According to Steve Bulpett of Heavy.com, the Los Angeles Lakers "were offering a couple of second-round picks and some minimum contracts [for Schroeder]"
That's interesting to me. If true, couldn't we have done the following:
BOS receives: Theis, one #2
HOU receives: Freedom, Bruno, minimum contracts from LAL
LAL received: Schroeder
... or, maybe Houston prefers to save money and prefers the minimum deals, so we keep both #2s.
It's interesting that there was truly an offer - 2 2nds, too. It was widely assumed this was done as a salary dump move for HOU (3 years of Theis) and the contracts we sent them didn't matter. I came to the same conclusion as you after the trade went down. I assumed somebody was at least willing to send a 2nd and we could have done a 3-way deal and collected that 2nd.
It does appear that since the Rockets actually 'needed' Schroder's physical to go through that they might have an interest in keeping him. At the very least, it's a good opportunity for Schroder to pad his stats, but still a bit surprising that they may not buy him out. If they do, the Cs may have just run out of time since this was the last deal before the deadline. Missed opportunity, for sure, though, since we are little light on 2nds moving forward.
