Game Notes
The Heat and Celtics meet for the third of four match-ups this season. The teams have split their two meetings so far this season, with both teams winning on their home court. Boston has won their last 10 regular season games at home against Miami. The Heat is 15-32 all time in games played in Boston.

This game is all about streaks.  The last time these two teams met in Boston, the Celtics ended their 6 game losing streak and extended their win streak at home against the Heat to 10.  5 years ago on March 18th, the Celtics ended Houston's 22 game win streak.   Five years later, the Heat come into Boston with a 22 game win streak and the Celtics are hoping that they can repeat history and end this 22 game win streak as well.

Kevin Garnett is considered 50-50 for this game and if he can't go or is limited, it gets a lot tougher for the Celtics.   But the Celtics have overcome a lot of adversity and a complete team effort would still give them a chance to win.    I'm being positive and putting KG into the starting lineup, hoping he'll be good to go.

The Heat are playing in back to back games and had to travel after their afternoon game in Toronto.  For once, the Celtics have had the day off before the big matchup.    The Celtics need to come out focused and play as a team from the start to the final buzzer.

Key Matchups
(http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/avery_bradley.jpg) (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/courtney_lee.jpg) vs  (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/mario_chalmers.jpg)(http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/dwyane_wade.jpg)
Avery Bradley/Courtney Lee  vs Mario Chalmers/Dwyane Wade
The Celtics "Pit Bull" backcourt will need to contain the Heat's backcourt players.   I expect Bradley and Lee to tag team against Chalmers and Wade to keep Miami from getting into their offense and disrupting Wade especially from getting hot on offense.

(http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/662.jpg)  vs  (http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/1966.jpg)
Paul Pierce vs LeBron James
This is always a tough matchup for any team.  Expect Jeff Green to get the call to cover LeBron much of the time in this game.  Green has been effective in the past guarding him and so should take some of the pressure off of Pierce by doing so.

Honorable Mention

Kevin Garnett vs Chris Bosh
I know that KG is considered 50-50 for this game but I'm being positive in hoping he will be good to go.  KG can defend Bosh very well,  but if KG doesn't play the Celtics will struggle with this matchup because Bass won't be near as effective covering him.

Keys to the Game
Defense
Both teams pride themselves on their defense and defense is always a key to winning.   The Celtics are 7th in points allowed (95.6) while the Heat are 8th (95.8).  The Celtics are 4th in FG% allowed (43.7%) and the Heat are 9th (44.1%).  The Celtics are 2nd in defending the 3 point line (33.4%) while the Heat are 12th (35.2%)  If the Celtics want to win this game, they will have to play lock down team defense for 48 minutes.

Rebound
The Heat are the only team in the league that rebound worse than the Celtics.   The Celtics are 29th with 40.0 RPG while the Heat are 30th at 38.5 RPG.     The Celtics need to crash the boards and prevent the Heat from getting second chance baskets and tip ins.  They can also limit Miami's fast breaks  and get some fast break opportunities of their own by crashing the boards as well.   They must rebound as a team with everyone going to the basket to box out or rebound.

Be Aggressive
When the Celtics are aggressive they are tough to beat.  They have to be aggressive in going to the basket and not settle for jumpers, especially if they aren't falling.    The starters need to come out and play aggressively from the beginning and the second unit needs to come in and pick up where they leave off.  They have to attack the basket and be aggressive on defense especially.

Bench Play

The Celtics need their second unit to play well.  The Heat are 21-1 when their bench outscores their opponents' bench.  The Celtics reserves need to be aggressive and play with energy.  They also have to defend to keep the Heat's reserves from getting an advantage.

X-Factors
Officiating and KG
We know that the Heat get special treatment from the refs.  A player as physical as LeBron can't go weeks without getting called for a foul without the refs letting him get away with a lot.  In their last 3 games, they have had huge free throw discrepancies - Heat 29/Raptors 12, Heat 27/Sixers 12, Heat 30/Hawks 14.   It appears that the Heat are getting some help keeping their streak alive.   We can only hope that the Celtics can get a fair shot from them in this one.

Also, KG is 50-50 to play in this game and it becomes much tougher to win if KG can't play or is limited.

main deal for me is to see KG get healthy again.

One key to the game that I didn't see mentioned was to limit turnovers. If we can stay under a dozen which is very difficult against Miami, we have a great chance to end there win streak.

He's fine people really think KG has in injury? He just had a maintenance/rest day so he's fresh going forward. I think it was Terry on his ESPNBoston diary who spilled the beans...said he just had a night off. Don't let Doc fool you he wants this one bad and a spry KG will help make that happen.

