I just heard on the radio someone speculating that the increase in negative, in-game "fan - player" interactions are driven by an increase in alcohol consumption and an increase in popularity of betting apps (this was in regards to interactions between fans and Kyrie Irving in particular).

I had no idea that betting apps were so popular, let alone that people show up at live games and bet during the course of the game (isn't watching the game exciting enough?).

I'm curious to hear what others on celticsblog think.

What's the link to betting apps?  Is the theory that fans will be more rowdy if they have money riding on the game?

I don't think there's a huge correlation between betting and misbehavior.  More, it's a mix of adrenaline, loss of inhibition due to being in a friendly "mob" (the crowd), and oftentimes, alcohol.  People get emotionally invested, often having part of their identity intertwined with their fanhood.

Yeah, I'd lean in the direction of a confounding variable. Obviously alcohol is a known problem, but perhaps people who are more interested in drinking and gambling are less interested in the sport and therefore less respectful. It's not necessarily the gambling apps that are causing the behavior.

Yes, this sounds closer to the truth.

The speaker on the radio was speculating that it's not just money riding on the game, but specific outcomes associated with a player (ie, points or assists or whatever). I don't use these apps or gamble so I'm not totally sure how it works -- my knowledge is basically what I have learned from the movie "Uncut Gems" :)

Also keep in mind that the speaker is trying to explain the *increase* in these types of incidents. It could just be alcohol alone (alcohol consumption has increased over time).

Is there actually an increase in these types of interactions?  Or is the # of cameras and presence of social media just ensuring that every one of us sees and doesn't forget every single one of them?  I lean towards thinking its the second.

Good question.

I sort of suspect both.

I think the other factor at play is that, because of Covid, people have become ruder towards each other. See: the increase in incidents on planes between unruly passengers and flight attendants, the apparent increase in "road rage", etc. Of course, as above, increased alcohol consumption likely also playing a role in these.

I use DraftKings & Fanduel.  Mostly just for college/NFL betting and futures bet.  I find trying to bet on regular season NBA/MLB/NHL games to be a mostly fruitless endeavor.

The alleged link is actual in game live betting that you can now do at an arena.  So as the game moves along the odds change and you can bet, and because you can do it legally from your phone now, people in the arena can do it now when they couldn't before.

That's where I'm at, too. We're paying more attention to how fans are acting now, but it's always been this way. Are fans worse now than they were when Cedric Maxwell went into the stands to fight someone? I doubt it.

Yeah this was a real dumb take by Woj. For example, he was relating it to the Kyrie stuff, where gambling isn't even legal. This stuff has been happening for a long time, and arguably was even worse in the past. I have heard the same stuff being yelled at games now as 20 years ago, if not moderately less bad now. Probably the biggest differences are that players feel more comfortable reporting it or speaking about it (which is a good thing), there are more cameras and they are not expected to take it from where we have moved as a society. I think we all know Bill Russell heard 10 times more offensive things than anything Kyrie has heard. And if someone yelled the kind of stuff that was yelled at Russell now the fans themselves would report the fan. Also, I have literally never heard anyone yell about a gambling result at the game (Kyrie you suck I needed 8.5 assists from you!). Also with these prop bets it is basically completely unclear when you lose a bet unless they happen to miss a free throw with like 5 seconds left when you need one point. Woj obviously doesn't gamble, because this stuff is just not how it works.

Eh as someone that does this, this is not a super common type of betting. Only a handful of sites even offer live props and they are very very heavily juiced because they have to cover their bums because they can lose huge if you see jokic get injured and people slam his unders (I have done this before, but it is very hard to do and they move lines lightening quick). Very few people even attempt to do this, because unless you really know what you are doing the books will basically free roll you. Kind of like playing a casino at the airport.

If you are trying to bet a team to win or the total live you often have to try to get the bet in like 5-8 times because the lines are moving so fast that your bets constantly get canceled over odds changes. On top of that, there have been betting apps on smart phones in every state for about 10 years that were not quote un quote "legal" but nobody has ever gone to jail for using them. Bovada and Sportsbook still had their odds presented all over the place and they were very commonly used.

All in all, it is a really bad take by Woj, especially given these events often happen in states that don't have legalized gambling yet (which is currently I believe is only about 20 states, maybe a little less).

Oh I agree it is a bad take, I was just correcting what he was actually arguing.
