1973 Steve Downing 17
1974 Glenn McDonald 17
1975 Tom Boswell 17
1976 Norm Cook 16
1981 Charles Bradley 23
1982 Darren Tillis 23
1983 Greg Kite 21
1984 Michael Young* 24
1985 Sam Vincent 20
1987 Reggie Lewis 22
1988 Brian Shaw 24
1990 Dee Brown 19
1991 Rick Fox 24
1992 Jon Barry* 21
1993 Acie Earl 19
2001 Joseph Forte 21
2003 Troy Bell* 16 2003 Dahntay Jones* 20
2004 Al Jefferson 15 2004 Delonte West 24 2004 Tony Allen 25
2005 Gerald Green 18

Since 1968 the Celtics have picked 22 players in the first round after the 15th pick was made.  Looking at the list, who would you say are the top players drafted and who were the worst?

My opinion --
Best would be Reggie Lewis at 22 in 1987
Worst - John Barry at 21 in 1992

Biggest surprise on this list is the flipping of players picked from 2003 onwards, only Tony Allen remains (and that includes the picks the team had higher than 15 as well)

Best is Reggie Lewis - Big Al's not quite there yet.

Worst is Forte - Jon Barry at least stuck around the league for more than 2 years.  Honorable mention to Troy Bell, though that barely counts since we picked him for Memphis.

Best- Jefferson

Worst- Forte

Yeah, I think I agree.  It comes down to Big Al and Reggie for best pick; you can't go wrong with either one, in terms of talent relative to draft position.  As for worst pick, I'll agree with Forte, only because we had an identified need at point guard, and we passed up three legit players at that position (Tony Parker, Jamaal Tinsley, and Gilbert Arenas) in favor of him.

Phoenix drafted him and traded him to Boston.

Best: Al Jeff

Worst: Michael Smith over Tim Hardaway. Maybe I'm biased because I really liked Hardaway's game.

Edit: Wait,  lower than 15 means after 15 right? Ahh, forget it. I'm just confused.

The reason why I think Jon Barry was the worse pick was the incredibly bad public relations hit the Celtics took by his refusal to come to Boston.  Following on the heels of Lenny Bias and the Big 3 (real big 3) getting old and retiring, Jon Barry gave the finger to the Celts in front of the entire country.

That's kind of splitting hairs, but whatever. I'd stil go Big Al then Lewis, and on the other side Forte, then Green, then Earl.

Yeah, but who thought that at the time?  When we drafted Gerald, almost universally fans were heralding it as the "steal of the draft".  The kid has the hops and the jumper to be good, he just doesn't have the IQ or the work ethic.
