Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/CLeeBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/lala/KobeMVP.jpg)
Courtney Lee vs Kobe Bryant
Kobe has had some problems with his elbow, but that won't stop him from playing and from putting up big numbers.  Against the Nets on Tuesday, Kobe finished with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.  He had to shoot 24 shots though to get 21 points.  One thing is for certain,  Kobe will keep shooting, whether he is hitting or not.  CLee has to harass him enough to make him miss more than he makes.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/PierceBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/lala/ArtestLA.jpg)
Paul Pierce  vs  Ron Artest
Artest isn't the defender he used to be but still can play decent defense when the mood hits him.  He has, however resorted to dirty plays more and more.  He missed the last game vs the Nets because he was suspended for grabbing Brandon Knight around the neck and hitting him in the jaw.  The Captain has been playing very well and hopefully he can continue to play well and get into Artest's head (which can be a very scary place) and get the best of this matchup. (For the record, I refuse to call him World Peace because that is simply ridiculous given his violent nature.)

Honorable Mention
Avery Bradley vs Steve Nash
Steve Nash can score  and can set up his teammates, but he has never been known for his speed or his defense.  With Avery's speed, he should be able to beat Nash and get to the hoop.  He should also be able to keep Nash from putting up big numbers.

Game Notes
The Lakers make their only trip to Boston as these two rivals both teams are boasting  winning streaks in spite of struggling with injuries to key players.   When the schedule comes out, there are certain games that players and fans look for and circle.  Lakers games are the first I look for always.    There is no question that this is a rivalry.  There is no love lost between these two franchises or their fans.

Last season, when both teams were fairing somewhat better, the Lakers won the series 2-0.  Both games were close with the Lakers winning 88-87 in overtime in Boston and 97-94 in LA.   This is their first meeting this season and the Celtics will pay a visit to the Staples Center later this month on February 20.

Dwight Howard has been in and out with a shoulder injury.  He missed the game on Tuesday in New Jersey and is listed as day to day for this game.  After the Nets game, Kobe called Howard out and told him to suck it up and play.  Robert Sacre is listed as the starting center so it appears that Dwight won't be following Kobe's suggestion.   Pau Gasol, who started at center on Tuesday, left the game in the 4th quarter with a torn plantar fascia and will be out for this game.  If Dwight ignores Kobe's challenge to suck it up and sits this one out, I expect Robert Sacre to start at center.    Kobe has also had some problems with an elbow injury but has been playing through it.

The Celtics have also been struggling to overcome injuries and so far have done an exceptional job of it by winning their last 5 in a row without Rajon Rondo and the last 4 without Jared Sullinger.   Every player has stepped up in each of those games and hopefully they will continue to do so in this one.

The Celtics are playing in back to back games and had to travel from Toronto and so could be tired.  The Lakers had a day of rest going into this game.  I'm pretty certain that this wasn't a coincidence.   The Celtics are 5-5 in their last 10 games and 17-9 at home.  The Lakers ar 6-4 in their last 10 and 8-16 on the road.  The Celtics are riding a 5 game win streak while the Lakers have won their last 3.

Some of the luster may have come off of this rivalry with both teams struggling, but it is still Lakers vs Celtics, and it is still one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports.  There shouldn't be any lack of motivation in this game for either team.  When these two teams meet up, there's just one thing to say, and that is Beat LA!!!

Keys to the Game
Defense -  Defense is the key to winning this game and to winning Banner 18.   The Celtics have been winning with their defense and they need to continue that tough lock down defense, especially in this game if they want to get the win.   They have to defend both the perimeter and the paint as the Lakers are capable of hitting the long ball as well as getting to the hoop to score.

Rebound
- Rebounding is also key to winning.  The Celtics miss Sully's presence on the boards, but they have been rebounding as a team and that has helped.  They need to crash the boards and aggressively go after every rebound to prevent second chance points and easy put backs along with fast break points for the Lakers.

Effort and Focus - There should be no lack of motivation for this game.  Although many of the players on both sides are new to this rivalry, many have a sense of the history between these two clubs.  There is no excuse for anything less than full out effort and focus in this game.  The Celtics must be the more aggressive team in every area of this game.

Push the Ball - The Celtics have found success in pushing the ball up the court quickly before the defense can get set.  They need to continue to do this and to advance the ball with the pass rather than walking it up.  Ball movement will be key.

