Draft Day!!!!!!

Big board/discussion thread is now open.  I'll try to update the picks as they come but, with the expectation of heavy blog traffic, it'll probably won't be anywhere near real time.  Especially near the time of Celtics' picks.

Also, in the meantime, feel free to glance at past draft threads of CB lore & see how wrong you & others were.

Does the actual draft being at 7?  Or is there an hour of pre-draft coverage with the first pick going on the clock at 8:00?

Came home around 4 PM ET, layed in bed and took an unexpected 2 hour nap.

Woke up and had a mini panic attack wondering if some trade had went down while I slept  :P

Looks like it's been "peaceful" though.

I'm ready for all the Woj Bombs, connection problems here, rumors, etc the next 3 hours  8)

(I'm honestly not)

That's why I gave up on real time updating years ago. The first couple of years, it worked well and picks were announced in the thread.  That ended around 2010.

The Celtics have backed off in regards to trade talk with the Knicks about Porzingis.

Per @WojVerticalNBA

Adam Kaufman and others are saying the same.

Apparently the Knicks asking price is similar to that of Anthony Davis. LOL PASS.

Can't believe I fell for all the talk again. I was really hoping for a significant move, either for an established star or an up and coming youngster like Porzingis. I should know better by now.

At this point, I'd rather just have Fultz. Yeah, that LA pick might get us another asset, but Tatum just doesn't have the appeal of someone like Fultz.

At the very least, if we're wanting Tatum hopefully we take Jackson and make a trade-down with Phoenix or Sacramento for some more assets, hopefully someone like Skal or one of those Miami picks.

That would make the whole draft process a little more palatable for me.

Think Jackson and Brown will be their best at the 2 this year and that move could get us a decent big prospect along with the cap space to go after Hayward.

Got some liquor for good times and a joint already rolled encase I need a timeout when I see something terrible!
Mini fridge full of beer in the man-cave. Just ran out of hooch though, enjoy!

Negotiating with my 8-year old what time he has to go to sleep. Whoo-hoo!

Who else is ready for the major traffic jam in this thread and five minute loading times?!

oh im ready for the Dennis Smith pick

and the ensuing Summer long .....mkae that next 10 years of hating on Danny ....LOL

Dennis Smith has all the tools to be one of the  top picks in this draft. Don't hate the playas, hate the game!

I never watched him play, but I've heard a number of knowledgeable people, not the majority, say that he was the best prospect.  That was all early to mid season of the college season.

So we offered #3, Brown or Smart, and an undisclosed additional first for Porzingis, but they wanted more.

I still think the 3, 7, and player package is better than that reported offer.

Me too. I think Phil cooled down after the media backlash.

The fallacy is always to believe that what a team asks of you is equal to that of what they would've asked another team.

Wolves reportedly close to acquiring Butler- Stein

You're kidding me.

It's done. He's headed to Minny.

Lavine, Dunn, 7.
Great deal for Minn.  Chicago blew it.

What was the trade?

#7, Dunn, LaVine FOR Butler + #16
great deal for Minny.  happy for them finally getting the better of a deal like that.

did Danny not get him due to Chicago overcharging him?  would seem to be a deal he could have beat.  Dunn didn't do anything and Lavine is an ok player.  I would think we could have gotten him for #3 and Crowder based on equitable value

Think a couple years from now if we get Hayward and Tatum and Brown have begun getting accustomed to the league.  Hayward, Brown, and Tatum could be on the floor at the same time at 2, 3, and 4.  Three guys ranging from 6'7" to 6'9" who are athletic, can shoot the 3, can create offense, pass, drive, and finish.  Fun to watch!

Ya I mean I would be surprised if we included the 3rd pick, that's a lot for a rental. Also we'd have to make salaries match or close to maintain max room. That means Bradley and Crowder are both likely gone in a deal, since they are the two highest paid players reasonably available.

I hope we don't give up too much. If we did, let's hope there's assurance of a signing an extension.

Although, if we get PG, that would make it attractive for us to sign Blake Griffin, and that could make it attractive for PG to stay.

Crowder, yes.  Bradley, only b/c Jaylen should move to the 2.

I like the Isaac pick for Orlando. Best all-round prospect available.

I thought Orlando would blow it and pick the best scorer (monk) because of how desperate their front office has been to add scoring. Good for them (front office) to not panic and make the best long term decision.

They must feel awful. Who will the Bulls select? Dennis Smith Jr. or Malik Monk?
Lot of pressure for the guy selected to make an immediate impact.

