Free agent F/C Wenyen Gabriel is finalizing a deal with the Boston Celtics, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Gabriel, who averaged 5.5 PPG and 4.2 RPG for Lakers last season, will compete for a reserve big man spot in Boston.

He was a solid 15 mpg bench big for the Lakers last year. Decent enough depth piece.

He was pretty good for the Sudan in FIBA. Got them an Olympic spot.

Young big. Good energy. Has a bit upside left. Solid.

Not better than Kornet in my opinion.  He's a warm body to throw out there in case of injuries but he's pretty much replacement level.

A traffic cone is better than Kornet.

How many open roster spots does Boston have?

We would have one left after this signing. We have very little space before we get over the 2nd apron though, prior to this, if you subtract out the cap holds for Blake and Kabengele which was $3.8m, we could spend $1.3m before exceeding the 2nd apron. So whether we fill out that 15th spot depends on how much we paid this guy.

Personally I think Brad will leave that 15th spot open and fill it during the season depending on injuries/needs.
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

He was part of a very good defensive rotation for the Lakers last year. He will be part of our rotation this year and may even need to start some on rest nights for Horford and/or Zinger.

Solid move by Stevens, again.

15 Banton

To me this will be the opening night roster. I would like to see Banton let go and them sign Bullock.

Seems like a cheap, solid depth move. Lakers fans liked him. High motor, lengthy guy. Sounds like someone fans will get behind based off the commentary I’ve seen from Lakers fans.

Gabriel has got a good motor, and he can hit the occasional 3 ball.
I really like this signing.

Why did the lakers let him go?  He played well for them last year.
I don't get it.

I don’t know anything about him. I do try to avoid watching Lakers. Looks like Cs will be his 7th team in his short career.

Glad to hear the praise he’s getting here.

Gabriel isn't a starting PF/C but really? "He's not better than Kornet??" ???

The Kornet love around here is honestly a bit weird. He's okay as a 4th/5th C in regular season eating up minutes. That's literally it. Gabriel actually gave LAL legit minutes off the bench in the regular season and has way more upside and energy. Low-risk, medium reward
