ESPN Sources: The Hawks are finalizing a trade to send F/C John Collins to the Jazz for Rudy Gay and a future second-round pick. Atlanta’s largely unloading Collins’ three years, $78M for some roster building flexibility and alignment with looming changes to salary cap.

That is a pretty cool trade for a team that already has Markkanen, Olynyk, Kessler and the 6-9 PF they just drafted whose name escapes me.

Loads of power forwards. 4 PFs. 2 who will want 35mpg. 2 who are worth 25-30mpg.

I guess they are going to be playing big at forward all season. Shades of the 1990s with NY playing A Mason, Oakley, C Smith only this Utah team is the finesse version of that.

Wow, talk about a salary dump.  At least ATL didn't have to attach a pick like SAC did to unload Richaun Holmes, but a second round pick for Collins?  I am stunned.  I guess there are going to be a lot of crazy deals going on with the new CBA.

Now let's see if Utah can get anything out of Collins.  If he plays even decent in Utah, they will be able to flip him at the trade deadline or next off season and really make out.  And if he continues to wallow, they lose nothing.

That is a big versatile frontcourt.

I expect it'll be something similar to what Vanderbilt and Kessler went through together but not as severe. They both did well when the other one was off the floor but struggled to play together because neither could shoot.

J Collins can shoot but his best play is 15 feet and in. I thought he struggled with Capela for that reason and I expect him to have some similar issues with Kessler. That said, I love the fit for him when Utah go smaller with Olynyk at center or Markkanen at center. The interior will be wide open for him to exploit.

And while Kessler and J Collins is not ideal offensively, it is nowhere near as bad as Vanderbilt who can't shoot a lick outside the paint. J Collins is at least a low volume threat from 3. Not that comfortable with it but he can take and make some outside shots to provide some spacing.

Utah are doing some fun things with that frontcourt. Highly skilled highly versatile offensive threats. You see what they do offensively with all that ball movement and unpredictability in their attack and you can see how both Taylor Hendricks and J Collins fit into that game plan beautifully.

Those four guys - Markkanen, Olynyk, J Collins, Taylor Hendricks - are going to be difficult to play against. And then they got the big fella Kessler to do the dirty work in the paint that none of them do well. Fun mix in the froncourt.

It is going to be difficult for most teams to matchup against that size, skill and versatility.

Not wild about their backcourt though.

Lol. We've been hearing about a John Collins trade for years and this is the big return?

What does Atlanta do without John Collins?

Do they start Jalen Johnson at PF? Or do they go smaller and move DeAndre Hunter up to PF and start Saddiq Bey at SF?

I feel D Hunter is best offensively at PF but I have unimpressed with ATL's defense & rebounding with him there. Too small. Too slow. Doesn't rebound well enough. Makes ATL vulnerable on D and the boards.

That is a big versatile frontcourt.

This is back to Markkanen playing the role he had in CLE.  Part of why Markkanen was able to blossom in Utah was that he wasn't forced to play SF anymore, or play forward with two other bigs.  I don't know how they work this out but Markkanen should be playing as a floor stretching big, like Porzingis.  Maybe Collins will need to come off the bench, I bet he will love that.

This could affect Grant Williams. Apparently Kuzma was supposed to get interest from Utah in FA, but with Collins they're off the list. Supposedly Indy - a supposed Grant suitor - will now focus on Kuzma.
