Title: Euroleague 2017-18
Post by: greece66 on September 09, 2017, 01:36:44 PM
This is a bit early, as Euroleague starts on October 12.

For now, I put here some links:

Euroleague's official site

http://www.euroleague.net/

Sportando (good for news outside the NBA)

http://www.sportando.com/en/

A sub on the Euroleague in reddit (very low activity but quite consistent on its posting)

All the roster moves of Euroleague teams since last year

http://www.euroleague.net/news/i/7vnlpnpkn566f5tk/2017-18-roster-moves

Only two players continue in Maccabi since last season. Similarly, only four players continue in Anadolu and Baskonia.

Notice the coach changes too: only nine out of 16 coaches continue in their teams. This is a league with very fluid rosters.

Finally, CSKA replaced Teodosic with Sergio Rodriguez (played in Philly last year): as good a replacement as they could possibly find.

I'll be making short presentations for teams. If ppl want to write stuff on a team they know/like, feel free to jump in.

I start with Panathinaikos. We rather unexpectedly won the Greek championship last year, by beating Olympiakos at his home in game 5- Panathinaikos had not done this since 1999, as the home court advantage is hard to break in Greece.

Panathinaikos got two players this offseason iirc: Antetokounmpo's older brother (Thanassis) - to me he seems unpolished offensively, but his athleticism is a plus in Europe, esp. when it comes to D- and Matt Lojeski, an American-Belgian spot-up shooter who used to play for Olympiakos. If you could put these two together and make a player with Lojeski's shot and Thanassis' D, it would be great. Just sayin  ::)

Other notable players are Calathes and Pappas - both played in the Eurobasket.

Looking at the roster above, I am not sure why Charampopoulos is not included- he got an injury but should be back before Christmas.

The coach is Xavi Pascual, I think he is a significant upgrade over the previous one (Pedoulakis) and I'm happy they kept him for this year too. Maybe Darío can add here.

Here is Panathinaikos schedule for this year´s Euroleague

https://basketball.realgm.com/international/league/8/Greek-HEBA-A1/team/9/Panathinaikos/schedule

And this the 1940 basketball team - apparently the Athens YMCA was among their main rivals.

Edit: I just saw Panathinaikos lend Charalambo to PAOK. I wish they had done it earlier - he needs mins to improve.

Last 10 days were hectic but now I'm back to presenting Eurobasket teams. Ideally I'll write something on  Real and Maccabi And if time allows, expand a bit more.

So, today... CSKA.

Their star player, Milos Teodosic, is gone to the Clippers, but CSKA still has a strong roster. The highlight of the summer was getting Sergio Rodriguez to replace Teodosic. CSKA remains one of the strongest Euroleague teams.

They have been at the top for more than 50 years. They have lost the Russian title only twice since 1992 (in 2001 and 2002), for a total of 24 Russian championships in 27 seasons. They were dominant in the Soviet era as well winning a total of 24 titles.

Among the few teams that broke the CSKA monopoly was Zalgiris Kaunas winning three titles in the 80s (1985-87), when they had Sabonis in their roster.

CSKA have also won a total of 7 Euroleague/Champions cup titles; only Real Madrid has more with 9.

Much of this success is owed to coach Alexander Gomelsky. He was their head coach from 1966 to 1988 - unfortunately, I do not know anything about his coaching style nor could I find any info; this despite him being a HoFer and having written several books on bball.

^Here with CSKA players. Nr 11 is Vladimir Tkachenko (7'3).

Finally, if you are into this kind of thing, he was a consultant at a Soviet movie about a bball player. The movie is online (but no subs) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9L_bultN6cc

Haven't been super impressed by PAO's start to the season.

I still cannot fathom that their official name is Panathinaikos Superfoods. I hate Dimitris Giannakopoulos so much.

I watched a bit of the Panathinaikos - Real Madrid game

Madrid had a higher % in all three cats, but also made a lot more TOs. Close game was open until the last second. Doncic was OK, Calathes seems to play better this year for Panathinaikos.

The replay has been uploaded here (also check out the journalist at the postgame interviews  :-X )

Khimki's Thomas Robinson (#5 of the 2012 draft) out with a broken wrist.

Similarly, Olympiacos's Mantzaris out with an unspecified (but prolly not too serious) injury on the left leg.

I dont have the time to follow the Euroleague this year, let alone writing on it. If anyone does and wants to help out, by all means do it guys.

For now, I'm posting an excerpt of an Obradovic interview, where he discusses the successes of SAS and Pop.

