Former Major Leaguer Alex Rodriguez and billionaire Marc Lore are finalizing a deal to purchase the Minnesota Timberwolves from majority owner Glen Taylor, sources tell ESPN. Taylor will continue full control of team for two years before Rodriguez and Lore take over in 2023.

Statement from ARod and Lore: “We look forward to entering this phase of the process with Glen Taylor. Our respect for him and the legacy he has built lays an amazing foundation for what is to come. We are excited by the prospect of getting to know the Timberwolves organization.

So.....they moving to Seattle?

Although, it does sound like they have a long term lease with Target Center according to Mannix.

I can't imagine that ARod wants to spend times during the winter in Minnesota watching his team. A move would seem to be in order at some point, especially given Minnesota has been bottom 3 or the worst in attendance for close to a decade. Moving to a city that would support the team better makes sense.

From what I've heard, wasn't one of the conditions for Glenn Taylor selling team was that the buyer promise to stay in Minnesota?

Per the Athletic article, they've just entered into an exclusive 30 day negotiating window to finalize a deal.  So the TWolves aren't sold yet.

I understand Arod made a few hundred million in his career but how in the world is he in conversations about buying a major professional sports team?

EDITED - Not too bright.  Don't do it again.

ARod and Jennifer Lopez, if they are still together, have a combined net worth of about $800 million and got together with a couple billionaires and tried to by the Mets.

I don't see ARod as a primary owner but a part of a group. Maybe he owns more of the Wolves than LeBron owns in the Red Sox, but he won't be calling most of the large dollar decisions with the team. At least, I don't think so. I don't see that happening.

ARod and JLo aren't married.  I doubt she'd be putting her money in this venture.  The money guy is Marc Lore with a $4B net worth.

It's a weird deal being negotiated.  They'd be minority owners for a couple years and then take over as majority owner in 2023.

Although I’d say there would be a stipulation in the sale contract that keeps the Timberwolves in Minnesota, I’d actually love them to move the team then when the NBA finally expands, KG could finally own the Timberwolves...something obviously that means a lot to him.
