The Boston Celtics have reportedly cut camp invitee Denzel Valentine to make room for their signing of veteran big man Blake Griffin according to new reporting from The Athletic NBA insiders Jared Weiss and Shams Charania.

Valentine is the odd man out.  Goukii will be happy.

Griffin > Jabari.

Griffin >  Enes.

Just based on that the Celtics are already better as a team.

He cannot switch on defense or defend the perimeter. However, he ranked very high in stats as an interior defender last season. As a back up center for 10-15 minutes until TL returns he should be fine.

Interestingly, Griffin, White, and Smart all are very good at taking charges.

He did start 20 games last season (for a playoff team, I guess.)

An all right pick setter, and occasional roller.

I have no trouble with this signing and whoever is bumped from the team is not really NBA material anyway.

Can he shoot the 3-ball well is the other question  ;)
He was never a great three point shooter but shot 34% for the 5-6 years prior to last year.
Yeah, not sure what happened last year (26%) but if he can get back to his career average 33%, he will be good for this team.

From the same source: Al Horford at 12.2% and Kyle Lowry at 85.7%, so I don't know what this means.

I would say no, but...

Consider what it would do for his chances if the C's won the title and he was able to come through as a productive rotation player that held up under pressure.

I think he's had too many injuries to be a realistic candidate. But I don't vote

I think he works well as the guy who can help reduce Horford's regular season minutes.   He clearly would be a better fit playing Horford's defensive role the Rob Williams.    And early in the season,  can Horford play more time as the roomer position that Rob plays while Blake bodies up the biggest man.
Less switching 1-5.   Maybe just1-4

If he playing in the playoffs, the Celtics may be in trouble.

Griffin was an all-star level player 4 years ago. Then he had knee problems that left him in a state where he couldn't even dunk during game action for quite some time. It seemed to me that his conditioning gradually improved through last year to the point where, while he was no longer an athletic big, but he got back some of that mobility, and could compete physically. He finally started dunking again later in the year.

A small improvement in his conditioning would be a big deal here. He's hasn't put on many miles in the last 4 years, and he plays with intelligence. He's never going to be a star again, he might surprise some people if he has applied himself to getting ready. With a bit of luck, it's possible he could be a useful rotation big.

Griffin on #Celtics atmosphere: “The amount of maturity and welcoming. It’s a different atmosphere that I’m sort of used to, in a good way. Practice was focused, very encouraging and helpful. You don’t take that for granted because it’s not always the case everywhere you go”

That's cool to hear.  Glad he feels welcome.

Before we signed him, he was not really on my radar.  I was thinking of about 5 other vet bigs before him.  But now that we have him, I am pretty happy with it (yes, classic fan reaction).  I don't really see him as any better or worse than say Cousins or Howard in terms of pure basketball but he always plays with heart and without baggage and that tends to be contagious (as is the opposite).  His comments further this.  He just wants to play basketball.

I felt that conditioning was an issue in the playoffs last season.  He could play well for 5 minutes and then was gassed.  We may not need much more than that from him, at least once RWill is back.  He is 33 with 12 seasons of mileage.  His minutes will have to be heavily managed but that is OK for what his expected role is on the team.

Looking forward to seeing him play.
