Title: Paul Pierce retirement ceremony thread
Post by: JBcat on February 10, 2018, 09:41:30 AM
I thought it would be a neat idea to have a thread solely dedicated to Paul Pierce for this weekend.  It can be anything Paul Pierce related, posting your favorite moments, videos, favorite stories, talking about his stats, and debates Paul Pierce related.

If you happen to be at the game tomorrow please post your pictures/videos here. Haha

I’ll start.  Maybe the biggest blessing in disguise is his injury the year prior to the championship.  Maybe if he doesn’t get injured we don’t get as good a draft pick, then aren’t able to pull off both the KG/Ray trades and then maybe Paul gets traded himself.

Well, as long as my flight can get me out of Chicago tonight, I'll be there tomorrow.  Never seen a Celtic number retired live.  Going with my dad which will make it extra special.  Been marking this on the calendar for about 15 years so when it started to become apparent #34 was gonna be hanging up there one day.

Really looking forward to it.   I remember Bird but consider Pierce to be my generational Celtic.  Got drafted when I was in high school, was a Celtic throughout my 20s & into my 30s.  I grew as he grew.

'02 & '08 are especially meaningful.    Absolutely loved the way he played the game and how he energized the crowd.

TP.  I hope you have a great time.  Paul has the same place in Celtic fandom for me.

So after all the commotion of IT's tribute on Paul Pierce night, it turns out IT won't even be on the Cavs anymore  ;D

Many people say Pierce wasn't athletic.  Let's put that nonsense to rest.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHj3nkU077I

The dunk on the Raptors at 4:52 is one of my favorite all-time dunks.

I'm glad I don't live in Boston anymore especially with the horrific winters over the past few years, but I wish I was there to attend the game tomorrow.  Pierce is the reason I'm a die hard Celtic fan - growing up in Hawaii, we don't have professional sports and most people there like west coast teams (esp the Lakers).  I've always liked high-skill, high BBIQ players that beat you with craftiness more than players that dominate with raw athleticism, and to me Pierce was the best.

The Truth can ball against the best any time, anywhere, against any generation of NBA players.
 Period.

Who cares if he wasn't athletic... He was an elite Celtics' player, future Hall of famer, that's what only matters.

I'm going to be there tonight and I'm trying to plan my train ride to and from the TD Garden. Does anyone know the schedule of events pre and post game?

It is, but I don't see it in the TV listings.  Is it televised on NBC-Sports Boston?

It would have been nice if we had PP sit actually courtside, not behind the basket in the cheer sector.

Welp, at least we don’t have to worry about any team highlights overshadowing PP34 video on the Jumbotron.

We could use some Prime Captain right now.

Anyone just see Pierce walk right by Danny Ainge to hug Max? Not sure if there's any bad blood there b/c of the trade. I'm prob reading into something that doesn't exist.

Good ceremony- like Pierce's jacket.

I did see him hug Danny.

Also, if anyone has the link to the entire ceremony I'd appreciate it. Down here in Florida after 30 minutes we got blacked out even though I have the NBA package. Then I went to NBA TV where they showed parts of it amongst discussion and commercials and then a preview to the Rockets game. We had to go to my computer to watch the rest on NBA.com. Thanks in advance.

It was a really good tribute.  I loved all the speeches.  Paul, classy as ever, thanked all the right people from Mom, to coaches to teammates, family, ownership, his old workout buddy from Inglewood.  Great job.

Good ceremony- like Pierce's jacket.

He gave Danny a big hug and spent about 5 min thanking Danny for sticking with him back during the bad old days, so no I don't think there's anything there. Danny joked that Paul could replace him one day.

Very nice ceremony.  I definitely teared up just a tad when Paul raised his number.

The only awkward moment was when Ainge made some shameless reference to (I think it was Mike Zarren) being Boston's new most eligible bachelor.  I'm not sure what that was all about.

Off-topic a bit, Antoine really has put on some serious weight.  I'm really glad Pierce had him there, though.

I honestly mistook Antoine for Shaq at first. I couldn't believe it.

I dont get how Rip Hamilton gets to have a party for almost an hour at half time of a game to raise his number, Kobe Bryant gets half-time, and Paul Pierce has to to go to after the game?

I'm a bit disappointed that Lebron didn't participate in the ceremony after the game. I mean, he was there, it wouldn't have taken much. Magic participated in Bird's ceremony. It would have been a classy act.

And the fact that Tommy didn't show up is a pretty bad sign for his current health. Best wishes to Tommy.

I don't know how well that would have gone over, especially right after he whooped our butts.

Magic and Bird had a special relationship that very few rivals have ever shared.  That was an extremely unique situation.

Doc's speech was great, especially the line that it's rare to have a great player that allows himself to be coached, that is how you reach greatness. He's absolutely right.

I also saw Toine on the SEC Network the other day and absolutely could not recognize him. It was National Signing Day for football recruits and I mistook him for a retired offensive lineman. No lie

Where was ray Allen during the ceremony?

Playing some golf

He should have went. Didn't pierce say he squashed the beef with ray in China or something? Maybe ray didn't with rondo or kg. Should have still have regardless if he was invited

He could have at least tweeted congrats to Pierce instead of congratulating some random dude for his golf game. That's why you manage to get uninvited from stuff Ray!

little surprised there was no involvement from Larry Bird. Even magic and Kobe were in the video piece, couldn't get a quick congratulatory quote from Larry? To me and I think most people it was Larry then no one for awhile, then Pierce.
otherwise it was cool of course :)

Does anyone know if Lebron stayed after the game and watched PP tribute? Just curious, would have been cool if he did, or even said a few words as a competitor.