You can book it the win streak will be snapped tomorrow. :P

I just heard an interview from terry and he said he had no idea what the status on KG was. Either way how do you know hes fine? Because reports are saying different. Reports and doc are saying he has an injury and hes 50/50 tomorrow .

So why should we ignore all of that and just go with "Hes fine"? He could very well be fine but I just don't get why people are so quick to dismiss the very possible possibility that KG might indeed have in injury.

I don't get it either, I have no doubt that KG is injured (doesn't mean he won't play)... when they rest KG, they call it rest, when he is injured they call it what it is... they don't have to make up injuries to rest him! KG rested a few weeks ago... DNP-Rest.

Look, KG better play tomorrow.  To me, this game is the DECIDING FACTOR of where we really stand.  It's a big game.  People are talking about seedings and stuff.  It all means nothing if we can't beat the Heat.  That is the fact.  Beating them tomorrow will prove A LOT of things and it will be us basically sending a message to the Heat and to the rest of the league.  And just imagine what winning tomorrow will do to our confidence?

KG sitting out tomorrow won't do us any good at all because not only would we get our behind kicked, we would end up with a false sense of where we really stand going into the playoffs.

I'd rather the Heat think we suck. We shine most when underestimated. Let's keep our plans to ourselves, and only ourselves :) if we win tomorrow, the Heat will be looking for revenge in the playoffs. That's scary, but I think 22 is where the streak ends.  Game of the year tomorrow. Let's do it.

Go Celtics..

whether KG will play tom or not... as long as our starters are healthy in our playoff run will going to have a great chance

Being a fan of a team doesn't mean you can't be realistic and honest with yourself. I root for the celtics at all times. That doesn't mean I think they will win all 82 games. Or beat the heat, or win a championship. I hope they do, but realistically, I know they probably won't.

Sometimes this team plays its best when they are the clear underdog with their backs against  the wall.  I think there is something to the Celtics playing down to bad teams as well.

I was clearly wrong thinking LA didn't have a prayer against the Pacer s other night without Kobe.

Maybe Lebron will miss the bus to TD GARDEN .. ;D

Gonna be a " bar fight" , even if KG an't in it.

So KG's groin injury has turned into an "illness"?  Must have been messin' around with LeBron's ma.  Oh boy, Delonte gon be mad!

Man, my mind takes me to some weird places sometimes.

the energy/stress KG would expend on his body to WIN a game against the HEAT would probally be as much as  it takes to win the NEXT THREE GAMES combined.

Probally better , use him to win the easier to win the next few games than to kill him to win this one game ....

Don't want to kill off PP and KG to win this heading into playoffs and then drop the next 6 games because they are recovering.

Good news tho, doc says if KG wasn't sick then he'd play today. He expects him to play next game.

Glad he's not playing. The more rest he gets, the better.  Nothing to lose tonight as expectations are low -- go hard and let the Heat know we'll be a tough out.

Impressive that Bradley was able to get back in the play and get a deflection. Pity none of his teammates got back to get that loose ball. Breakaway dunk for LeBron instead.

This is where the refs got the buzzer from Stern going off in their pockets and they have to start making it a lot closer all of a sudden. Nice "traveling" call.

When will I believe the NBA refs do it honestly with no interference? As soon as they put Tommy in charge of NBA officiating and not a minute sooner. Or maybe when Roger Goodell takes out Stern and his minions like the ending of Godfather and then installs himself as the first commissioner of two major sports.

Doc is doing his darndest to make us lose this game. Wade is on the floor, and you keep Bradley on the bench? You sit Green, and your plan is to use Bass as the sole "big" on the unit?

This is a layup drill for Miami, and completely unnecessary. [dang]it Doc, stop being an freaking idiot.

Or maybe when Roger Goodell takes out Stern and his minions like the ending of Godfather and then installs himself as the first commissioner of two major sports.

Eja. I can't agree with you more we were on the exact same wavelength. I said to myself look at the score, we are about to kill them, Green's swag factor is through the roof.

I was thinking please show that replay and they never do with a shady call like that.

Celtics-Green
Heat-refs

True

Yeah, I am not one to blame the refs, but it seemed like every time down the floor Miami was getting a call on a hand-check or a bump - total bummer. The Celtics way outplayed the Heat and it doesn't even matter...

This could end very badly...

This is the first time I've seen Jeff Green pin his ears back and attack with no hesitation.  Normally he's patient.  Thinks too much.

When he just gets the ball and attacks, he's almost unguardable.

you havent been paying attention then

I just realized Andrew Bynum is out for the season.  Great move by LA to get rid of him.

These refs are making me vomit.  I mean I know we started turning the ball over but we aren't being allowed to play defense.

