A thread for general discussion/news pertaining to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

I personally love the Olympics ... the opening ceremonies were absolutely amazing! Steve Nash and Wayne Gretzky carried the torch in it's last legs and helped light the cauldron, which rose in separate columns of "ice" from the floor of the main arena ... pretty cool to watch. Such a shame that these games had to begin under the veil of such tragedy ... I pray they end in a better fashion. GO USA!!
-
I am american, and have no bias towards anyone in the Olympics, but, so far not so good for Vancouver. The death of this young athlete is a TRAGEDY and they are saying it's not their fault. I understand they have to say that, but people are wiping out left and right over there, it's ridiculous. No padding on the metal poles at the end of the fastest luge track? Why not? If it's not their fault, why pad the poles and raise the ice now? You just said it's not your fault but you're going to make changes?

I thought it was pretty riduculous that they didn't have padding on those metal poles.
I watched the horrific video of the accident and it seems like if the track is running that fast and the walls arent that high, that its just a no-brainer to have padding on those supports.

I just don't get why they would say "It's not the tracks fault" and then go out and raise the wall and pad the beams (which should have been done anyway). It is absolutely tragic, words can't express how awful it is.
How did you find the video?
-
I'm amazed with the speed-skating short-track relays ... it's complete chaos on ice ... I really have a great amount of admiration for their ability to NOT get completely confused. My favorite event is aerials, then freestyle moguls, as I used to compete in freestyle competition, back following the days of Wayne Wong. One of my old skiing buddies from my town studied with Wayne and is now an "Extreme Skiing" movie producer/director, Greg Stump ... we were crazy back then, pushing the envelope, but what they're doing now on skis is just amazing.
-
Bode Miller gets Bronze in Men's Downhill, with first place and third separated by 0.09/second ... amazing. He began his career at Carrabassett Valley Academy at Sugarloaf ... my old winter haunt. ;)

I don't think they could put enough padding to matter for the speed he was going at.
The impact destroyed his neck/head.
-
I'm Canadian and I think the track is too fast and the poles should have padding. Also didn't like the response from our head Olympic honcho Dick Pound.
Love speed skating too. Looking forward to the hockey.
-
Another "Maine-ah" and Carrabassett Valley Academy alum, Seth Wescott, wins an Olympic Gold Metal in Snow-Board-Cross ... sweet! Sugarloaf has produced so many of the world's dominant athletes in snow sports, and deservedly so. Go USA!
-
I love that the USA is an underdog to Canada and Germany in hockey, but Ryan Miller is going to have to step-it-up big time, especially after losing some of our D right before tournament. Man, I would LOVE to see this team dominate ... and shock the home-team crowd. First up: Switzerland ... we'll see. ;)
-
Finally got to see some curling during my lunch break today. Love that sport. So mesmerizing.
-

Yeah ... US has a young team but they did OK in their opener against a very experienced German team.
-
The US has got to get the puck up off the ice with their SsOG against this Swiss goalie ... always on his knees.
-
Let's see if they can convert on this power play.
-
Only one shot on goal in the power play ... the Swiss are so good at expending time tying up the puck ... great demonstration of their strength there.
-
A couple of great opportunities for both teams ... this is going to be a goalie's duel.
-
There we go!!
-
Saaaawwwweeeeeettttt!! One - Zip, USA!
-
What a great break-away goal ... awesome!! Two - Zip, USA!
-
That goal was a beaut.
-
Swiss getting out-hustled now ... I think the US is wearing them down ... they look tired, and we are in control.
-
With Miller in net for the US, this game is just about over.
-

Yeah ... US is clicking and Miller is money ... I'm loving our chances to get on the podium. Can't wait to see Germany and Canada ... as long as we stay healthy, I'll think we'll surprise some teams who are way too cocky. We're major under-dogs but loaded with quiet talent.
-
I change the channel for 2 minutes and the Swiss score ... ugh!!!
-
Very good win ... started a little slow and rusty, but got into a groove and were in control for most of the game. GO USA!!
-
Getting "swept" up in the Curling competition ... USA is picking up their tempo from yesterday ... I'd love to see them "slide" further up in the standings. ;)
-
Wow ... Shuster chokes again ... on the same shot! And he has dominated the rest of the game, coming from down by 4 to zip to take a 6 - 4 lead, now it's tied going into extra ends. (He might want to think about spelling his name differently, haha). ;)
-
Shaun White is ridiculously talented.
Wow...that halfpipe final was amazing. He already had the gold tied up and still went all out on that final run. That last move was mind-boggling.
He's so far ahead of everyone else, its insane.
-

