.