X-Factors
Home Court and the Officials
The Celtics have the home crowd behind them and they need to let that give them a boost in this game.  We know that the officials can make a difference in a game (see 2010 Finals Game 7) and hopefully in this game the officials will let them play and not try to influence the outcome.

It sounds like Dwight Howard is expected to miss this game.

I think the Lakers are dead in the water without one of Dwight Howard or Pau Gasol. The Lakers will have to play Robert Sacre instead. Sacre has been fairly awful whenever I have seen him play. I have yet to see any NBA level skills outside of physical size. Great opportunity for Kevin Garnett to have a dominant performance and lead Boston to victory.

It will also mean that LA will rely a lot on undersized front-lines that require Jeff Green to spend a lot of time at power forward. So a good opportunity for Green too to get some playing time. A 30+ minute night perhaps.

yep.......I kinda feel that way too.........most LA vs Boston games  are  bar fights. .

All that needs to happen is fans put  Celtics jerseys and Lakers purple/gold and its going to be all out war , no matter who is wearing the uniforms

I expect  technicals, ejections and fights......  standard affair for this match

both records aren't pretty but the game will be a war.....

I'm excited to be in the building tonight.  Don't even care if they are short handed even more than we are, would love to see them crushed.  But lets not get ahead of ourselves.

This game has TRAP written all over it.  Hope I'm wrong...

If a Celtics team could ever go into a Lakers game and have it be a "trap game" situation, then that is a hopeless Celtics team.

And I don't think this is one.  Sure, we could lose, but I don't possibly see how this could be a trap game with KG and Pierce out there on the floor.

Their "big man" rotation is going to be Jamison, Artest, and Sacre.

Boston should be to handle LA if Bass/KG/Green can give us good minutes against that.

I do worry about Pierce, ugly shot last night and a back to back.

Classic match-up.  Fakirs on the ropes but any team with the Black Mamba is defacto dangerous.  The match-ups look good the Cs on paper, but don't coast. Execute. Keep the streak alive. Bring it one home.

Other than DH pushing KG and Collins around like rag dolls, it wasn't a bad 1st quarter.  I like PP's energy.  His shot seems to have its legs tonight.

I think JGreen needs to play a lot of minutes tonight and exploit some matchup problems the lakers will have with him.

lakers are bad.

Remember how the Heat formed and it worked out? The 2013 lakers is like the Heats project gone wrong. Too many stars and bad bench due to no money.

Lakers imo have to get rid/waive gasol to get younger and save the cap a little.

Otherwise i say blow it up and trade howard and/or Kobe to get many better pieces instead of being a few great pieces

Awful shot by Earl Clark. No idea what Nash was thinking giving Clark the ball at the top of the key like that when nothing was on. Can't trust Clark to make good decisions in that situation.

Very good defense by Barbosa to deny the lane on Nash's dribble drive earlier in the possession. Helped force that ball out of Nash's hands.

They can only use Jamison against Bass and Wilcox.

Lakers have looked really bad defensively and on the boards. Rare moments of individual quality offensively but mostly a lack of team cohesion.

They used to lose games shooting under 40%.  They were taking some makeable shots.  Jet was going 0-12 and 1-11 from the field.  Green hit a rut for a while and was shooting bad.  Their defense was always solid, they just weren't scoring.

Reduce the schedule to 58 games a year instead of 82 and there would be a huge improvement both in terms of intensity from players + preparedness and execution.

The NBA really shooting itself in the foot by keeping this 82 game season around. Too long. Too many games. Not enough rest between games. Not enough practice sessions for coaching staffs to impact team.

Man, Kobe has hit some ridiculous shots.

He doesn't make those really well defended shots and we're up by 20+.  I mean not that it's not his fault for ball hogging, but if he had bricked those we would be up so much right now.

Bass has clearly fallen out of favor with the coaches.  I know it's popular to hate him for underachieving, but he still has the ability to be a quality roleplayer for us and being a 12 PPG 6 RPG guy.

I don't know how, but whenever I check out the box score, Terry is leading the team in +/-.  Green seems to always be second as well more often than not.  Good signs.

Our lack of three point shooting is going to be our downfall.

What a spectacular series of events.  Green with the dunk and sprints all the way back for the block.  THAT is championship basketball and effort.  The Jeff Green we were all hoping for.  What a spectacular series for him.  Wow.

