Good topic. I work in the financial field however the upheaval in the financial world is making me second guess my future somewhat. I'm curious about hearing stories if people had major career changes due to changes in the economy over the past couple years.

1) Proyect manajer for a protected areas worldbank proyect.

Well, as it happens to be, I'm working on a totally new portfolio website, I'll show it to ya soon, I'm sure you'll love it. I'm a lot of things at my company, and I work for a webdesign company.
Alright, I don't want to be a poser with all of the titles I've been given (since none are related to education) but I'm:
1) User interface designer
- I use Photoshop and other graphics software to design everything from intranets and websites to applications
2) Front end developer
- I am proficient in HTML and CSS coding and thus I not only make the layout, but I make it look good for the web as well
3) Content Management System implementation specialist (don't ask, I didn't come up with the titles)
- I tie up the back-end of applications with the front-end of them
4) Graphic consultant
- Not sure if that's the correct translation, but in short; I give people advice on the looks of their websites.
With all of the above come a lot of side-tracks, like writing test-cases, some project management tasks, brainstorm sessions and some print media design (like business cards, flyers and folders.)
I do these things both 40 hours a week for a boss, and do them on freelance base as well.

I'm looking at Bangor, just because the legal market is a little less saturated up there. I love southern Maine, though; I went to high school in Kennebunk, and worked as an attorney for awhile in Saco. The farthest north I've lived is Waterville, so Bangor will be a completely new experience.

I had not realized how much my oldest son has grown until recently, lol..it is nice to be on dry land!

Last year I applied (and interviewed) to become the Maine judiciary's CIO. Would have been nice to get that and move back home/back east. I'll be rooting for ya Roy -- and Grover!

I worked for several years in standardized testing/educational assessment. I have since moved back to the classroom...As interesting as it was working in the corporate side of things, working with students is much more rewarding (and a little frustrating, too :0)

Spent all of last weekend learning to administer the Woodcock Johnson test (yeh, that name is Beavis & Butthead's dream come true)
I'm 13 months into a 2 year Masters program for K-8 Moderate Special Needs. I recently closed up shop for a record store biz that I ran for 14 years. I've been substitute teaching, and looking for work as an aide.
Loving what I'm doing though.

Wow ... I never knew you were from this area! I actually lived briefly on Brown Street in Kennebunk, and also lived in Waterville, (I had a music store about a block from Al Corey's and a rock band there when I was very young and foolish ... our manager at the time was a local attorney who took a liking to our "sound" ... but that was lifetimes ago. You're right about the market being saturated in Greater Portland, but it's tough to beat city-wise ... most of the best things of the big city, but small enough to feel homey and a quick ride to fresh air and spaces. (Our version of Camden is a bit nicer than New Jersey's, also ;)). Bangor's a great town, too, and Pat's Pizza in Old Town is truly amazing, (just ask Lonely Toaster), I'm sure you'll love it. I personally just can't be that far away from the ocean ... just something deep in the soul that hooked me as a kid ... I turned down some good colleges because they were "inland" ... I know, a bit extreme, but the sea is almost as much a part of me and my family as music is. Anyway ... if I can be of any assistance with your relocation, please let me know ... it will be a boost to this great state of ours to have you back among it's citizenry. We should consider having a CelticsBlog get-together once a year (or so) of all the Mainiacs who are members ... there seems to be quite a few.

Funny you mention that Prof because I'm in the process of adopting another boxer and the avatar will probably have to change to include a picture with both of them.
I might someday, when I get out of Everett, start a kennel for rescuing boxers. So I guess that might actually be what I do sometime in the future. Definitely, when I retire I'll be doing it, but I hope to before that.

That's a really cool goal. I'm also an obsessed dog lover btw (and animals in general.) I have a mutt we adopted from an agency in Tennessee. We really lucked out, amazing temperment, independent but really affectionate and adaptable, very trainable, very very fast, and insane about tennis balls. He's about 65 pounds, just a tad too big to be a lap dog, but small enough where he is not intimidating at all. His name is Oliver.

I'm a student - a junior at UMass Amherst. My major is Economics.

