A soleus strain causes pain when activating the calf muscle or when applying pressure on the Achilles tendon approximately 4 cm above the insertion point on the heel bone or higher up in the calf muscle. Stretching the tendon and walking on tip-toe will also aggravate pain.

The Celtics have ruled Kristaps Porzingis - Right Soleus Strain - OUT for Game 5 vs. the Heat tomorrow.

Severity of the strain is the key here, but that’s the same part of the calf that Giannis injured. He’s trying to play tonight in what would be his first game back.

Worst case scenario he comes back for the ECF or finals

Best case is he returns at some point of the next round.

Same injury as Giannis and he hurt his 17 days ago. But the grade  of the strain is important.

The latest the 2nd round can begin is May 7 (Tuesday). So it's probably Game 1 Sunday, Game 2 Tuesday IF CLE/ORL finish in 6 games and BOS wins tomorrow, otherwise Game 1 Tuesday.

Maybe Boston purposely loses tomorrow to make sure it starts next Tuesday? (kidding)

FWIW, they never announced the Grade of Giannis' sprain but a handful rumored it to be Grade 2, which has a 3-6 week timeline. It's been 3 weeks since his injury.

IF Porzingis does have Grade 1, that means it could be 1 to 3 weeks MAX which could even mean he can return during the 2nd round (best case scenario). But I'd play it safe regardless.

I can't imagine they'd report this and say it on the injury report if there was actually an Achilles tear or something more serious. We may have dodged a bullet, KP should be back at some point UNLESS we somehow get bounced this series or next round.

I don't recall any reporting that indicated it was a grade two strain. The reporting was that the Bucks were prepared to be without him "to start the series" but were hoping he might be back before the end of the series. If it was a grade 2 strain that simply wouldn't work as a timetable.

Per Woj:

Celtics C Kristaps Porzingis is expected to miss a minimum of several games with the right soleus strain, sources tell ESPN.

IMO best case scenario is the ECF. Seems pretty certain KP misses round 2.

Going to need Al to hold the fort as well as the 4 guys off the bench now.

Feels like the conference finals is a best case scenario.  Unfortunate, but we went multiple stretches without KP this year and were overall fine.  The playoffs is different, but even without him we’re still better than anyone in the East, although the margin is of course smaller.

Nobody out there seems willing to put a grade on the strain. That would be nice to know, a grade 1 could still be anywhere from 1-3 and a grade 2 could be 3-6 but knowing its a grade 1 would rule out the worst-case scenarios.

That said it sounds like a case where he'll miss most if not all of the next round. Thats fine, C's should win without him. If they can't beat Clevland with what's left then they aren't the team we think they are.

This is why its good they added Tillman. Gives them another bigman piece to try.