Also I know it's the Lakers defense (or lack there of) but remember when it was a miracle for us to score 30 points in a quarter?  Crazy how Rondo doesn't walk the ball up the court every possession, and hold the ball for 20 seconds every shot clock, and all of a sudden our offense isn't self handicapped and has gone berserk lately.

Crazy how Rondo doesn't walk the ball up the court every possession, and hold the ball for 20 seconds every shot clock, and all of a sudden our offense isn't self handicapped and has gone berserk lately.

rondo is probably history next year. probably be traded especially if we make a run this year.

Best win of the year in my opinion.  No matter what's going on in the league at the moment, the Celtics-Lakers matchups are always the biggest of the year to me.  It means a lot that they handled this one the way they did.

Great effort by Boston tonight.

The people knocking Melo obviously don't remember how Bradley looked.

A project rookie's first few appearances in garbage time mean absolutely nothing.

I don't think anybody is saying it means something. They are just saying he looks terrible, which he does.

Great win by the Celtics. Rondo Who? Jeff Green is officially a poorman's LBJ and our role players are definitely getting more confidence in B-Ball w/out Ron-dork. BTW, I rather have our team having success then obsessing on one hard headed player.

Denver/Bulls are the only two decent defensive teams for till March 1st. After that the schedule will test our offense a lot more.

Also post-allstar game road trip will also be a good test. Still shocking to me how poorly the Lakers played.

Reminds me of 2007, rationalizations by people to try and discredit what the Celtics are doing. It's quite curious isn't it, that when our team is playing good defense, suddenly everyone the team plays coincidentally plays poorly against us.

I'm not sure what the call out is for.

The C's are a very good defensive team, but the Lakers are also a good offensive team. And the Lakers got us in foul trouble quickly, but then they just showed no effort, hustle, or ball movement at all after the opening stages of the game.

I think that's just a consequence of what good defensive teams do to their opponents. The observations you're making are going to be a constant through a great percentage of games, particularly when our team is playing good defense.

I just find it reminiscent of 2007, that while everyone agreed that they were a good team, there was always a "but" that followed that proclamation. They're not playing that top teams, their opponents just had a bad shooting night, etc., etc.

There was always a "the real test comes next", and when that test was passed, a new "real test" came.

I'm really enjoying watching Kobe's tone toward Howard getting more and more scathing as the losses pile up.  After the season he gave Orlando last year, it's been fun to see Kobe repeatedly call him out.

Man it is too bad that you're not *sippin*.

*sippin* is so much fun after the Celtics beat the Lakers. I'm sure Paul Pierce is *sippin*. So is KG; he is *sippin*.

Heck, even Craig Sager is *sippin*.

Fab Melo to KG after Garnett reached 25K points: "I told him, 'I have 24,998 to go.' Hopefully I'll get there."

Great win.  Team looked terrific out there.

But the Lakers also looked listless and like they didn't want to be there (except for Kobe).  Really enjoying the ongoing implosion.
I want the Suns to get a top 3 pick with the Laker's ping pong balls sooooo badly.

I'm really enjoying watching Kobe's tone toward Howard getting more and more scathing as the losses pile up.  After the season he gave Orlando last year, it's been fun to see Kobe repeatedly call him out.

we knew Kobe wouldn't like Dwight's happy go lucky attitude before he went there.........it will get worse.......as the Kobe era....slowly dies away.........

I agree with Sir Charles.......Kobe is a moron for pushing a player with Howard's injuries into playing

they will fight before its all over........eventually Howard will hear enough and go off onKobe

3rd quarter was the most fun I've had watching the Celtics in ages.  Good to see the Freedom Offense sticking.  Good to see Jeff Green playing well.  I always knew he was the 4th best player on the team.  Now with Rondo out, he's our 3rd best.

That is seriously an amazing quote. I love it.

By the way anyone hear KG talking about the Denver trade and how if its up to him hes retiring in green? It is up to him so sounds like hes going nowhere

And as usual KG extremely entertaining talking to reporters. I could watch an endless reel of his interviews, pressers, quotes etc

AND they will probably lose Gasol thanks to their great coach.

Amazing win tonight The Truth lit up Artest. It doesn't get any better than taking the Lakers to the back of the wood shed and giving it to 'em....putting them further on out the playoff picture. Them C's are back baby we will be a tough out.

TPs all around
