Bibby just made that stupid comment to take away the attention of how much of a disparity there is between the Celtics and the Hawks.

There's a difference from a populace not actively rooting for a team and a populace not being fans of a team. There are a TON of Boston fans that have always been fans of the Celtics, but the mediocrity of the team the organization has put forward has alienated many of them.

To me, a bandwagon fan is someone who goes and root for the hot team in the league or just goes being a fan of a team for random reasons.  Boston fans are usually not like that.  They are Celtics fans, but they turned their backs to the NBA in general when the Celtics stop being competent.  To me, that doesn't make them bandwagon fans.

I can be an action movie fan, but if Hollywood keeps releasing crap action movies I'm not going to watch them.  It's a waste of time, and many people around Boston surely felt that way about the Celtics.

sorry budCelt, but what's the difference?

yes, bibby was foolish for saying this, but i agree with the OP that he was kind of right.

A real fan cheers for (publically) and attends games more than willingly, adamantly, even when the team stinks.  Other "fans" are by definition "fair weather".

Regardless, the net result is that ALL fans, fair weather or not, were completely venomous towards him tonight - and while Bibby showed flashes of transcending it early on, he eventually played another dud.

as sheed would say, "ball don't lie!"

BudCelt was right on. Reread his post and you will see the difference.

Spending money for a game should lead to enjoyment, not despair. If others couldn't bear to watch the Celtics last year, I can understand. If they wanted the owners to earn their income, that is fine. Just because I still bought tickets doesn't make me feel the need to declare myself a superior "real" fan.

Bibby's comment was idiotic and Pierce had the best answer. EVERY team has fair-weather fans. But the Celtics still sold out many games last year while losing. The Celtics also had attendance much better than their record.

I also feel that the 'fair-weather fans' are no worse than the self-righteous, judgmental die-hards who complain throughout the game with nonsense critiques of every play, every call, and every coaching decision. I welcome all fans, even the casual and the obnoxious, so long as they don't complain when I cheer rather loudly during the game.

sorry budCelt, but what's the difference?

The loyalty.  The ammount of active support is of no importance to me.

I'll use my dad as an example, he's been a Celtic fan since the 60's.  He stopped watching them about two years ago because he couldn't take the piece of crap the Celtics were putting forward. He stopped watching the NBA period.  This year he returned.  Does that make him any less fan than any of you hardcore that don't miss a game? People deal with things differently.  Some people can take watching the team lose day after day, me and my dad are not like that. We see our team lose and we are in bad mood for the whole day the day afterward. So what's the point, when the team was not going anywhere?  I think many around Boston, many who are watching the Celtics again are like that.

Many cities have fans that have no loyalty.  They might like their team, but if the team is losing, they might as well go root for another team and they'd be just as happy.  That to me is a significant different.  There's a difference between indifference and not supporting the mediocre team the organization is putting forward.

And for that matter, I would love to see the city that faced with the same conditions the Celtics have been over the last two years would've handled it better (the fans).  I doubt anyone could find one city, maybe LA and that's a big maybe.  So singling out the Celtics fans for this is quite ridiculous. We might as well say that basketball fans in general, regardless of their city, are "fair weather" fans and fickle.

I was listening to Bibby's interview and I can see why he was mad at the fans. It sounds like he was getting heckled and harassed at the Mall (Copley and/or Cambridgeside) and maybe that was why he was so venomous. I can understand that. Many of us would do worse if people harassed us during personal time.

Anyone see this gem from tonight's espn postgame:

"In the first two games of the series combined, Bibby is 4-for-17 from the field with two assists.

But he didn't back down afterward.

'The people I was talking about know who they are,' he said. 'If they took offense to it, they must be part of it. I guess they are all bandwagon jumpers.'"

Personally, I don't think he was right, at least based on my own obsession with the Celtics whether they are the worst or best team in the league.  But, come on...  you stunk it up again tonight, you drew even more ire out of one of the most passionate fanbases in sports, and you still try to insult them?  He's just lucky they probably won't make it back to Boston this series.

At least he sticks to his guns.  No one can deny that there are more people there than last year or the year before or the year before, but that doesn't make him any less of an idiot for calling them on it when he can't even back up his big mouth with half decent play.
We're the ones we've been waiting for.

Dino Radja rocked! How about that backcourt along with him our three point specialist Chris Corchiani and Kevin Gamble. Not to mention the formidable frontline of Acie Earl, Dino Radja and Rick Fox/Xavier McDaniel. I remember going to school telling everyone how great the Celtics were. They looked at me funny but that is what people remember me for everytime they see me. The Celtics.

Then he should not have said anything in the first place. He is asking for that kind of abuse when he makes comments like that.  Of course their are more fans then last year, name a team that does not gain more support when their team is playing well. If Hawks fans show up because the Hawks are in the playoffs will he say the same thing? What is Bibby's problem? It must be that he realizes he and his team have no chance and is lashing out. He needs to grow up.

“Kendrick Perkins had something to say about me, and I don’t know where he all of a sudden got this tough streak from,” said Bibby, one of just two Hawks with playoff experience before this year (Joe Johnson is the other). “But his stat line was worse than mine (actually Perk was 1-for-3). I might have had a game like that, but I haven’t really seen him do much in his career, so until he does something and shows me something, I really don’t think he should say something. I didn’t go at anybody on the team, and I still wouldn’t, but he came at me. Anybody else, I’d take a little thing, but him? ”

This is what he said about Perk in the Herald. What a jerk Bibby is. What exactly has Bibby done that makes him superior. When was Perkins taking a personal shot at him with his comments anyways? The only one taking a personal shot is Bibby. He might want to focus on his own game and not on anybody elses.

I'm so thankful that we didn't deal for this joker.  I remember a lot of people throwing his name out as someone who might make this team better.

It's funny that Bibby decided to go out Perkins, so what that Perk had something to say about Bibby making stupid comments... I'm sure every Celtic felt the same way, but because of experience or a desire to not start anything they kept their mouths shut. But to say that Perk has done nothing in his career and should shut his mouth is ridiculous. Perk does exactly what he is told to do, play a role. Rebound, block shots, and be the "enforcer" in the paint. He has always had that tough streak and always has played with it; even his first year out of high school. And Bibby needs to look at Perk and realize that he never went to college, his game is still being refined. This would be Perkins first year if he went to four years of college... come on Bibby you went to college for a while and played for one of the best coaches in DI in Lute Olsen... he needs to just shut his mouth and worry about his own game. Which is really bad, Rondo as a second year guard, who would also be a rookie if he played his senior year is making him look silly.
