I haven't been to the Garden in years, and the last time I was nearby it was pretty obvious that the whole area had changed dramatically since the "days of yore," when I used to live near the city.  The point being, I no longer have any applicable knowledge of what-all is in the general vicinity of the Garden.

I'll be going there with my 10 year-old son to see the Star Wars orchestral extravaganza next month, and I'd like to take him to a nearby restaurant for some lunch beforehand, (we're attending the matinee).  Does anybody have any restaurant recommendations for me?  A relatively casual atmosphere and close proximity to the Garden are priorities, as is avoiding chain-type eateries, (Fridays, The 99, etc.).  Also, I'd just assume avoid pubs.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance!

Go to the North End, if you can find a parking space. The places around the Garden are OK for a beer before the game, but that's about it.

For "near" the Garden:

1. Anthem
2. The Fours
3. Mulligan's
4. Grand Canal
5. Porter's

Best in Boston:

1. Legal Sea Foods
2. Cheesecake Factory
3. L'Espalier
4. Durgin-Park
5. Chowdas

(Completely personal preference ... I don't claim to be the utmost authority ;))

Johnnies looked pretty good, but it appears they're not open for lunch on Saturdays, unfortunately.

I think we'll probably end up at the Union Oyster House.  Still open to other suggestions, though....

Edit: Just saw your post, Bahku.  I'll check out those places too.  Thanks!

I always go to Prudential to eat I mean, it's not that far away, and most E line trains (if you take the Prudential line instead of the Copley line) go straight to North Station, so you don't have that Government Center train switch.

Prudential has Cheese Cake, Legal Seafoods and Haru, the best Japanese fusion restaurant in Boston

My pleasure! The ones I listed near the Garden are more pub-style/sports bar types, and you can often find Celtic Dancers doing pics and signings there before games, (and other special promo events) ... and it's nice to be a few steps away at game time. The ones I listed under my favorites in Boston, are Class "A" style restaurants, and much more expensive, obviously, (as well as not right down the street). But most are right off the "T" in one way or another, so you can still park at the Garden lots and hop on the train. Hey, did you know you have one of the highest TP-to-post ratios on CB? (Here's another!) ;)
