It’s not a very generous benefits package up front. And, I would take it a bit personally that you and the new hire are at the same level of vesting.
That said, I have no idea how much more / less you’d be making in a Roth compared to a modest employer match. And, if this is a long term job for you, the 100% match after six years is decent.
Talk to HR, too. Do you need to max out to vest, or is any amount in your 401k every year enough?
And, just for perspective: our 401k is up 18.98% since January 1, and up 27.36% in the past year. Even a 20% match can add up.