Absolutely ... the guy is at least 8 to 10 feet higher above the edge of the pipe than anyone else ... and his "Victory Lap" was a higher score, (obviously), than his winning, first run ... unbelievable!
Lindsey Vonn is leading in the Super Combined after the Downhill portion, which is also amazing, considering she already won Gold in the Downhill on her badly injured shin. Girl is tough.
-
Man, when I raced slalom, the poles moved you, not the other way around ... they can ski such a clean line now, no wonder the elapsed times have improved so much over the years ... there's not a lot of turning in slalom anymore.
-
Lindsey fell in the Slalom of the Super Combined ... at least Julia got another medal.
-
Wow ... really thought Gretchen would make it to the podium ... beginner's mistake, too. Still one of the best women snowboarders alive.
-
The same screen comparison of two skiers at the same pace is pretty amazing. It makes it look like a race.
-

Yeah ... I think it's called "ghosting" or something similar ... pretty amazing technology ... here goes Apolo! Guy makes his sport look so easy!
-
Korean short-track skaters always running their mouths ... persecution complex. ;)
-
Wow ... can't believe Davis came in second, after setting a new world record ... huge upset.
-
Really fired up for US-Canada in hockey tonight. Didn't realize that the US hasn't beaten Canada in the Olympics in 50 years. Its about time that changed, isn't it? ;)
Ski-cross today too. I have a definite interest in what this is gonna look like. I loved snowboard-cross.
-
Yup... I love Ski-Cross! Can't wait until its head to head. Right now, its just single man qualifying.

TP for that Donoghus.

I have a signed, framed Jim Craig poster of him after the Gold Medal game with an American flag looking for his dad. He signed it to me with the annotation "Always believe in miracles".
Pretty cool stuff.
-
Wow, US vs Canada hockey game not even available in HD for me? Lame.

They have it on MSNBC and Ice Dancing on NBC. That's ridiculous. Do you have Cox? Because if you do try channel 742.

What a save by Miller!!

I sure wish the Bruins had Ryan Miller as a goalie. No offense to Tim Thomas and Tukka Rask.

-

Indeed. I'd watch a whole lot more hockey if there was more of this sort of play. I guess it's hard to replicate what the Olympics or the Canada Cup mean to these guys.

I want the gold!
-
First time in 50 years!! Prelim round or not, that's BIG!
Canada in general is choking pretty bad throughout their home Olympics.
The U.S. on the other hand ;D
Still, the hockey team has a ways to go,
-
Nice win. Miller was outstanding.
-
Have to put a word in ... while it's certainly understandable that the US Men's Hockey Team is getting so much hype, the US Women's Team is advancing to the Gold Medal match against Canada. This women's team is awesome, and these are definitely the best two teams in the world. I hope more people will get into this sport as a result, and I hope there will be no shortage of accolades for them ... they deserve as much as we can give them. GO USA!!
-
That was very impressive win against Canada. Also because of that win, Canada will have to face Russia in the quarterfinals which also should be a great game. There surely will be a lot of Ovechkin vs Crosby hype.
As a Russia fan, I hope for them to play the US team in the finals.

I've always been on the Ovechkin side of the Ovechkin/Crosby debate. To me, he's a more complete player and a lot more apt to mix it up. I know he may be a little rough around the edges but he's pretty likeable to me.
Not sure who I'd pull for in Russia/Canada. Part of me wants the US-Canada rematch but US-Russia would be a fun one to watch too. Obviously a lot still needs to happen for all those teams before any of it becomes a reality. That's the beauty of single elimination but also the risk.

Don't agree with that at all. To me Crosby is the better team player, passer, and defender, but Ovechkin has him in scoring even though he is catching up to Ovechkin in that as you can see with the leading NHL scores this year.
For who I would like to face, I would love to face the Canadiens in a rematch but I feel it would be an extremely tough game and that Russia would be easier, but I don't care who we beat, I just want the Gold.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to denigrate Crosby by any means. I just like Ovechkin more. He's a pleasure to watch.

