It is my girlfriends Birthday today. I want to take her to a nice place and not Olive Garden nicer either. She wants something in some sort of high traffic area i.e Back Bay. I would prefer a French Restaurant I was also thinking Top of the Hub but I did not like the food when I went there. So help me out if you can this is a very important birthday.

Newdusk - I am a foodee, my gf and I are into going to nice restuarants so here is my take. Dont know how much coin you are willing to drop but if you really wanna knock her socks off I recomend L'Espalier . Know you are going to spend probs $275 on the dinner, but in my opinion this is the best rest in Beantown. Please do not go to Top of the Hub, it is a tourist trap and the food is gross. hope it works out for you.

L'Espalier - http://www.lespalier.com/menu/

Option 2 - Still French a little cheaper, looking at $200 for the night, phenomenal food.

Pigalle - http://pigalleboston.com/

Option 3 - French Bistro stlye in the South End, now you are looking at $125 - $150. Really rich and delicious food, cool looking atmosphere as well.

Gaslight - http://www.gaslight560.com/menus.html

Now you dont have to do French and still get great food. You can depend on the oldie but goodie Grill 23 - http://www.grill23.com/ , You can check out an Italian/Peruvian fusion restuarant in the North End, which is delicious in Taranta - http://www.tarantarist.com/v5/dinner.html , or my last recomendation would be Taberna de Haro in Brookline, delicious Spanish Tapas and a very romantic atmosphere - http://www.tabernaboston.com/menus_tapas.html

I second L'Espalier. If you really want to impress her, it's the way to go. Perfect location and the food is amazing. It'll be costly, but absolutely worth it.

there's an italian place on the South End, totally forget the name of it, but there's one on Newbury that's always a 2 hour wait, and this is the same place, same owners, menu, etc. and never crowded, great place to be romantic - anyone know what I'm talking about?

if all else fails, take her to Denny's, tell her she can get anything she wants on the menu except the Lobster, order a Grand Slam for yourself so you have plenty of jokes to make, I think you'll be in good shape

(good luck!)

I love the olive garden.

Go to the North End. Pick any restaurant. Can't go wrong.

Good list from newdusk.

I'd add Hammersley's Bistro (South End) to it. Also LaVoile on Newbury Street for more casual French food and atmosphere. If you want Italian, Rabia's on Salem Street in the North End is a personal favorite of mine.

Like I said bro, do't know your budget, but if this is the route you want to go I would say try Gaslight. Extremley romantic and in the South End, where you can walk to some after dinner drinks.

What's your budget? Les Zygomates is awesome for French food, and they've got a great wine list, good food, and live jazz. However, they're located in the Leather District, so it's a less glitzy area.

Letr me add that the best Italian Restaurant in the Boston area used to be Il Capriccio on Main Street in Waltham. Very tomantic and very expensive-- but some say it has gone downhill recently.  But the Tuscan Grille, right around the corner on Moody Street, hasn't gone downhill and is another favorite of mine.  But it's a noisly, bustling place, not romantic.

Wow, I am so out of the loop for where to eat in Boston!  Of course the last time I live in Boston I spent a lot of time at Souper Salad, and the A&H Deli on Beacon Street (cheeburga cheeburga!)...Late night Buzzy's Roast Beef and Charlie's Diner in Kenmore...mmmm .   And of course Sammy's Felaffel stand over by Longwood (open 24 hours...365 days a year...my bro and I had a Christmas Eve tradition of going there for a snack...not much for the Jewish guys to do on Christmas Eve ;))

Sorry, just reminiscing.  The last nice meal I had in Boston was a few years back when we took my mother in law out for the dinner by the State House...Some place named after a number.  Anyone know the name?  It was pretty trendy, but tasty.

was it literally across the street? I think its some number, like 19 or something weird - there's also a newish steakhouse over there called Mooo! I haven't been, but what an awesome name

Tremont 647 in the Backbay has great food.  I would describe it as modern comfort food.  Things like Lobster mac and cheese, and truffled fontina stuffed tater tots.

I also would highly recommend Artu and Giacomo's.  Both are in the North end, and Artu has another restaurant on Charles street, and there is another Giacomo's in the South end.  Both are kind of classic italian places.  Very romantic.