First and foremost, I am a musician/songwriter ... my main instrument is guitar, but I also play keys, bass, drums, and sax. I haven't played in a band for a long time, (but have kept writing and subbing here-and-there), but I'm at a point in my life where I'm starting to play out again, and I love it!
I'm also a semi-retired otolaryngological (E,N&T) surgeon, ("Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"), but I honestly am not happy in medicine ... the only fulfillment I've ever received from it was in situations outside of the hospital setting, and I'll leave it at that.
Business-wise I am a gemologist and for the last couple of years have been building an internet business selling diamonds and gemstones online, and primarily overseas. This is the focus of my income-producing energies as I wanted something I could run from a laptop, that would allow me to travel, concentrate on music again, and start a new family, as I am recently engaged.
(I wanted to share her pic here, but she asked me to remove it - she is filipina and very shy about such things ... my bad, I'm learning ;)).

I'm currently contracted on with a company on a documentary, called 'A Life Worth Living,' that won ITVS grant funding and will be aired on PBS/WGBH after September 2010. The documentary follows the disability rights movement as it develops post world war II right up until the late 1990's. It's been a staggeringly rewarding and humbling experience and allowed me to meet and interview some of the most incredible people I've ever met in my life. 2. My second job is as an RA (resident advisor) living and working at an International school of 450 students located in Boston. I regularly spend Friday nights dealing with disasters and emergencies of students getting alcohol poisoning, breaking up parties, students being locked out, being woken up by security to deal with some new form of madness, fire alarms where I have to key into every room on my floor and ensure students are out before I get to leave the building, etc. I also have to work at the reception desk for about 70 hours per month, welcome and check in new students, arrange their checkouts when they leave, and help them with whatever problems they may have. It's a really crazy job, I've seen and dealt with some situations that are too messed up to describe hear, but also met some of the most incredible and influential people of my life. I have friends all over the world and am exposed constantly to new students from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures. I also don't have to pay rent or utilities, get a room to myself with a my own bathroom, and three free (albeit very bad) meals a day. I'm paid about $180 a month for all that crisis management. I was also allowed to transfer for the summer to our Barcelona school location (although it was a disastrous experience.) Working here for the last three years has created a set of memories and friendships that I will cherish and remember always. (Plus I'm a travel junky, and spend all the money I work for and save on traveling, lived in Italy for two years, and speak three languages very well, so the international scene really works for me.)
3. The last job I have, although its on pause for the moment, is that I own/run/share a film company with my brother (better known as Reggies Ghost around here) called Realeyez Independent Cinema. We're both involved in separate projects at the moment unfortunately. I'm obviously biased, but my brother is one of the most talented cinematographers/editors I've ever seen. Lets put it this way, he sucks at making signatures compared to his abilities when it comes to film. (I told you I was biased) He is entirely responsible for the trailer you saw above.
It's a really fun line of work and we're still in the process of getting our company (which is only about five years old) off the ground. It's a hard industry to break into, but we did win a film competition for IFC last year and they gave us the chance to make a five episode webseries for them. It was really fun (even though it was under budgeted) if you want to check it out, the episodes are only five minutes long each:

Anyway, our film company has a focus on social justice, and we don't shy away from anything. We've worked on and aspire to do it all - narratives (both short and full length feature,) documentaries, music videos, animated films, etc. All with a focus on advancing the voices often times not represented by mainstream media. I've lived a life of modest yet good fortune, growing up in the U.S. a white male in a middle class family (which I see as lucky,) and I hope that I can use whatever manner of success I can find in film to help give back to those who may have not been given the advantages I have been afforded in life. I also don't have to pay rent or utilities, get a room to myself with a my own bathroom, and three free (albeit very bad) meals a day. I'm paid about $180 a month for all that crisis management. I was also allowed to transfer for the summer to our Barcelona school location (although it was a disastrous experience.) Working here for the last three years has created a set of memories and friendships that I will cherish and remember always. (Plus I'm a travel junky, and spend all the money I work for and save on traveling, lived in Italy for two years, and speak three languages very well, so the international scene really works for me.)
3. The last job I have, although its on pause for the moment, is that I own/run/share a film company with my brother (better known as Reggies Ghost around here) called Realeyez Independent Cinema. We're both involved in separate projects at the moment unfortunately. I'm obviously biased, but my brother is one of the most talented cinematographers/editors I've ever seen. Lets put it this way, he sucks at making signatures compared to his abilities when it comes to film. (I told you I was biased) He is entirely responsible for the trailer you saw above.
It's a really fun line of work and we're still in the process of getting our company (which is only about five years old) off the ground. It's a hard industry to break into, but we did win a film competition for IFC last year and they gave us the chance to make a five episode webseries for them. Anyway, our film company has a focus on social justice, and we don't shy away from anything. We've worked on and aspire to do it all - narratives (both short and full length feature,) documentaries, music videos, animated films, etc. All with a focus on advancing the voices often times not represented by mainstream media. I've lived a life of modest yet good fortune, growing up in the U.S. a white male in a middle class family (which I see as lucky,) and I hope that I can use whatever manner of success I can find in film to help give back to those who may have not been given the advantages I have been afforded in life. I worked for several years in standardized testing/educational assessment. I have since moved back to the classroom...As interesting as it was working in the corporate side of things, working with students is much more rewarding (and a little frustrating, too :0)

