Some notes and thoughts:

1) It's for two years, $7.5 million.  It also means he's not an expiring contract any more, so we can stop seeing his name in Celticsblog trade ideas.

2) It's always been unlikely the Thunder would match a decent offer made to Reggie Jackson next summer (should he not be traded beforehand), but this probably seals it.  Thunder are now at about $72 million next year, and assuming no major trades between now and July, will have a choice of Jackson or the full MLE.  Had they not kept Collison, they probably had room for both unless Jackson got the max.  Now it will make sense to let him walk if he gets an offer sheet beginning around $9 million in year 1.

3) It's really cool that a role player like Nick Collison can have a career lasting over a decade and spend it with one team, especially in the modern NBA where role players are considered very fungible and move around a lot on 2-3 year deals, and finish their careers on vet min deals.

4) Durant thinks incredibly highly of Collison, and the loyalty the Thunder have just shown him can't hurt in keeping Durant in 2016.

5) The Thunder used a special salary cap rule for extensions for this deal -- one that pretty much only Nick Collison was eligible for.  Huge credit goes to Mark Deeks for calling this extension back in October.  http://bballbreakdown.com/2014/10/30/nick-collison-unheralded-cba-pioneer/