Sounds like this has been AInge's guy all along.

Do people feel a bit better about the Philly trade now? If he was going to take Tatum all along, I'm glad we got the Lakers pick in addition to him.

No, I only feel worse about Ainge.

The question is, will he be Kelly Olynyk, or JR Giddens?

Neither.  Pierce.

G

I would be stunned (regardless of what the C's send) if Danny gets PG without assurance of a long-term commitment.  I think it would be throwing away assets which I don't think Danny will do.

I hope we don't give up too much. If we did, let's hope there's assurance of a signing an extension.

Although, if we get PG, that would make it attractive for us to sign Blake Griffin, and that could make it attractive for PG to stay.

I would think BG would be much less likely to sign here if PG didn't assure that he would stay.  One year rental is unacceptable to me since it will be impossible to get PG without giving up some valuable assets.

Tatum is remarkably poised for a 19 year old.

Loads of shooting, quickness and athleticism. Dwight to control the paint.

MKG off the bench as an energy guy. Zeller. Kaminsky. Sessions. Depth.

At 12 Detroit a SG (Caldwell-Pope may be too expensive)
At 13 Utah a SG (need improvement in back court)
At 14 Miami a PF/C (need big man)
At 15 Sacramento a SF (replacement for Gay)

A LOT of draft picks say that. Very few of them ever accomplish it.

Nah, it's some nice talent for the long run, but very raw.  If the pick were 2021, or even 2020, I might worry.  But assuming they commit to developing these guys, instead of making a chaotic trade for a not-good-enough vet, 2019 should be a very, very good pick.

What if Sacramento is bad next year but shows promise and they get a top pick in the 2018 draft: Could they convince an impact free agent to sign up to play with a bunch of young talent next summer?

That's what I worry about. Even if it's only good enough to get the pick out of the top ten, that would suck.

No, I think Sacramento needs to show a couple years of steadiness before a free-agent difference-make will even consider there.  No one who's gone there voluntarily has liked it.

Gotham also said that Tatum has been at the top of their board for a long time.

I think it's pretty clear at this point that they truly do have Tatum right at the level of Fultz in their book, and he's been their target all along. With Danny refusing to trade the 3 even for Butler, or even probably George, all signs point to them being honest in their Tatum love.

Hopefully they're on to something and we actually picked up another nice asset in addition to our targeted player.

Bell is an Ainge type player, I really want him. But expect it to be a draft and stash

Who's a worthwhile draft and stash pick that is still out there?
I dont know, but if they are trying to keep the cap as low as possible, it makes sense

Maybe Jonah Bolden. He looks like a Stevens pick.

That would be awesome.  :)

So with pick #37, could we choose someone who fills out our HOLES at PF/C?

Horford, Zizic, MAYBE Jerebko w/room exception... then no one else really if we sign a max FA (since all of Zeller/Olynyk/Mickey/Amir leave)..

I cannot believe Semi was there at 37... Ugh, one of my favorite players in the entire draft. We are STACKED with wing players. Jae Crowder must be gone. I'd venture they are more likely to go after Blake now? Hayward is redundant with Brown, Tatum and Semi. Semi is not a stash kind of guy.

Because he is kind of like crowder.... Bulky. Lacks a way to separate from defenders at times.  6'10 wingspan is not the best vs height.   Not a great rebounder , nor passer. But good at boxing out

He is really like a carbon copy of Jae...but at 6'7 with more explosiveness....  He will fit in nicely

Actually Ojeleye is a really good get in this range.  Draftexpress had him going at #22 in their mock.

Danny has a knack for finding useful players in round 2.

Ojeleye is an undersized power forward but he is very strong and he can step out and make the deep 3 or the pick and pop shot with efficiency.

I like this draft selection.  He's basically an insurance policy if Yabu doesn't pan out.

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Semi-Ojeleye-7164/

So the Celtics have incoming:
Tatum scoring SF.  Already have Jaylen but I think he slides over to SG now.
Ojeleye PF.  Already have Yabu but not sure if he's ready to come over yet.
C.  Already have Zizic who said he is definitely coming over for this year.

Don't know what we do with Nader.

Ojeleye was awesome in his first season since transferring from Duke. He has the NBA body and power, as well as a sweet shooting stroke. He's the type of player who looks as though he could make an impact right away. But his age (22), tweener status and poor defensive metrics make scouts pause. - Chad Ford

Kadeem allen is the selection

Odd pick. Old, not all that productive. I know nothing else about him.

