Game Notes

The Celtics continue their home stand as they host the Hawks for the 3rd of 4 regular season games.  The Celtics won a close one in Atlanta on November 6 by just 110-107. They also won 110-99 in Atlanta on November 18.  They will face off once more in Boston on April 8.

The Hawks have the worst record in the league with just 15 wins.  They are 4-6 in their last 10 games and lost their last game.  They are 4-20 on the road.  The Celtics are 5-5 in their last 10 games and have won their last 2 games.  They are 19-8 at home.

Dennis Schroder played on on Wednesday with a sore shoulder and is listed as questionable for this game.  If he can't play, I'm not sure who would get the start in his place.  DeAndre Bembry is out with a groin injury.

Kyrie Irving missed Wednesday's game with a quad injury and is a game time decision in this one.  Shane Larkin is also a game time decision with a sore knee.  Marcus Morris took a hard fall on Wednesday and is questionable for this one.  Marcus Smart (hand) and Gordon Hayward (ankle) are out.

Key Matchups
(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1626179.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/dennis_schroder.png)
Terry Rozier vs Dennis Schroder
Schroder is playing very well in spite of the Hawks losing record.  He is averaging 19.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.1 steals.  He put up 23 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals vs the Celtics in their first meeting and 23 points and 9 assists in the second meeting. Of course, if Kyrie can play, it would make it easier, but either way,  limiting Schroder will go a long way toward getting a win.

(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1627759.png) vs (http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/203145.png)
Jaylen Brown vs Kent Bazemore
Bazemore is averaging 13.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 steals.  He struggled in the first meeting between these two teams with just 5 points and 5 turnovers.  He did pull down 8 rebounds, though.  Hopefully Brown will play well and win this matchup.

Honorable Mention
Jayson Tatum vs Taurean Prince
Prince is averaging 12.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists.  Tatum should be able to win this matchup if he continues to play as well as he has been.

Keys to the Game
Defense - Defense wins games.   The Celtics remain first in the league with a defensive rating of 99.7 while the Hawks are 26th with a defensive rating of 108.4.  The Celtics have to keep making defense a priority and not let up on the effort necessary to get stops.  The Celtics allowed the Hawks to score 107 points in their first meeting and that is not acceptable.  The Hawks are close to the Celtics in scoring and better in some things and so defense will be the difference in this game.

Take Care of the Ball - The Hawks are 2nd in forcing turnovers, forcing 16.0 per game.  They are first in the league with 18.6 points off turnovers.  The Celtics have to avoid making sloppy passes and they have to be aware when dribbling to avoid turning the ball over as the Hawks will make them pay if they do.

Rebound -  Rebounding gives the Celtics extra possessions and it also deprives the Hawks of the same.  The Celtics are  averaging 44.4 rebounds per game (9th) while the Hawks are averaging 40.8 rebounds per game (26th).   The Celtics need to continue to put out extra effort to win the battle of the boards as the Hawks are 12th with 12.8 second chance points per game and the Celtics need to limit them in that area.

Be Aggressive
- The Celtics must be the team that plays harder and that wants this win more.  They have to be aggressive in diving for loose balls, in going to the basket, in getting stops on the defensive end, and in going after rebounds.  They have to play harder and be more aggressive from start to finish.  The more aggressive team will usually get the benefit of calls.  It's always easy to let up against losing teams, but if they do, they may end up with a loss as, in spite of their record, the Hawks play hard.

X-Factors
Trap Game - This has the makings of a trap game.  Atlanta has just 15 wins this season.  The Celtics have won two straight, including a blowout win over the Knicks.  The Celtics have to be careful not to underestimate the Hawks and they have to come out and play hard and respect the Hawks as a team that came close to beating them they first time they met.

Next Man Up - Against the Knicks, Terry Rozier and others stepped up their game to help the Celtics get a win in spite of missing Kyrie Irving, Marcus Smart and Shane Larkin.  The Celtics may also be missing Marcus Morris in this one and so they will need others to step up also.

This is the kind of game where we'll play down to our opponent, some scrub like Bazemore will get hot from 3, they'll play with energy, they'll get more calls than they should, and we'll struggle to win by 5 or 6.  I don't like these types of games.

That's fine.  Give Rozier another chance to earn trust and build confidence.  He won't physically outclass Shroeder like he did Jack, but I still want him to play well.

EDIT:  Wait, Larkin is out?  Who do we even have at backup PG?

Larkin didn't play the last game either. I think it's Nader. BTW, Schroeder is a game time call also.

Yep, Nader, and I’m hoping Kadeem Allen gets some real minutes because I’m curious to see what he can do against bad NBA competition.