Bass-Pierce-Lee-Crawford-Terry was a disaster of a unit, and Doc refused to change it, refused to call a time-out while Miami just had a layup drill against us.

Just doesn't make sense.

foul discrepancy on the 2nd quarter

14 to 5?

around that
That's some mess.
Besides that copy the first quarter and don't let the Heat get too close and this could be winnable. The refs need to do a better job also because they are really embarrassing.

I don't like blaming the refs for things, but it's difficult to see the Celtics outplay a team by that much and only have a six-point lead to show for it.  I felt like they deserved better than they got in the second quarter.

so ure going to ignore the bogus calls? lol

our first quarter was obviously our best
2nd quarter, we allowed them to be the aggressors

if we duplicate the 1st quarter in the 3rd, we can put this game away
otherwise, no.

I don't usually complain about the officiating, but this is so blatantly one-sided I am ready to punch my plasma.

Lebron Juice James is just bulling his way into the lane. any resistance by Boston is whistled. but let Pierce drive into the lane and it's an offensive foul.

did you see James just ramming into Jeff Green during foul shots ??? you are not supposed to be able to just bulldoze someone out of the way.

Miami closed the gap because they were allowed to force their way to the lane area, while Boston was whistled for trying to do the same.

it's sickening to see Stern & Co. on their knees to Steroid Lebron and Pat Riley. Stern has been screwing the Celtics any time he has been given the opportunity since he became commissioner. the little weasel is still mad at Red for being the icon of the league - his fragile ego is still driving him. sickening.

There's bad calls in every game. Ill be the first one to admit NBA refs are the worst officials in sports. Complaining every game after every call gets tiring tho. Especially when they aren't even calling that bad of a game, IMO anyways.

I wonder if the refs are going to end their 22 game win streak tonight.

Refs + Heat + 4th quarter = :'(

You guys complain about the refs even when we're the ones getting calls lol.

your unending desire to be Mr. Objectivity really takes the form of thinking that this game has been called the same both ways and that The Celtics are getting the better of the calls? Really?

I'm not assigning any win/lose aspect to the ref's in this game but the contrarian stance that leads one to say there haven't been some bad calls against The C's in this game is  ::) ???

There's bad calls in every game. Ill be the first one to admit NBA refs are the worst officials in sports. Complaining every game after every call gets tiring tho. Especially when they aren't even calling that bad of a game, IMO anyways.

Look, I don't really disagree. But do you really think that 2nd quarter was called well? That there haven't been some inconsistencies in how travels and illegal screens have been called? I don't really think this game has been so bad but there have been some poor calls. And, well, not to say it is a bad bad thing but you do have something of a rep as the guy who steps in and calls objectivity when people are venting in a game thread.

What a great stretch there by Wilcox, Green, Lee, Crawford and Jet.  If we win, that start to the fourth will be a big reason.

Now comes LBJ.  He'll take it strong and he'll get to the line.  Every time.  Must continue to convert on offense.

Crud. Terrible defense on the inbounds pass.

Yeah -- but sometimes Lebron just llooks like a man among boys.  Misses and and just grabs the rebound and powers it back up.

have to seriously wonder at the coaching of this team.  Green had 43 with 9 minutes to go and never scored again.  should have made a much better effort at getting him the ball where he could be effective like he was during the first 3 quarters.  Miami had absolutely no answer for him

yup, another pet peeve of mine - missed FTs.  Green, PP and Crawford each missed enough to get the C's the win.  even if they each just hit one more, the C's win.  PP 3-6, Crawford 1-4.  these are pros that should be capable of 75% on their FTs

Celtics basically won 98% of the game and let,  then mr super human Lebron take over the last 5 minutes playing fresh as a daisy , like he does so many times to save their necks at the end of the game.....seen it so many times this year.

until Lebron gets hurt or more age on him , not gonna see many wins I'm afraid.

2nd-Sucks that we lost.  Really sucks.  It was one of the most fun games I've watched in a while, however.  Major kudos to the whole team for the effort.  I thought we we're dead in the water without KG, but I was wrong.
3rd-Unfortunately, we let that one slip away.  Just too many mistakes at the end.  Missed FT's, turnovers, blown defensive assignments, and quick shots we're are undoing.  Miami, in the end, showed why they are unstoppable.  They just have too much top-end talent to get beat by anything less than a near-perfect performance.

Green definitely needed a rest in the 4Q. He averages 26 MPG and he played 40 tonight.

What kills me is the back to back Crawford & Terry turnovers.

End of the game the Celtics had good looks and made LeBron take a contested long jumper to win it. I mean, it's almost as if he's the best player in the world and the Heat are the best team in the NBA or something.

