This was the type of game no one said the Celtics could win. Grind it out, not shooting the 3 well ect. This was more impressive as a win than game 5 IMO. It showed them they can win games if their shot isn’t falling. Play defense.

In fairness to the players, they didn't implement the "shoot threes no matter what" offense, nor did they deemphasize defense.

Until last week, Joe was happy trying to outscore teams 120-118, and he criticized the team's offense when they were performing elitely but without enough three point shots.

What he often criticizes our offense it's more about lack of pace and space and how it impacts ball movement which in turn lead to decreased three point shot opportunities or to bad three point attempts at that, and a stagnant offense which then carries over to defensive lapses. So in the inverse, just as a quick glimpse when presented with 3-point attempts he can more often than not deduce that we may have had issue with our pace and spacing or not.

Whether we agree with it or not, part of why he focuses his discourse about offense is because he sees the relationship of how when we do poorly on offense how it affects us negatively defensively, though I too wish he emphasized defense more.
If he's critical of our lack of pace why do we play so many cutesy games with seeing how much time we can waste by being as slow as humanly possible? It's hard to be speedy when we actively stamp out transition opportunities, or opportunities to get into our offence quickly before the D sets fully.

Ask the players, they've been doing this under all the coaches they've had.

He leans on his players more than any other coach probably out of necessity.
I get the impression that Mazzulla is coaching from the perspective of "we're all in this together" as opposed to a traditional "I'm in charge," perspective that most coaches take.

Given his age, the fact that he was an assistant last season (and not even the lead assistant) and the way he got elevated to the head job, I think this is probably the only way he could've approached it. I doubt anyone in the locker room would've respected his authority if he came in trying to impose his will like Belicek.

Say a new CEO gets hired at your work. For a year he showed a refusal to do common sense things that experts in your industry do. Things that your wife would be able to say make sense despite not being in the industry.

Your company is now struggling in areas that were once a strength.

You would not be saying give this guy more time because he's learning.

Joe has done better over the last few games. We actually seem to play better against their zone by my eye test. But we're in this spot largely because of his incompetence.

We will make history tonight but my fear is there won't be much left in the tank for the finals.
Softened on Joe.
