Victor Wembenyama

I know, why make a thread on a player we have absolutely no shot at. It's a fair point to raise, but I really just want to bring some CelticsStrong attention to the monster that Wembenyama is becoming.



You've all probably seen the image below when people talk about Wembenyama, referencing Chet's height and trying to make some guesses about how tall he actually is. I think using the guy next to him is more interesting. On his right (our left) is Zach Edey, of Purdue. He is listed as 7'4".

So, is Wembenyama 7'5"? Looks about right when you see him dunk with almost no jump.

Here are some links of highlights. I know, highlights can be deceiving. But these kinds of ball skills are insane for someone his size. They'd be insane for someone 6'11"!

The point of this thread, more than anything, is to just keep tabs on him as a prospect. Barring catastrophe he's almost a certain #1 pick. Not sure we've ever seen a combination of skill and length like this.

Hope he doesn’t end up in Utah.  As fluid as this kid looks for his size, I still think he probably needs to drop on screens against NBA athleticism.  And Utah already failed once at surrounding a drop big with appropriate defensive talent on the perimeter.  Let somebody else do it.

He looks incredible though.  Has a chance to be even more skilled with the ball in his hands than Yao was.

He’s definitely an intriguing prospect, that’s for sure. What’s a potential comp, Porzingis? Similar size and athleticism. Both have 3pt range.  I haven’t seen too much of Victor, but there isn’t really any other player currently in the NBA that seems similar.

Victor has a much better handle and court vision than Porzingis. The man could be a potential point 5 ala Jokic.

He’s much more skilled with the ball than Porzingis. He also has a near 8 foot wingspan, so his potential for disruption is immense. With that kind of length I think he would be unbelievable in the role Rob Williams plays in our defence.

On offence he reminds me more of Durant than Porzingis. Way better movement shooter and cutter. He’s also a good passer - throws good entry passes and zips cross-court passes with either hand.

Yeah, had we lost early in the playoffs, I might entertain such a fantasy.  But coming off a Finals run, the future is now.

Still, it was nice of Brad to put in top-12 protections on the pick we gave up for Brogdon, in case things do go horribly wrong.
