I had a daylong layover there.  Pleasant but non-descript German city.  Safe.

I know it's not what you asked, but I've been to Munich a couple times--the most unbelievable airport in the world, and very cool old world towns surrounding it accessible by train direct from the airport.

I have only been to Frankfurt on short layovers, but if it's anything like Munich you can't go wrong. Why are you going? Vacay? Biz?

I've been there a few times. Nice city for a day or two but Germany has MUCH more to offer elsewhere. If you're there for a few hours, check out the "Old Town". Pretty nice spot! Trenched in Hitler History.

Try Nuremberg. Few hours train but just a delightful place to be.

Frankfurt is an awesome city, but if you go there, you must drive south to Freiburg and Utzenfeld, and spend time in the Black Forest area ... just incredible sights and amazing people, IMHO the best part of Germany, (and Das Autobahn, of course! ;)).

I'm afraid Frankfurt is not nearly as interesting as Munich. It's a very bland city. Almost sterile. Very poor for tourism. You need to explore the surrounding areas because there's very little to see or do in Frankfurt (except work meetings). Not much of a night-life either, everybody lives in the suburbs. The upside is that it's a very cosmopolitan city, locals are very welcoming towards strangers, much friendlier than in Munich. There's a nice cycling spot by the river. Some office buildings are really hightech. Things like that.

Pig knuckle is nice, but I'm not sure if it's a Frankfurt's speciality. I don't think it is, more typical of Bavaria, Munich.

Frankfurt has a rep as the most "american" city in Germany. It´s the finance headquarter of Germany, but also the city with the highest crime rate, it depends on where exactly you want to spend your time. You should be safe in the inner city districts, but I wouldn´t suggest the surrounding suburbs. It´s in the state of Hesse, which is famous for their "Eppelwoi" (Applewine). There aren´t many culinary specialties I could suggest, aside from the typical sausages.

To be honest, Frankfurt wouldn´t be my first choice as a tourist, it´s a rather ordinary city. If you´ve got some time to spend, I suggest you visit some of the more rural areas of Hesse, as the landscape is quite beautiful there.
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

Frankfurt has no sights whatsoever. Very boring and average city. You should go to Berlin!

I was over there on work in December last year. If you can, go to Berlin! Its a city with real character - museums are great, people are friendly and very cosmopolitan. All sorts there - cool art vibe. Loved the contrast between the old east and west.

Hamburg is very cool as well. Ignore the Reeperbahn - it's just a giant tourist trap.

My Hessian mate said to me that Frankfurt is a "bankers" city. Bland and boring. (sorry to any of you who are bankers...) :)

If you're going there for vacation, I suggest taking a day to visit Luxembourg. It's just about small enough for a day trip.

Also, Trier, which is on the way, has a pretty interesting cathedral, and some souvenir shopping opportunities. It has an old Roman fortress (Porta Nigra). Good for a leisurely stroll.

Trier is also the birthplace of Karl Marx, so they turned his house into a nice museum. Pretty curious sight.

I had an AWESOME time there.

Granted I was there for the world cup for a week and there were parties everywhere in the streets with beer stand after beer stand