I'm 13 months into a 2 year Masters program for K-8 Moderate Special Needs. I recently closed up shop for a record store biz that I ran for 14 years. I've been substitute teaching, and looking for work as an aide.
Loving what I'm doing though.
I am a huge Beavis and Butthead fan, too- so yeah, that is pretty funny...I am liking the fact that I will have summers off again, but that can't be the reason you want to be a teacher...as for subbing, it can be VERY draining, so just pace yourself. Yeah, there are some schools of journalism in France but they are really costly and sometimes bad so you have to make the right choice and invest yourself a lot without a lot of chances of success. The fact is I'm not really sure yet what I want to do after college so I'm still waiting to see if I fall in love with law jobs but so far it hasn't happened. :P

I am an obstetrician-gynecologist in a private hospital in the Philippines. Once volunteered as OB-GYN consultant for 2 years in a government-owned hospital attending to poor patients who needed charity-driven doctors. Had to quit the job because of too much politics in the hospital. I'm currently teaching in a university on top of my private practice.

What is "too" early to expose a child to lifting weights? My oldest son is 11 yrs old, about 5'10" and 150 pounds and showing no signs of stopping height-wise. I myself normally run 2 or so miles every other day, and he likes to go along with me for the run.
I also do light lifting of weights..my son also wants to do this. He is into sports (has played football, basketball and soccer), and so far I have told him no to the weight room, but have allowed him to run with me.
He insists on lifting with me, though. My take is that he needs to wait until at least his mid-teens for the weights and just continue to run/walk with me every other day.
Any thoughts?

I'd like to add to this discussion, however, that weight-lifting is often used in younger ages and quite often with the elderly, as it is one of the fastest and most effective ways to build bone mass, (which is very helpful at pre-adult stages of bone disease and similar conditions that affect soft-tissue). So while weight-lifting is not very effective for building muscle mass prior to adulthood, it is often used with teens and sometimes pre-teens for other reasons. Building bone mass is also in direct relationship to how much muscle can be supported, so it can have beneficial effects for body-building later on.

After one and a half year there are slight changes in my working life
I LOVE changes and nwe challenge and I am the kind of person who really got bored after being doing much time doing the same stuff so my actual analysis is

I still consider myself a project manager but this adventure is over, so I am searching for the next one. I love the adventure of watching a project growth
Meanwhile
2) Legal representative for a family appraisal business
I am part time in this now, almost full time, I am specializing myself with a master degree in appraising and now I am specializing the company in Machinery and Business appraising ( I am somehow a Finance Master so It complements)
3) Civil engineer who happend to construct a couple of homes a year with a partner as a side businees
I am still doing this , one new house for this year, so if youre planning on moving to a tropical country we have wonderfull states starting at 300k ;D