Anyway, Doncic's Madrid made it all the way to the finals, the game vs Zalgiris Kaunas is tomorrow May 20 at 20.00 CEST.

After bertomeu decided to use all his strength all season to make panathinaikos lose... one of his darlings his home real or the team where their sponsor comes from fener will win the title.. what a joke organisation... poor refereeing poor schedule in constant war against fiba, national teams... Europe teams using 6 7 Americans without trying to find local talent.... look at how many Turks fener  has.. they will destroy Euro basketball soon enough... and the truth is that even the nba needs God Euro players... greece Spain Italy even Serbia Croatia and Russia have declined

I (and iirc Ederson too) like Charalambopoulos but he is more of a second rounder than a late first.

konkmv makes a good point above, you won't find much european talent in the top euroleague teams. Many euros that were drafted in the last few years come from teams outside the Euroleague (Giannis, yabu, ntilikina, zubac) came from teams outside the top or spent little time with them (zizic)

What I mean by this is that it is very hard to know what is going on because you have to follow dozens of national leagues. But again Charalambo is a talented, high IQ player who could flourish with the right coach (wink, wink).

This is the colour of someone who will lose his sleep if he loses any game, let alone the euroleague finals lol

I mean Zeliko can't bear losing and it looks like it might happen tonight

Charalambopoulos was injured most season.. there are some talents like him lountzis and kalaitzakis in greece but... they have not played enough.. obviously you can find a donsic jokic adetokunmpo once in a while but the production has regressed... when Croatia had petrovic kukoc radja and vrankovic at the same time and recently Spain had gasol bro and co you cannot make a comparison

Nick calathes thanasis adetokunmpo should be great role players if someone improves their shot

I respectfully disagree. European talent is on the rise. Radja? He was great for Panathinaikos not so much for the NBA. Even more so in the case of Vrankovic. (sorry androslav lol)

You now have many Europeans getting drafted every year and some turn out to be seriously good (Giannis, Jokic, Gobert, Saric, Schroeder).

I love and admire Galis but he learned bball growing up in the States. I would not count him as a European talent.

Yes, Petrovic, Sabonis, Kukoc were great, but Giannis alone has the chance to be better than any of them. And apart from quality, there is something to be said about quantity too, a lot more euros play now in the NBA than in the 90s. This sure helps a lot.

@hwangjini_1

About Doncic there is a valid concern IMO in that Real Madrid is a better run organization than Phoenix or Sacramento. And he has a great situation there, winning it all at such a young age and being the fans favourite. Also, Madrid is a great place to live.

But I think the rumours are wrong, the sensible thing is to move to the NBA once you can, get that fat salary and play against the best competition in the world. He seems very independently minded which is also great, some times Europeans delay coming over bcs their parents (usually the father) exercise pressure. Vezhenkov was such a case.

Regarding Isaac Bonga, I ll ask ppl who follow the Bundesliga and get back to you.

Quote
I've seen him play against Bayern in the playoffs
He has quite some hype especially in Germany
He really throws himself into it
I love players with that amount of game knowledge who just see when someone runs free
His throw isn't all that great right now, but nothing he can't work on
I don't think he'll fair that well in the NBA right now simply because he doesn't has the mass
 He's like 80 kg
He should just stay in the Bundesliga for another year or two and hit the books there
The Bundesliga isn't all that bad, they also have a lot of professionals from all over the world
His contract with the skyliners last till 2020 I believe
He's pretty explosive
Low trajectory when he throws
 Fun to watch
His brother is a machine as well

^what the Bundesliga savant had to say

I don't know will he be available by the time we draft, but Dženan Musa (Jenn-an Moose-aa) fits the bill. Bosnian kid that played for a Croatian champion Cedevita. He is young (got to 19 less than 2 weeks back), fairly athletic, has range, has length, some playmaking ability, he seems talented. I watched him 4 live games this year and even though he didn't dominate in any of them, there were flashes. Definitely enough for a late 1st rounder. If by some chance, now ranked (18-20) he ends up being available.

I had promised a road trip to the wife and i missed sthe F4 so other than being excited for the 10th cup i have no idea what happened in Belgrade :D

Charalampopoulos is almost a legend if you look at his FIBA Junior tournament achievements. By far the best player. Good range, excellent passer, very good rebounder and true leader
Unfortunately he didn't get to play with Panathinaikos. Last season he had a important role playing for paok but i think this ship has sailed. His averate athletic abilties (and i am generous here) don't help either
