Title: Urban Meyer on administrative leave (set to retire after Rose Bowl)
Post by: Moranis on August 01, 2018, 08:21:26 PM
Rumors have been swirling all day that he might be out and the school has officially put him on administrative leave. Very good chance he will be fired which would be a shocking end to his highly successful stint at Ohio State.

Definitely would not consider it shocking nowadays with all the other scandals that have occurred.  Meyer does not have a particularly pristine reputation.

Penn State. Michigan State. Now Ohio State.

What is up with these Big Ten schools?

Ryan Day.  Former BC assistant coach.  Nice to see him get a shot as an interim head coach.

Baylor, FSU, Florida (this all started in Florida with the same people), NE (Lawrence Phillips), etc.

I think its pretty clearly a CFB thing. More broadly I think this is a societal thing given what various corporations, churchs, and other organizations are having been revealed to have allowed.

I hope they have the guts to follow through and fire him if they cannot find that the reporting is false.

Baylor.  Colorado.  Miami (the Shapiro scandal).  Louisville (basketball).

Not to mention all the pay scandals that constantly plague the top programs.

Haha...you Big Ten guys so quick to rush to defend your league.  Relax, I was simply pointing out some of the more prominent scandals of the past few years have arisen from Big Ten schools.

I'm well aware that its well above the Big Ten and we have seen plenty of scandals from other conferences.  Clearly, there is a systematic problem when it comes to situations like this in college sports where a blind eye is turned in the name of sports.

I'm still a Big 8 guy.  :(

Still not happy with how it all shook out.

The big 8 was awesome.  It seemed more fun with Colo Neb and Miss before the switch.

Ha...I feel you.  BC was Big East when I was there.  An independent when I was a kid & is ACC now.

All over the board.  :P

Rumors of a possible replacement include Matt Campbell, Bob Stoops, and Bo Pelini.  If they go with Pelini they might as well throw away the next few seasons.  I'd love to see Stoops take over.  Not sold that Campbell is ready for that type of job, but at least I'd understand the idea of going for a young up and comer.

apparently Ohio State has the longest executive session ever.  Went in at like 9 am and still no resolution.  Reportedly the Board doesn't want to do anything but OSU's president wants a suspension of some kind and that is the hold up.

OSU findings: Meyer's first reaction to learning of Brett McMurphy's report from ops director Brian Voltolini was to adjust settings on cell phone so texts older than a year would be deleted (FOIA requests). Investigators called response "concerning" but found no cover-up.

In contrast, UNC athletes were given 4 games for selling their shoes.

NCAA violations vs. nothing to do with NCAA.  Remember Ohio State fired Jim Tressel when he covered up his players selling merchandise to get tattoos.

Don't forget. The NCAA says Mich St broke no rules during the whole Larry Nassar thing.

What exactly do you think Meyer did that deserved more than 3 games?

Can't we just destroy his whole family for reporting the incident within 72 hours after a solid witch hunt trial by media? Oh. Wait. His last name isn't Paterno.
I'm honestly fine with 3 games.

Meyer came off as a jackas* on TV after multiple reports of domestic abuse.

I don't think I'm alone when I say that men who hurt women, children, and even animals (I'm thinking pets here) are bad guys.

It's more about what Meyer didn't do. This guy Smith should have been gone long ago.

I'm not 100% on what rules were broken. I do know that Meyer looks ugly for defending a wife beater. It sucks because he could have hired 99 great guys and this dude Smith, but all we know about is the failure.

In the end, Meyer makes the big money, so the responsibility should land in his hands, though I don't care about fining games. That 9/15 game against #16 should be a good test without the great coach.

ALLEGED wife beater.  He maintains his innocence, was never even charged after police investigations, her own mother has publically said she doesn't believe the allegations and that her daughter vowed to ruin her now ex-husband, etc.  Sometimes the husband isn't in fact the violent one in a relationship.  Sometimes he is, but that is what the police and court system is for.

I think Meyer should have fired him as well, and he had plenty of grounds totally unrelated to his relationship with his wife (rehab, coming late during his divorce, etc.), but I don't think you can just say he defended a wife beater as that is far from proven and may in fact not be the case at all.

3 games seems about right to me given the totality of the situation.

I have 2 very good friends in the sports information department's of D1 college programs. One was at Maryland for a long time and knew all the coaches and trainers that were involved in their football related death earlier this year. Another friend is at a Big Ten school and has known Meyer for quite some time.

They both say 90% of the coaches in D1 college athletics are dirty and complete Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.s or they don't win. My friend from Maryland took a job at a small D1 school out in California that doesn't have a football program to get away from it.

Pretty sad state of affairs.

Urban set to retire after the Rose Bowl.  Jason Day will take over making for a seamless transition much like OU with going from Stoops to Riley.