Have also been a social worker, CPA, CFO, de facto CIO, COO, and day trader over my career. Currently at home after recently finishing a 10 month engagement thinking about writing a book, renewing my CPA license, going back into consulting, or getting involved with some not-for-profit.
I have had ring-side seats at most of the major financial meltdowns in this country going back to Penn Square, Bank of New England, the New England banking and commercial real estate crisis in the 90s, the dotcom and mortgage fiascoes, and more recently worked with Fannie Mae and GM just before they got bailed out. Reminds me of a scene from The Wonder Years ... Kevin Arnold's dad is Manager of Distribution and Product Support Services at a company called NORCOM, and Kevin asks him (innocently) if he always wanted to be a Manager of Distribution and Product Support Services, (which his dad gets a chuckle from).
The episode started with the kids saying what they wanted to be when they grew up, and their "fall-back" options. Funny how our lives progress, and how our goals continually change with age. At the youngest I can remember, I wanted to be a Minister, and my "fall-back" was an Astronomer, (which is what I'd still like to be - the Astronomer, that is). ;)

Nice to meet you ... I lived in the Philippines for about a year, primarily in the Santa Cruz area of Manila, but also into Painique, (where her family is from), Quezon, Cebu, (of course), and my favorite place, Boracay, (to vacation).
Adobo is very good, but my favorites are Singang na Baboy, Pandesal, Ensaymada, Shrimp Pinakbet, Longganisa, Lechon Manok, (yum!), Babingka, Halo-Halo, (extra-yum!), and street food like Lumpia, Kamote-Cue, Taho, and Kwek-Kwek.
I have to say, I was very reluctant to eat many things there, but I promised Rose that I would try anything at least once. Her mother's specialty was Fried Palaka, and it was delicious!, (I never told my Mom, though, cuz that's her favorite animal) ... however, I did not like the Tamilok in Cebu, and I could only eat Balut once, (though Rose at it almost every night, haha).
I will never forget the sound of the "Balut Man" at 11PM or later out on the street ... one of the sounds of the Philippines that I grew quite fond of ... "Baluuuuuut! Baaaaluuuut!" ... great memories there, and I love the people. Filipina women are easily the most beautiful in the world, IMHO, and I have always felt that way. :)

I had to look-up what Tamilok was ... they are long mangrove-boring mollusks that look like worms. I am amazed that you were so brave as to try them! :o
I've never tried Kwek-Kwek .. so I guess they were not available during my days at the University of the Philippines (where it supposedly originated.)
I used to eat balut frequently but after spending 25+ years here in the U.S. with minimal exposure to balut, I can no longer eat the sisiw. Eeeewww!

i make a living, defined as making money to bills i assume, by serving (and i do mean serving) as director at an international program for professionals. and i also teach.
the program is located somewhere between california and new york and in the [dang]ed basement of our building.
but perhaps a better question is how we live the lives we pay for by working. :)

As for WEEI, I'm in my 2nd month there as a video production specialist. The video department here is very small, but we're responsible for putting up a whole lot of content every week. My responsibilities include posting clips of the Dennis & Callahan show everyday, writing/creating original videos, filming pre-roll advertisements with the radio talent, filming press conferences and player interviews and editing them together, etc. For example, I was at the Celtics Rookie press conference a couple of weeks back and filmed/edited this short video:

All in all, I'm really enjoying the job so far as it engages two of my greatest life passions (video and sports.)

Got a BS hoping to be a cop, but ended up in the security field (veteran preference made it pretty tough). I took to it though and worked my way into management/recruiting. After getting laid off, I'm back working for the family business and on the verge of hopefully joining a local college's police department (fingers crossed after 2nd interview).

My certification (and all of my experience) is at the Elementary level but my resume got passed on the HS and they hired me for an Ed Assistant job. Not exactly what I'd envisioned, but it's a good path for me to follow that will open up a lot more opportunities. I can extend my Special Needs certification to K-12 with my prior credentials by putting in 150 hours (which I'll do).
The only significant jobs I've ever had in the 20 years since I graduated with my Bachelors have been either free lance/contract stuff or a sole proprietor/owner of a business. Very different becoming part of a decent sized bureaucracy.
Healthy bennies are great!

I own a business at my local international airport.
It's a Donut store with about 16-20 staff.
There are over 6 million passengers through the airport each year (just passengers), and there are only 6 places out of 22 shops that do coffee and food, so it keeps me pretty busy.
I have excellent staff though which make the job way better and my mother actually helps with a lot of accounting stuff which she loves- and saves me thousands of dollars. thanks ma :)
I won some money playing poker years ago and bought this store have had it for 2 years. The plan is to put it on the market at some point over the next year and see if my competition wants to buy the store. (one company owns 16 of the 22 stores and 4 of the 6 food places at the airport). If not I'll just hold onto it and hopefully it doesn't go bust :)
It's not my job, but if I do sell the shop, I want to get into housing/renovating and become a really rich, annoying landlord of multiple properties and retire by the time I'm 50.
I'm Australian and want to be able to go watch the playoffs every year for 3 months over the US summer.
(I went to school at Indiana University and go to the USA frequently).

