He had the ball in his hands, sure. Everyone on Kentucky did. But they were abysmal to watch from a team ball standpoint. No one was a shot creator, the ball movement. It was my turn, my turn basketball, and fire away from 3 if Randle couldn't overpower on the inside.

I look forward to seeing what he does in the pros.
I think part of that problem was the harrison twins, they tend to pass to each other if they even pass.

some mocks had him projected 25-30.  Everyone seemed to think he was a steal, though.

He's 18.  We'll see what he looks like in 4 years.

just a quick tidbit.. Young was ranked higher in a better HS draft class than Smart in his class the year before ... I know it doesnt necessarily mean much now but in lines of potential its a good piece to look at..

Definitely. The other problem was that almost all of them were freshmen who were used to being the man, and they could always fall back on out talent-ing their opponents.

I hope Rondo stays. The Celtics have a lot of team oriented guys, and with the passing ability of Rondo, Smart, Sullinger, Olynyk, and Wallace we have the makings of a fun offense.

Young needs a good environment to shine in. This could be the place for him.

some have compared Young to James Harden.  Like Harden he is not a high flyer and at times has/will have problems finishing around the net  (though with experience and adding strength will get better).  Just like Harden Young is a lefty, excellent shooter, utilizes floaters and is a fiery competitor.  Two bad things they share in common is being too left hand dominant and also at times can get trigger happy(which is a bad thing but also can be a good thing)

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
I'm 50/50 with the pick.
I just keep seeing a left handed poor man's Jeff Green.
Not many guys left to be hopeful for but Harris was there- I get that Danny already has loads of small guards already- but Harris is a better player and potential trade chip in my opinion.
I guess at worst he'll be a good spot up three point specialist, and defenders have to respect his shot so much that he'll be able to exploit off the dribble and get to the hole.

Seems to me like one of those classic Danny Ainge 'We can make this guy a valuable asset by 2015-16 for a trade', but he's so young that his ceiling is much higher than just that.

Is he a shooting guard or a small forward?

I guess when you consider how young he is at 18 years old, there's a TONNE of potential there.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I'm actually more excited about him than Smart. It seems he has that "upside" everyone likes and potential to be a go to scorer some day. Good gamble at 17 IMO.

Here's why he'll be good:  Rondo dishing him the rock for great looks.  Young covered?  Dish it to a cutting or posting up Smart.  He beasts it in for 2 or a foul.  I like!

Young vs Harris matchup i'm sure was watched. Young did a very good job on him on both ends and is younger.  His length caused Harris problems at times

Young has elite length for a SG and excellent length for a SF. He could still be growing

18 yrs old.
Already has an NBA body.
Can play the 2 & 3.
His size allows him to defend the 2 & 3 well.
Scores the basketball.
Knockdown shooter.

What's so bad about him ?
He's a left handed version of Afflalo & only 18 yrs old.  Definitely the best player available at 17, & his upside is through the roof. Hidden monster on that loaded Kentucky team. A truly great pick by Ainge.

  • Celtic's only raise championship Banners
Brad Stevens may be able to mold this kid in to a stud. he has a 7 foot wingspan which is great for steals, but he lacks defensive capabilities. He is only 18 so he will get stronger and faster. Also Brad Stevens I think we all can agree is a great coach for grooming players, like Hayward. If he can groom James Young, young could be a great 2 way player.

Good god...as someone who doesn't watch college hoops...

I tried to watch Young play vs. Michigan but the Kentucky offense was unbearable.

This was something I did not expect.

They literally had possessions where they had 3 guys take turns driving straight into the teeth Michigan "zone", trying to collapse the defense that way and the handing it off to the next guy.

Night and day from when I watched UCLA for Kyle Anderson.

Okay, but Young doesn't have much of handle and isn't close to the passer that Harden is, imo.  At least, not yet.  Give him time.  The guy hasn't even been a Celtic for 24 hours lol.