Game was fixed. The out of bounds play that was overturned the official that was calling most of the calls v the Celtics grabbed and tugged on Scott Foster wrists as they were viewing the call when Foster initially called it Celtics ball and then they reversed it. Was on Jumbo-tron. Just turned in my season seats.

How many layups did Wade and LeBron have tonight? KG plays C's win.

If KG played green might have never went off the way he did.

The C's didn't need 40 from Green. They need about 20 a night. KG could have covered the rest. We wouldn't have watched Bass continue to rotate over too late as well.

C's lost by 2 points without KG. Not exactly impressed with the Heat.

The Heat have won 23 in a row now. I think it's about time to be impressed.

Lol, agreed.

Why? It wasn't 23 against us! They are scared of us not the other way around!

maybe not, but defensively KG makes up for it'

the downgrade from Garnett to Bass/Wilcox is a large one

I hope Green starts from now on.  One, it gets Bass off the floor which is a huge, huge, huge plus.  Two, Green is at his best when he's going up against PFs who have no chance to stay with him on drives.  With Pierce getting defended by SFs, it means Green has a true PF matchup unlike Carmelo and Lebron who still get defended by SFs.  This is unlikely to happen because 1) it's Doc, 2) it's Doc and 3) Doc must think Bass is decent for some reason.

There's no telling how KG plays if he played. He could have had a bad game. Hes had some really bad games lately, who knows. I just think saying "If KG would have played we win" is a bit silly and untrue. We might have, maybe we lose by more, nobody really knows.

Yes, I consider it a nightmarish season.  Losing Rondo, Sully and Barbosa has pretty much done in any chance we had at getting to the Finals.  If others want to disagree, fine.  You'll see soon enough that you're wrong.

That said, just because I view the season as lost, doesn't mean I am not still enjoying watching the boys play.  Quite the opposite.  It's actually rather liberating, having zero expectations.  I just watch each game, and enjoy it for what it is.

Sucks we lost ths one (and definitely disappointing), but it was fun none the less.

It should be the other way around if somebody had to be scared of somebody. I don't think anyone is scared of anyone tho.

Definitely agree. As a team the Heat are ordinary with one superhuman player. LeBron is the most protected player in the league. The rest on them are a bunch of bozos.

+1000

I think the Celtics are on the right track. Still need to adjust the new pieces, need a bit more D from Bass and Wilcox, and need healthy KG, PP and Jet. Making free throws would be nice, also. But if we have all the above, watch out refs and Heatles, we're going to beat you!

go Celtics!

Refs were in the bag, its on the jumbo-tron tape. No reason to do hand signals and wrist grabs if something isn't up. Wish had access to that tape.

Let's not forget Scott Foster was the official Donaughy had made all the phone calls to within 30 seconds before and after the call to the bookies. Needs to be cleaned up. What I saw tonight was not ok.

I think Pierce cost the game a little with the last shot. Too quick and unnecessary. It was an exciting game but to have 17 and 13 point leads lost like that at home is not the way to get it done.

We are so much better without KG ;)

Of course trade him lol

Such a relief to not have to see him stand in the post and just pound the ball.
I was joking in a forum about who'd be the first to make that comment and almost got my head handed to me.  hope we really can reel off a winning streak with him out

And you can see why...

Without KG it took 43 points from Jeff Green just to give us a fighting chance.

I have little doubt that we would have won this game had KG played.

Jeff Green should be starting for Bass...

This team is Rocky.  You can't expect to win against a team like the Heat.  Like the playoffs last year, just be proud we went the distance.  Especially without our MVP KG and 3rd best player Rajon Rondo.

Watching the replay now on Comcast ... talk about creative officiating ... wow.

And that taunt by Mr. Steroids ... what a jerk.

LeBron truly makes me nauseous with the way he controls the refs ... it's clear who's in charge on the floor.

Of course we can expect to beat them ... we would have done so easily with KG, or even with balanced officiating, (26 fouls to Miami's 18?), or fewer turnovers, (20) ... we would've won the series last year with balanced officiating, and can clearly beat this team when we play our game, and without so much LBJ bias. If we play our best ball in a fairly officiated game, we can beat anyone, (with our full compliment of players). With KG tonight it would'be been a Celtics blowout.

Yeah I'm not one to complain about officiating, but I'm Lebron games can be truly unwatchable with how they call them....the refs changed the momentum and just plain stunk

I don't buy that. Especially the EASY part. We'll have KG in the playoffs so no excuses when/if we meet the heat there.

I'm a closet heat fan because I don't blindly say nonsense  in support of the C's? Like the heat are SCARED of the celtics? Or, that dunk on jason terry was nothing? Or we would have easily beaten the heat if blah blah? I speak the truth and homers can't stand that. That's your problem.
