Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3007.jpg) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4287.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Joakim Noah
Noah brings a lot of energy to the Bulls and he is a presence in the paint.  KG has to match his energy.   In the past,  Noah has been able to get to the basket at will for rebounds and tip ins.  He is also blocking 2.03 shots a game.   In the last meeting between these two teams, Noah finished with his second career triple double.   KG has got to box him out and defend the paint.  This might be a good game for Doc to give Collins some run if Noah starts to go wild inside.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4149.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3710.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Kirk Hinrich
Rondo and Hinrich have history together going back to the 2009 playoffs when Rondo shoved Hinrich into the scorer's table and the 2 got into a skirmish.  Rondo has a speed advantage on Hinrich but Hinrich is a good shooter and so Rondo  will need to stay with him on defense.

Honorable Mention

Paul Pierce vs Luol Deng
Pierce and Deng are always a fun matchup to watch.  Deng is long and a very good defender and has been able to bother Pierce in the past.   He will make Pierce work for his points.  Deng has also been shooting well and is scoring 17.8 ppg and in the past has put up some big games against the Celtics.

Game Notes

The Celtics try to get back on track as they host the Chicago Bulls.  This is the third of 4 meetings between these two teams.  They split a pair of games in Chicago with the Celtics winning on 101-95 and the Bulls pulling out the other 100-89.  They will meet one more time in Boston on February 13.

Although Derrick Rose is rumored to be getting closer to a return to the active roster,  he still isn't cleared for full contact.  Avery Bradley injured his ribs against the Hornets and didn't practice on Thursday.  His status for this game will probably be a game time decision.   The Bulls are a good road team with an 11-5 record while the Celtics have been playing well at home with a 13-7 record, in spite of pitiful effort they brought against the Hornets in their last game there.

The Bulls are coached by former Celtics assistant and defensive guru, Tom Thibodeau.  It follows that they hang their hat on their defense.  They are 3rd in the league in points allowed, giving up  just 91.73 points per game on 43.0% shooting.  The Celtics recent improved defense has moved them up to 7th, allowing 95.71 points per game on 44.6% shooting.

The Celtics are looking to begin another win streak after their 6 game win streak was snapped by the Hornets in their last game.   The Bulls have won 2  in a row and are looking for their 3rd straight.  The Celtics need to play a lot better than they did against the Hornets if they expect to get a win in this one.

Keys to the Game

Rebound -   The Celtics are once again last in rebounding, grabbing just 38.71 per game while the Bulls are 7th with 43.68 rebounds per game.  The Celtics  have to box out and keep Noah from getting easy tip ins and to keep the Bulls from piling up the second chance baskets.  The Celtics have got to crash the boards as a team.  rebounding takes effort and every player has  to put out that effort.

Defense
- Defense has been the Celtics strength in recent years.  It has also been a strength for the Bulls. The Celtics defense finally showed up with the return of Avery Bradley and other than the Hornets game has been solid since his return.   The Celtics need to match the defensive intensity of the Bulls and even exceed it if they want to come out of this game with a win.

Be Aggressive - It's no secret that the more aggressive team gets the calls and usually the win.  The Celtics must start out being aggressive and that starts with Rondo.  They have to be aggressive on the boards, in defending, in going after loose balls, and especially in getting inside to the basket instead of settling for outside jumpers.

X-Factors
Focus
The Celtics obviously weren't focused in their last game against the Hornets.   They shot 37% from the line and the only explanation for that has to be a lack of focus.  They also didn't move the ball or play Celtics defense.  They have to come into this game more focused, or they may be facing a 2 game losing streak.

I read that Carlos Boozer has been playing a lot better recently.

A quick look at his stats, over the last 10 games -- Boozer has averaged 22.6 points per game on 53% field goal percentage along with 11.2 rebounds per game in just 34.3 minutes a game.

Key to this game is shutting down Boozer, who's been playing ridiculous lately. And also making sure Noah doesnt get good positioning on rebounding.

Easy enough to say but once we contain those two things, plus a better shooting like compare to the NO game, we will win.

CELTICS!!!

Yeah we'll need to do a solid job on Boozer to win this game.

Hopefully the C's come out with better energy and aggression tonight.

No way that KG doesn't guard Noah.

10% because Boozer pulls KG out of the paint.

90% because KG and Noah hate each other's guts and KG will want to get in Noah's head.

I would be interested to see Sully on Boozer. I think Sully's physical strength should be a good asset here. Certainly more so than Bass vs Boozer.

The Sully vs Noah (rebounding purposes) and KG vs Boozer (defense) would be very interesting too. Maybe a bit both of matchups. Test them both out for playoff time.

You think?

I don't. I think Sullinger has shown more physicality  defensively and has been tougher for opponents to overpower. Opponents rarely go through or over Sullinger (in one-on-one sequences). They gotta go around him. Opponents can do go over over/through Bass. He's too small (height/frame, good strength). Sully is bigger and tougher to overpower.

Bass LOOKS stronger because he has low body fat and big arms, while Sully is chubby and not very toned.

However, I think Sully has much more core strength than Bass. The former is more "solid" than the latter.

He looks stronger because he is.  He's also much older, which makes a huge difference.  Sullinger relies on his body mass to hold his ground.  He only lifted the bench press 9 times in the workouts, outdone by smaller guys like Lilliard and Crowder to name a few.

