The life and legacy of 11-time NBA champion and civil rights pioneer Bill Russell will be honored by retiring his uniform number, 6, throughout the league. The iconic Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer will be the first player to have his number retired across the NBA.

I remember Mariano Rivera being the last 42 in baseball.

I'm not a huge fan of the idea of retiring a number league wide, but Bill is certainly worthy of this stature.
Yup

Confirmation that Bill Russell is the greatest basketball player of all time.

Also not really fan a the league wide retirement of the number, but also immediately thought of Mariano Rivera.  That was a cool oddity that MLB retired #42 for Jackie Robinson in '97 but Rivera was grandfathered in until 2013.

So if the NBA grandfathers existing wearers of #6 in, can anybody have one last good run with it?  LeBron's currently wearing it, but probably only has a few years left.  Porzinigis wears it and is young (only 26), but don't think he'll have a long career or stay with the Wizards from here on out.  Besides them, looks like a mix of role players and end of bench guys.  Maybe #6 is completely out of the league in 3 years?

Anything that reminds today’s players and fans of Russell is a good thing.

Cool honor.

As an aside, it's always annoyed me that LeBron switched from No. 23—out of respect to Jordan—but he took No. 6! As though Russell didn't deserve the same respect that LeBron showed Jordan!

If LeBron was classy, he'd give up No. 6 today. But I'm not holding my breath.

Love that the league decided to do this after ignoring Lebrons request to retire 23 league wide