No, it is your opinion and it is extremely close between both.
And watching Ovechkin is great. At half-time of C's Nuggets on Sunday I put on the Russia game and how about that Ovechkin hit....
Wow!

Pretty good hockey game going on between Latvia & Czech Republic right now.
Latvia was down 2-0 in the 3rd and has faught back to tie it up. Game is about to head to overtime.
-
Bruins' Krejci with the game-winning goal in OT for Czech Republic.
-

Was really hoping Latvia would pull out the huge upset ... guess it wasn't meant to be. ;)

Yeah, I was kinda pulling for Latvia too.
-
Can't wait for the women's Gold Medal game on Thursday ... US has an awesome team! (Preview of men's Finals?). ;)
-
Bring the Swiss on again!
-
You gotta be kidding me. What great luck.
-
Jonas Hiller is playing unbelievable.
-
Finally we scored and I'm praying that shot didn't go in... Even though I think it did.
-
Goal!
-
They're gonna call interference by Kesler there?
-
They're gonna call interference by Kesler there?
Yeah idk about the call.
-
Well, they got the penalty kill there.
An insurance goal would be real nice right now.
-
Gotta bring a better effort if the US want to win gold.
-
Harder battle than I expected but gotta take the W.
On to the semis....
-
Gonna be a great one tonight between Russia and Canada.
-
7-2 in the 2nd? Canada has found its form.
-
Come home and turn on the game to find its a blowout?
Pretty disappointing. Thought it'd be a good one, not a yawner.

Yeah as did I.
I hope Russia can make a game of it even though time is really against them.
-
Freestyle Skiing is easily one of the best events in the Olympics by far.
-
The game versus Russia was fantastic.
The Women's Gold medal game was great too. Hoping our men's team beats the Slovaks tomorrow.
-
USA Hockey is on fire!!!!
4-0 in the 1st!!!
-
5-0.
This is pretty insane.
-
5-0.
This is pretty insane.
Make it 6-0, just getting ugly.
-
5-0.
This is pretty insane.
Make it 6-0, just getting ugly.
Yeah, its bad.
-
Not the start I was hoping for ... more shots on goal for Canada, too ... we have to stick to what we do best ... keep the pressure on.
-
What a stupid penalty ... like we need to be one man down ... Canada is HUGE on power plays! Geez!
-
OK ... we have a power play for a change ... time to tie this up!
-
Wow ... don't believe this ... this reminds me of the Nets game ... this is like a different US team.
-
They can't even keep pressure on during the power play ... man.
-
We need a score this period. Come ON USA!
-
We need a score this period. Come ON USA!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Oh Man ... what a great chance there ... at least we're being aggressive again.
-
That was a better period, but time is running out. I don't like being down one going into the third, but at least we've made the gap smaller, and we're puttinmg the pressure on again.
-
Come on Boys ... we need one more!!
-
Miller is awesome ... wish we could get one here ... these guys deserve it.
-
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!! US ties it up with 24 seconds left!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Am I the ONLY one watching this?? This is incredible .... USA ties it up with 24 seconds left!! Absolutely incredible!! You out there Donoghus? I hope you're watching this game!! ;)
-
You have NOTHING to feel bad about, Boys ... you were incredible!
-
I'm spent emotionally ... that was an incredible game, and Team USA should hold their heads HIGH! Love you guys ... you were the better team, and Canada knows it. I'm out.
-
Unbelievable game, one of the best I have seen, just wish it ended better.
-

I watched the game too... I wasn't at my house so I couldn't comment about it but it was the best hockey game I've ever watched and most heartbreaking :'(.
Boo Canada.

CANADA
I'd like to see Canada win that game in the states with a crowd of 18,000 cheering on the U.S.
I'm sure the U.S. would have an easier time beating Canada then it was for Canada to beat us to today in Vancouver.
-
Great game. Really hard nosed effort by the US to get back in it, and eventually tie it up. The puck just got under the defender's stick before Crosby picked it up for the game winner.
Nice to see that level of competitive hockey.

Different players than these ones though but Canada was the better team this game and deserved the gold even though if the game was played on U.S. soil I think it would have been a different out come...
Just my opinion.
-
Awe man... So depressed about the loss :'(.
-
You guys played well and it was a good game.