Bass on the other hand managed 18 lifts, so I guess you could say Bass is twice as strong  ;D.  And that was before 8 years of NBA-level weight training.

How many times you can do a lift doesn't equal basketball strength.

Sullinger plays a lot stronger than Bass. Both on the offensive and defensive end.

No it equals actual strength.

Sullinger weighs more.

Since when does strength = upper arm strength when measured by bench press, when we're talking about basketball?

Sullinger plays stronger than Bass, weight matters when you're talking about strength. So does your core and your legs.

Unless you think Boozer is going to compare gym reps with Sully/Bass when he posts up or tries to get rebounding position.

I was just giving it as one example...... because that's the only one we have.  If he's that significantly better in one area of the gym chances are he's a hard worker.  You've also got to take into consideration he's been alive 8 years longer.

Sullinger USES his strength more, I think there's a clear distinction.  Notice how much more often he gets called for fouls.  He backs down more and fights for position more.  On the other hand you don't see him dunking in traffic or getting to the line like Bass.

Obviously I'm not discounting Sullinger's weight or his ability to hold his ground.  His weight gives him huge advantages over Bass in terms of using his strength.  Dwight Howard can't move Big Baby but that doesn't mean he's not much stronger.

This is a maddening game to watch.

C's force 10 turnovers already but have only 4 points to show for it.

Bass, Lee, Rondo missing open jumpers, Barbosa missing a layup.

Boston playing great pick-and-roll defense but giving up open looks from 3.

Grrrrr. >:(

true. So far he's been a total non-factor.
With our luck, we trade him to the team that eliminates us from the playoffs and he'll be the reason for that.

Lou Williams looks like he torn something in his knee..we have some guards to replace him in Atlanta..Terry can go back
Even if Williams is out for awhile, they are stacked at the guard position.

Harris

how did we get screwed? I went to the bathroom during the TO :-\

Pierce was fouled and they called a jumpball.
I saw that mess and the analysts on ESPN even said that too. This is some bull I'm so mad (I can't say the word I want) right now.
The refs messed this all up at the end. I'm sitting here yelling at my tv screen.\

they also let Noah take the jump ball when he wasn't in the tie up. Butler and Hinrich tied up Pierce.

This game was lost when PP got double teamed and didn't get rid of the ball, got fouled (which didn't get called) and then we let the bulls tie it to get to overtime.

That PP tie up was the real killer.  Move the ball, make them foul you, play smart don't allow the double team.  If we play smart at that point and make them foul we win by 4.

OMG I am so steamed right now....ugggg

Anybody know why Terry was out there on the final defensive possession guarding a much bigger guy who just happened to hit the game winning shot over the much shorter Terry.  Nice job there Doc.  This is like Marquis Daniels guarding Horford in the playoffs late in the game on two consecutive possessions.  What an idiot.

the ball shouldn't have even went to him in that corner Terry or forget who was wide open on the other end of the court.

It was a terrible shot that simply went in, the defensive assignment had very little to do with it.

And who should we have had on Bellinelli?  Rondo - fouled out, AB - injured.

You got Lee, Jet and Barbosa?  Lee was probably on Hamilton, so it was either Jet or Barbosa...

Nate robinson could have been guarding bellenelli on that shot and it wouldn't have made a difference .... he was laying on his back.

This game was lost when PP got double teamed and didn't get rid of the ball, got fouled (which didn't get called) and then we let the bulls tie it to get to overtime.

Yep, Terry... don't know why Rondo didn't pass it to him. That would've been the game right there.

We won this game, until the referees took it away.

This game turning into a really great one is just added oomph to the gut punch.

Referees again!

The game shouldnt have even gone into OT simple as that. Paul was fouled on that double time. Hope something is mentioned and hope someone forks out some cash. Absolute joke.

Bello, props to him for hefting up a totally Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. shot and it going in somehow

That is true.  But PP needs to get rid of the ball.  Bounce it off their knee, do something to NOT get the tie up call.  That was literally the only way that the bulls were going to get a chance to tie.  We weren't going to shoot early, terrible play by PP, and then a horrible call by the ref to miss the foul, and he was never tied up either.  Perfect storm of bad stuff...

gawd.

Couldn't agree more.  Why Dic puts Terry out on the defensive end with 12 seconds left is criminal.  Lee was on Robinson.  Pierce was on Rip.  Meanwhile, Green sits on the bench.

I don't know.  Jet seemed like he was playing tough D the whole game.  I can't really fault doc for that.  If PP was on Rip, then I think he had the right guys on the court.  It was just an extremely lucky shot.  I mean really lucky.

I would beg to differ.  Belinelli's tough turnaround shot only had a chance because he had a big height advantage to get the shot off.  A similarly sized guy, either Pierce or Lee would have made the shot nearly impossible.

It's not even the result that matters, that of Doc not taking out Terry on defense and Terry's man hitting a shot over him.  It's the coaching failure for leaving him out there.  If Terry is out there, he should be guarding a small guy like Robinson and if Doc didn't like that matchup, he shouldn't be in the game.  Leaving one of your worst and smaller defenders in the game after a timeout is just stupid.

what really sucked is DVRing the game with an extra 30 minutes of time and having the game go into OT and missing the last 1:16 of OT!!!!!

Terry was playing very good D for the entire fourth quarter and overtime.  I have no issue with him being in the game there.

It wasn't a turnaround... he was falling to the floor and did a desperation shot, which luckily went in for him.
