You're confusing the pre-season auction (what we're doing now) with the Free Agent Auction (FAAB) during the season.  The FAAB system keeps cut guys at their established salaries for the duration of the season regardless of the amount bid for them.  Free agents who are previously unsigned are defaulted at $5/2 year contracts.

Right, but I'm not talking about mid-season drops, I'm talking about the players who aren't designated "keepers" after the season. 

So if Tim drops LeBron at the end of the year, does anyone who wants LeBron have to pay $80, or is his salary wiped and he's reauctioned from scratch before the '11-12 season?  Tim is saying the first, but I thought it was the second.

Once the season is over anyone is not "kept" as a keeper becomes available to the highest bidder in the preseason auction.  The old salary gets tossed.  We are not held to the contract for its duration.  The years on the contract are more of an "option to retain players services" than a true binding contract.