He was the leader of that Zona team that had a lot of young (Markkanen, Adkins, Simmons) and immature(Trier) players.

Real mature, glue guy....wasted pick?....Peters was there and Goss and Motley...weird with Demetrius J on roster

Yeah, at picks 53 and 56, I assume we'd draft for either size or upside. Instead, we got guys who are probably summer league depth.

So, Terry Rozier is gone with the Kareem Allen pick? ;-)

Kadeem Allen is gone with the Kadeem Allen pick :)

our 1st couple of picks were great.  I don't know about this one.  Are picks like this made because we owed some agent a favor or something?  Motley would have at least been a solid pick.  He was a good player in the big12

They probably think he'll be a positive force as a glue guy in summer league and in the G League. What's more important, allowing Jaylen and Jayson to develop as best as possible or taking a flier on someone who's not making the team?

The "better player" might be more concerned with shining himself rather than fitting in. It's the 53rd pick. Simply picking a character guy who won't interfere in the development of important pieces (include guys like Semi and DJax in Maine) is important.

I expect both picks #53 and #56 pre-agreed to go to Maine and/or sign 2-way contracts.  Not every player is willing to do that, so they may have had a slightly different pool of players to choose from.

I buy that. I would believe that he had Tatum as a close second to Fultz, which allowed him to justify the trade, but I find it so impossibly hard to buy into the idea that he would have passed on Fultz at #1.

There's also the reality that it is impossible to look at tape of every one of the thousands playing D1 NCAA or big time Euro ball.  I would guess that once you get into the 40s in the second round, teams are relying a lot on recommendations from friends, associates, ex-coaches, etc.  Or you take a flier on some guy who caught the GMs eye while he was flipping through games some random off day.

I guess that this is too late, but prior to us trading the first pick, I was hoping for this (and am already laughing at how wrong I was in regards to the draft position of most of these guys, if they were even drafted at all, lol ;D/):

Trade #1 – move the first overall selection to the Kings for Sacramento’s picks at 5, 10, and 34.

Trade #2 – send Al Horford to Minnesota for the contract of Nikola “Not Tesla” Pekovic, Jordan Hill, who is then waived before his deal becomes guaranteed, and the 7th pick.

Trade #3 – move the recently acquired 7th selection to the Blazers for Portland’s picks at 15 and 20.

Trade #4 – with the Reggie Jackson experiment having become an abject failure, and if the reports about the Pistons looking to move the 12th pick for an established veteran, are true, who better to lead them than Isaiah Thomas, especially with Detroit moving to a new arena?

Trade #5 – move Avery Bradley to the Thunder for the 21st pick.  He’d be a great fit on both ends of the floor next to Westbrook, in my view, and enables them to have a much better guard rotation, I would think, of Westbrook and Bradley starting with Oladipo coming off the bench.

Trade #6 – if Terry Rozier really was the sticking point in the proposed Ibaka trade at the deadline, surely he can fetch Orlando’s picks at 33 and 35, even with the Magic being under new management, right?  I’d like to think that that transaction could get done fairly easily, even though, again, I’m probably wrong.

Trade #7 – if reports were true about how Philadelphia was looking to move their second rounders with their primary weakness, injuries notwithstanding, being defense from the guard positions, who better to provide that than Marcus Smart and, to a lesser extent, Jae Crowder (for 36 and 39, btw)?

5.  Jonathan Isaac.

10.  Justin Patton.

12.  Dwayne Bacon.

15.  Jawun Evans.

20.  Semi Ojeleye.

21.  Wesley Iwundu.

33.  Nigel Hayes.

34.  Deonte Burton.

Did we just draft a bigger Jae Crowder? Nice!

Yep, Jae Crowder is exactly what I thought.  I really like this pick (for a player I learned existed yesterday!)

...so what's the catch?  6'7" great athletes who can shoot and defend don't last until the second round.

Honestly asking because I didn't study this far down the draft board.  Why is he still available?

Because he is kind of like crowder.... Bulky. Lacks a way to separate from defenders at times.  6'10 wingspan is not the best vs height.   Not a great rebounder , nor passer. But good at boxing out

He is really like a carbon copy of Jae...but at 6'7 with more explosiveness....  He will fit in nicely

Guys, I hate to rain on your parade, here, but Semi Ojeleye IS NOTHING LIKE JAE CROWDER.  Not even close, imo.