I'm 13 months into a 2 year Masters program for K-8 Moderate Special Needs. I recently closed up shop for a record store biz that I ran for 14 years. I've been substitute teaching, and looking for work as an aide.
Loving what I'm doing though.
Cognitive or Achievement? I've spent more hours administering that this year than I could possibly count :)

Hey All!
During my time here at Celticsblog, I've noticed that many bloggers come from vastly different backgrounds. I've seen everything from entertainers to laborers to academics posting on here, and it's really interesting that something like a sports team can gather together so many differing walks of life, ideologies, and lifestyles under a common interest.
That being said, I thought it'd be pretty interesting to create a thread where we each name and discuss our career/occupation to see just how far Celtics basketball can penetrate these differing walks of life.
I'll start. Right now I'm a doctoral student in healthcare ethics at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I also work at Duquesne's Center for Healthcare Ethics as a Graduate Research Assistant where I'm currently doing research/grant-writing in the area of the Indian healthcare perspective in a Western context. Upon finishing my doctorate, I will probably find work as a clinical ethicist in a hospital or a professor in a bioethics, philosophy, or theology department at a university, though I'd gladly take a high-paying corporate ethicist or hospital management position, too. ;D
On a side note, my (current) dream job is to be able to support myself by writing, both fiction and non-fiction. I have no particular area that I want to stick to, because I've wrote small pieces on everything from political commentary to philosophy/bioethics to fantasy. I'm currently working on my own fantasy novel, with underlying philosophical themes, that I hope to get published within the next year or so.
How about you? What do you do for a living? If you would prefer to do something else, what would you choose to do?

I teach in a High School Support Unit - teaching kids with autism and learning difficulties. Previously taught in a Juvenile Justice Centre (boys aged 10 to 16 either on remand or with custodial sentences). Before that 23 years teaching in a comprehensive High School. All here in Sydney - Australia.

I almost started a new thread regarding careers before I recalled we had this one. I have been thinking lately that there seem to be a lot of lawyers on the forum, and that seems to make sense given the frequent debates and emphasis on logical reasoning.

With the engineering background, I certianly favor logical reasoning and linear thinking. Some of the debates on here are definitely grounded in insight and facts. Others devolve into snarkfests and rampant conclusion jumping.

I play poker for a living. I play what are called 'cash games', which are different from the tournaments you'd see on TV. So I play poker online (and sometimes in Casinos depending where I am, but I hate casino poker- way too slow, although the players are terrible and easier to beat). I mainly play Texas Hold Em but will also play a game called Omaha if there's a big fish in the game.
From playing poker (getting lucky in a few tournaments basically) I also have a Donut store at an airport which I've had for 7 years.
My wife is from the USA (New England) so we travel back and forth a bit to see her family. Just got back from 6 weeks in Hopkinton, MA and Cape Cod actually. We try to coincide our visits to when the playoffs are on obviously :)

Do you have a set-up (e.g., numerous monitors, lazy Susan, etc)? I double-monitored but generally didn't play more than 3-4 tables at a time. Also, the competition was becoming very stiff, especially after some sites were shut down (seemingly in tandem with third-party banking sites being frozen by the gov't). Has the competition gotten even stiffer? And any headway in moving towards legalization & taxation in the US?

Awesome! I used to play on Pokerstars and some other websites all of the time, but it started getting a bit too expensive lol During high school and my undergraduate career, my friends and I would have poker nights every weekend. It usually devolved into drinking quarter games by the end of the night, but we had several hours of Texas hold 'em and Omaha before that. Personally, I prefer Omaha.

Figured as much. Never got into the brick-and-mortar, though. Foxwoods was pretty far and 200+ hands/hour > 15 hands/hour.

Yep. You have to have the time and patience to play at the Casino. My average session there is probably 11 hours.
