Hey one of my top 5.  I thought he may get to me. Very underrated and in this without guys like Shaq, I think he will do very well.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

McGrady and Hill were both top 3's for me. So far great picks. Might have to make an impulse decision at #5.
I was all over the place with Grant Hill. Everywhere from top 3 to end of first early 2nd. Still struggling with where to place him.

You're committing to a certain team structure with him since he needs the ball in his hands to be successful and isn't the greatest shooter. Fit is more important with him IMO than with Vince or some of the other likely first rounders.

Yeah, that was what was causing me some problems. The fit with some of the PGs vs other PGs. Quite a few on-ball creators at PG.

Phew. Well, I guess I would have been way off in my selection had I kept the #1 overall pick. The Toronto Raptors select Penny Hardaway with their first selection likely from '95-'96.

There are bigs in this draft who can defend, there are bigs in this draft who can score. There are wings that can do some of each, and guards that can as well. None of them provide the versatility and talent of Penny. There are simply no other 6'7 steal-hungry, pass-first, scoring machines who can guard and play 1-3.

Penny was going to be a multi-time winner until he got hurt. He won in the Olympics. He led the team to the Conference Finals until he met Michael Jordan. The team committed to him, ultimately forcing Shaq out the door. When I was growing up, he was the future.

Anyways, I love Penny. Excited to have him on the team.
2023 Historical Draft: Toronto Raptors

Point Guard: Anfernee Hardaway, Fat Lever, Terrell Brandon
Shooting Guard: Paul Westphal, Paul Pressey
Small Forward: Marques Johnson, Danny Granger
Power Forward: Jermaine O'Neal, Bobby Jones, Kiki Vandeweghe
Center: Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka

He was 2nd on my list behind Carter. Not gaudy stats but so [dang] exciting to watch.

I was wondering if your gamble would pay off there!

Penny was terrific. A lot of people focus on what injuries robbed us of with him, but we got 4 great seasons out of him, including one brilliant one in 95-96

I'll stir up the controversy- the talent is just far too good to let him slide any further.

I'll take the 2011 Defensive Player of the Year and Runner up for MVP

OKC selects Dwight Howard with the 6th overall pick.

Now there’s the MORANIS No.1 off the board.

Although in my heart and soul I take Penny over Dwight, numbers be [dang]ed.
Man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time.

But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.

RPG will find this unforgivable. He was definitely worth picking here though, great choice.

Penny was the best PG in the NBA at a time when John Stockton was just exiting his prime and Gary Payton was at his peak.

Best non-MJ guard in the league in 1995-96.

I was very close to picking him myself. I had expected Zo to be off the board by my pick. I thought along with McGrady that Zo was the one of the two most likely guys to be picked before my selection. I was leaning between Penny, a big man and a wing.

My son has been screaming at this board for someone to take him.

I thought I was going to be picking one of Zo or Penny- really thought Dwight was going top 4. Surprisingly, in what I thought was the most unpredictable draft, my top 6 are all off the board after 6 picks.

The Orlando Magic are dominating this draft!
Thank you ;)

It really does show how much individual talent they had during the 90s and 00s though. Obviously injuries robbed them of Penny & Hill being long-term servants, but they also had Shaq on top of this!
