Vucevic is very much a Brad Stevens type of center. I can see this happening.
I didn’t realize he averaged 3.8 assists last year. I could definitely see him being a guy they want to put next to the Jays.
That said he is almost 29... why not just pay Horford?
29 is very different than 33. A Vucevic signing is would be very much like the Horford deal from 3 years ago. As others have mentioned, he checks off a lot of boxes that Stevens likes in a big man. I also didn't realize how impressive his defensive advanced stats were last season.
We lose a lot of defensive versatility on defense with Horford, but maybe the elite rebounding from Vucevic would make up for it. A defensive backcourt of Smart and Brown should also ease some pressure for our interior defenders.
That is true, and if the hope is that we will once again be contenders by the time he hits Horford’s current age it makes sense.
That said, if the goal is to simply develop the Js over the next few years, I don’t know if maxing Vucevic would put us in a much better spot.
I wouldn’t be against it if we do lose Horford. The rebounding is a huge plus.
I think it would be smart to make the signing, as opposed to being too careful with contracts. Realistically, the Celtics should be in a prime spot as long as both J's reach their potential. At that point I'm confident that Ainge can fill out the rest of the roster properly. If they don't become All-Stars then we're kind of screwed either way.
Another thing to consider is the potential salary cap increase over the next few seasons. It's projected to be $127 million by 2022-23, which means that a Vucevic deal at $27 million per year wont be too crippling. Who knows, maybe it would become salary filler in a future deal.