It’s a good thing we’re playing Atlanta.  Assuming the starting lineup is Rozier, Brown, Tatum, Horford, and Baynes, the entire 5-man bench (since we’ve got ten healthy players) will all be rookies.

Hawks were just up 21-19, and Gorman said "The Hawks can take the lead here now with a 3" as Hawks were coming down court.

I like Allen’s defense.

Anybody else notice Mike Gorman making A LOT of mistakes lately, almost like he's not connected to the game sometime?

Hawks were just up 21-19, and Gorman said "The Hawks can take the lead here now with a 3" as Hawks were coming down court.

Yes i did, i actually assumed the score was incorrect as Gorman is so on
Also is eveyrthing ok with tommy?

some of these lineups are terrible. but this is the time to rest the players

Well... they're resting cause they are hurt.  Playing the only guards we have and sometimes no guards at all.
true

but if this were the finals then kyrie would be playing

Yeah I am in agreement there.

9-3 fouls on a blatant flop. It's simply amazing at how terrible officials are in this league. Consistency on both ends is LITERALLY too much to ask of them.

And they wonder why the relationship with the players and fans is trash...  ::)

Nader looks incredibly lost on defense.

Yeah, not saying he's hopeless but from what I've seen from Red Claws games, he can dominate people base on his physical tools but just seems lost on the court sometimes. Time and playing will help that. Just don't think he will see much time with the big club, especially now with Monroe on the roster as well.

Every player the Celtics have used off the bench is a rookie. Two of their starters have an average age of 20. And Terry Rozier is making just his second NBA start.

Terry Rozier has been excellent.  He's an imperfect player but a valuable member of this team.  After the last 2 games it's becoming less clear which of Marcus or Terry I like moving forward.

Marcus is 11 days older than Terry.

The difference is Terry just never had the confidence...till now. Marcus has always been confident even though his offense sux.  Hopefully Terry can keep it up when he's running the 2nd unit. If so, Marcus is definitely expendable.

Marcus' energy and defense down the stretch is the difference maker for me -- for now.  Few players can do what Smart can do.  And he doesn't over-shoot down the stretch when he plays with scorers.

Nice, easy, comfortable win. Gets Kyrie some more rest and more burn for the rookies. And Jayson Tatum might be some form of higher being. My goodness.

Great job by our young one’s. I feel guilty looking at free agents in 2019 and wondering how creative Danny might be at end of next year?😁 We have super valuable potential players on our team.

Why is Nader getting shots in the 4th quarter?

I cringe every time he shoots.

my IPad shivers  when he shoots  ;D

Because that's what we want in the playoffs, scrubs with confidence? :)

If Semi, Nader, and Allen are seeing major minutes in the playoffs, no amount of confidence can save us.

True, but that doesn't mean we don't want to develop those guys, if for no other reason as future assets.

Know the commercial. I understand every word they are saying but have no idea what those words mean in the context of the sport of cricket, which I think is the idea. Donkey drop? That's really a term in cricket? SMH.

These guys are 23, 24, and 25, respectively. There's very little development you should expect to see there. Sometimes, it's ok to just admit that scrub players are scrubs.

Sometimes it’s also okay to admit that you need guys to soak up minutes and not sweat it if they make a combined $2.6 million.

The two most interesting plays of the night.  Credit goes to Daniel Theis on the 1st one for tipping it out in heavy traffic to Rozier for the 3.  Love the way Theis is playing lately!

Second one was just a brain-fart by Prince to not look that the ball was still in play.  He assumed it sailed out of bounds and was gesturing angrily at Ilyasova about the the bad pass.  The ref actually kept the ball in play and saved them from a turnover, but it became a turnover anyway.

I love the way Theis plays every play of every game he never gives up. He also had a couple nice blocks last night as well.

On the second play it's like everybody including Brown had a brain fart EXCEPT Tatum who took it for the flush.

Thought the best play of the night was the left handed bounce pass in transition down the court from Brown to Tatum who put in the layup. That pass is a 9 out of 10 difficulty pass that was made masterfully

Tatum and Rozier had great games last night, and unfortunately for Jaylen, they overshadowed multiple positive steps forward in his game. He is still raw and figuring out how to stay engaged the whole game, but its because of rhythm, not effort or passion.

He had a great drive where he drew both his man and Horford's man into the paint, and then kicked it out to Horford for the wide open 3.

He had multiple quick passes that set up teammates for easy scores.

His drives looked much more creative. The drive to the right, hopestep left around the helpside, and finish the left hand was awesome! The no-look finish over his shoulder looked a bit like Kobe (except Kobe would have gotten that call).

Using the pick-and-roll, he had multiple pull-up 3s.

His defense on-ball was not great, although his positioning was pretty good the whole game.

I've been encouraged by his increased ability to create for others of late.  Important step for a guy with his athleticism.
