Kobe Bryant's final jersey number will be something this year's NBA All-Stars play to reach.

The NBA announced major changes to the All-Star format on Thursday, turning every quarter into a mini-game for charity before an untimed final quarter with a target score that will decide which team wins. Scores will be reset -- back to 0-0 -- at the start of the second and third quarters, then restored to begin the fourth quarter.

That's where the tribute to Bryant and the No. 24 jersey he wore for the last decade of his NBA career comes into play. The team that wins the All-Star Game will be the first to reach a target score, determined by the total points the team in the lead scored in the first three quarters combined -- plus 24, the obvious nod to Bryant.

The NBA said there will be multiple tributes to Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and the seven others who lost their lives in Sunday's helicopter crash throughout All-Star weekend, including the showcase game on Feb. 16. The target score is just one of them.

"We spent a lot of time considering the right target number to use for the fourth quarter," said Byron Spruell, the NBA's president for league operations. "Through the events of this week it became clear to us that the only appropriate number for this season's All-Star game is 24."

The target score is the latest addition to the NBA's quest to make the game more competitive, something that players have wanted for some time.

Can't they just play a good-old game of basketball? These stupid gimmicks never work in any sports.

So it's really 4 mini-games and the 4th quarter is going to last about 3 minutes?  Maybe I am misunderstanding this convoluted non-sense...

Given the way players play defense in the All-Star game, the first three quarters could be over after 8 possessions in each quarter. What's that? 5 minutes? Less?

The target score is the latest addition to the NBA's quest to make the game more competitive, something that players have wanted for some time.

Really? If they want to be competitive, why don't they play some defense for a change?

It's been many years since I watched the all-star game or any of the all-star weekend festivities (other than a few highlights after)—it's just guys taking turns jacking long-range shots and dunking, with virtually no defensive resistance offered.

Then again, I'm of the opinion that all-star events in any sport have outlived their charm and usefulness, plus they rob the best players of the valuable opportunity to get some much-needed rest. Pro leagues should just name all-stars and then (maybe) have some sort of all-star festivities after the season is over.

The 24 pt target is only for the 4th, the first 3 are score as much as you want.

This is that goofy "Elam Ending" format we debated a while back in the forums: https://forum.celticsstrong.com/index.php?topic=101106.0

It seems really dumb but if it makes them try harder in the 4th maybe it could be ok.

It's an exhibition game.  If you're gonna go gimmicky, I'd rather see it done in an exhibition than in the regular  season.  Its benefiting charities too so I really have no problem.

Also, its stars against stars.  I could really care less about defense.   Under the old format for years, it wasn't like they were playing defense either.  It was really the last 6-8 minutes of the 4th quarter before you started seeing guys put forth any defensive effort.

And with this new format, you probably will actually see more defensive effort now.

So the first 3 quarters are each mini-games for charity, which might improve competition, and the last quarter is the first to hit a point total, which also makes it a little more competitive. What's the issue?

The proposal sounds completely stupid, and I think they worded it as poorly as possible, but it's not actually a terrible idea.   They just made it much more complicated with the score resetting to zero, and then bringing the scores back and adding them up...

But in reality, you're just getting rewarded for winning each quarter + winning the game.

It's actually the old Continental Basketball Association 7 point system + Elam Ending (as fwf pointed out) with a Kobe twist.

So in the old CBA, during each game, seven points were awarded - three for winning the game, and one point for each quarter in which a team outscored their opponent. Team standings were determined by the number of points, rather than win-loss percentage.

I've seen the idea of a CBA 7 point system floated around over the years to try to make the NBA more competitive.  The idea is to keep a team playing hard in the 4Q even in a blowout, because even if you're down 30 going into the 4th, you can still earn a point by outscoring your opponent in that quarter.

Personally, I'd be open to the NBA trying out the old CBA 7 point system in the regular season.  Less open to them implementing the Elam Ending though.

Ahhhh...that makes more sense. For some odd reason I understood it the other way around.

Still hate the idea.

Yep, not watching.

Over the years, they have taken a semi-fun game and ruined it completely.  Just go back to East versus West, normal basketball.
