Three sequels, and a spiritual successor:

Doctor Sleep.  How somebody views this movie will probably depend upon whether they've read the book, versus their feelings about the Shining movie.  If folks are expecting a lot of the Overlook Hotel (destroyed in Stephen King's original, and thus not in the book at all), they might be disappointed.  It really only plays a role in the last part of the movie.  But, if you were a fan of the book, I think you'll be really pleased with the adaption.  I liked it quite a bit better than the book, and I liked the added Overlook scenes.  The only issue I had is that there's a scene where we see the extended torture of a child.  I thought this was gratuitous and unnecesssary; I just don't find this stuff entertaining.

Terminator.  I've got mixed feelings on this one.  I really didn't like how Linda Hamilton portrayed her character, and Arnold was largely useless, too.  And, as a fan, I didn't necessarily care for the direction they took the franchise with the death of a key character.  But, for the story they decided to tell, I thought it was otherwise well done.  The new actors were all really solid, and the CGI was mostly amazing (with only one poorly done part that was near the beginning of the film).

Frozen II.   I didn't care for it.  The plot was fairly thin, none of the songs were memorable, and there were way too many references to death for young kids in my opinion.  The quality was that of a forced sequel / straight to video movie, outside of the animation, which was fantastic.  I wasn't a big fan of the over-the-top politics, but I could have easily looked past that if this was a good movie.  It wasn't.

The Irishman.  I really enjoyed the first part of the movie, but once we get to the Hoffa storyline (the main part of the plot) I didn't love it.  It just felt a little "been there, done that" to me, and I wasn't emotionally invested in the story.  Hoffa wasn't a hero or a villain, and everyone knows his death is coming, so it just didn't resonate that much with me.  I thought the storyline with the daughter was interesting, but that was a bit downplayed.

I think the last Terminator movie I thoroughly enjoyed was Terminator Salvation.

I have ZERO idea as to why Rotten Tomatoes bombed it. They have no clue.

I thought it was entertaining, but my wife hated it. I was looking forward to the planned sequels.

Saw "Dark Waters" on Saturday night.  Thought it was really good.   Holds some similarity to Flint but one I didn't know about involving DuPont and a West Virginia community.  Definitely cringe-worthy at times.  The film pulls no punches on the health symptoms or the lengths corporations will go in the name of greed.

The one thing I did like however about the Hoffa storyline (and maybe Scorsese did this by design) was how it seemed like DeNiro's character was almost torn between his loyalty for Joe Pesci's character and Hoffa.

I thought the Irishman was a great movie. I'm a huge Robert DeNiro fan and love his movies (Goodfellas, Heat, Casino, Midnight Run, etc.)

I also thought he was great in Joker.

All these Remakes they've done over the years and no Flash Gordon.

They NEED one. Would love to see some cameos from the original cast as well.

Not certain in this SJW era an antagonist like Ming the Merciless would make it to the big screen

Come on, the heroes have to "tear down a wall" that's oppressing indigenous people, but civilization is spared from the resulting flood because they're protected by ICE. It's got something for everyone!

...I also thought it sucked haha. Every song was either "here's some plot info you'll need later" or "let me state my current motivations a bunch of times in a row" And the fire spirit attack scared the hell out of my kid.

I saw some recent home releases - Ready or Not was a really fun horror movie with just enough comedy sprinkled in, the main actress does a great job in particular. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was also a good time - I didn't know Tarantino was doing the Inglorious Basterds alternate history thing again, and I'm very familiar with the Manson stuff, so the entire buildup was very ominous until the unexpected catharsis of the ending. It was super long but didn't feel that way, though I had to watch it in chunks.

To be very honest with you, all of that went way above my head. I wasn't thinking politics when I saw the movie so I didn't even think about any of that. I guess if you think about it, it makes sense but then again, I see those types of movies, especially sequels, more as entertainment instead of some lesson.

I thought the movie was okay. Not as good as the original and definitely a lot more complex in story line but there were some good action and funny scenes to keep me entertained. Then again, I saw it through my wife's work event that rented out the screening so since it was free, I was less critical than if I had to spend money for it.

I was just being tongue in cheek, I'm not really sure what politics Roy is referring to - I guess the exploitation of the northern tribe by the wealthy monarchists? I did think it was funny in the moment when I realized the "solution" was essentially engineering a terrorist attack on a major piece of infrastructure, which is...not a typical kids' movie trope.

After years of "forgetting" about it and people around me telling me to watch it, I finally saw Seven Samurai.

Boy, am I glad that I finally did.

Ford vs. Ferrari was excellent. As someone who cares nothing about cars and had very low expectations going in (my family chose to see it on Thanksgiving), it may have been the best film I've seen this year. Bale was excellent, and so was Damon.

Parasite is simply a masterpiece. Another contender for best movie I've seen all year, IMO.

I actually liked Last Christmas. Saw it with the GF, who hated it. Friends panned it as well. But as Xmas movies go I thought it was pretty creative. (That being said, my mom would always play the cheesiest Hallmark Christmas movies on the TV in our kitchen, so I have an incredibly low bar when it comes to Christmas movie quality.)

Agree with GetLucky .... i enjoyed Ford vs Ferrari very much

Can't say the same about Uncut Gems. Adam Sandler was actually good though.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I just watched Detective Pikachu and MIB International.

I rate them both solidly as 'fun but forgetful'. The empty calories of movies. They weren't bad. They just weren't so good that I'll be thinking about them in a month.

But pass a coin to your witcher o valley of plenty all day all day.
