I wish you a speedy recovery and I hope that you are back to playing the game you love soon. You will be back and better than ever my friend!
I have broken both arms, my right collarbone, my left ring finger, and my right pinky(and then re-broke it) for a grand total of 6 arm/hand/finder injuries.
Fun fact: when I broke my pinky in a game, I scored 22 points in the second half! Thank God I'm a lefty!
Mentally it can be tough, but remember that the bone is no more or less likely to break once it heals. Just thinking about this and saying this to myself over and over got me through the mental apprehension of playing after the injuries.
One piece of advice is to make sure it is healed before you play. I missed half of my senior year because I re-broke my pinky by not waiting it to heal properly.
It stinks that someone undercut you. I always hate hard fouls in pick-up games and sometimes I just stop playing if it happens more than once in one day. I grew up playing outside in the projects so as you can imagine, this was an issue at many courts around my neighborhood. It's just not worth it and honestly gets me so angry.
Last note, I was supposed to play basketball the day after Gordon's injury. I felt sick to my stomach afterwards and texted my buddies that I was not going to play. Injuries like that freak me out. I actually witnessed a similar injury in person at my high school last year. It was a practice. Two players dove for the ball, and one landed on the other's leg and snapped it. His foot was bent exactly like Hayward and he was screaming "am I gonna die, coach!" He was freaking out and I felt so bad for the kid because the basketball season was 3 days away.
Bottom line, injuries suck and we are all rooting for you buddy!
