Title: Celtics Memories of games attended in Person
Post by: mspring on August 15, 2018, 12:28:58 PM
I haven't been sure where to post this, but I have been a longtime Celtics fan, since the early 80's who has lived on the West Coast my whole life.  Because of this most of the time I have watched the Celtics on TV through the years.  But I have had the opportunity to attend a few Celtics Games through the years out here.  Unfortunately I have never had the opportunity to watch the Celtics in Boston.  I have caught a couple of Red Sox games at Fenway Park, but I have only been to Boston in the summer and have missed any chance to see the Celtics.

But what I wanted to share is that even though I haven't had the chance to see them live very often, the few times I have I have seen some historic events:

I got to see the Celtics play in Seattle against the SuperSonics in 87 where Bird hit the game-winning shot over Xavier McDaniel that is talked about all the time.  That was incredible to see live.  As a side note I was 17 years old and there with my parents and the Sonics fans behind me were making fun of Danny Ainge, saying who goes by the name "Danny" at his age.  Then a few seconds after they said this, the Sonics announcer says, checking into the game for the Sonics "Danny Vranes."  I couldn't resist so I talked some smack with them and said oh what about being called Danny?  One other caveat to this game was that after Bird hit his shot there were a couple of seconds left on the clock and they called a time out and ran a play for Dale Ellis and his last second shot attempt was blocked by the great Dennis Johnson.  On the way out of the game I was telling Sonics fans they should have never gotten rid of DJ!

The next historical game I got to see was when was living in Los Angeles.  I was at the game where a young Paul Pierce put up 42 points in a loss to the Lakers, but this was the game where Shaq was quoted after the game that Paul Pierce is the Truth, you can mark it down.

The last historical game came in 2013 while I got to see them play the Sacramento Kings.  This game was historical because in the 4th quarter Brad Stevens got ejected by the refs for arguing.  This was the first and only time in his career, college or pro that he has ever been ejected.  Also, in this game Isaiah Thomas went off against the Celtics, I remember not knowing much about him and being surprised how well he was scoring against us.

Anyway, I have felt pretty lucky to have seen some of these things live considering I have not had to opportunity to see many games!  Go CELTICS!!!!

Anyone else have any great memories to share of live games you have attended?

A few that come to mind:

Bookend Larry Bird memories at the old Garden.  I was there for his first game at home vs thee Rockets, and his last "in uniform" for Larry Bird Night".

During the `86 playoffs I was there for the most perfect period of basketball I've ever seen.  The C's outscored the Hawks 36-6 one quarter (I think it was the first), putting on a clinic in every way imaginable.

2008 banner raising opening night vs the Cavs was pretty special too.

More recently, I was there for Pierce's last game winner as a Celtic vs the Clippers.

I saw this game live in Washington (Landover, MD actually).  Bird was absolutely amazing.  Darrell Walker was almost as good.  He hit some shots that in any other game would have been legendary.  The write up below captures some of the highlights but the night was filled with no look passes, crafty help defense, and just about anything else you can think of a player can do to help a team win.  Best game that I ever saw live.

Were this late April or early May, the Washington Bullets' 140-139 double overtime loss to the Boston Celtics Saturday night at Capital Centre would have been the subject of days' worth of media scrutiny and weeks' worth of playground imitation.

"If it had been a playoff-type game," Bullets Coach Kevin Loughery said yesterday, "people would talk about it for a long time."

People may talk about it for a long time, anyway.

For those who might want to say they were among the sellout crowd of 18,643, these are the particulars:

Larry Bird played 53 of the game's 58 minutes, scored 47 points on 19-of-29 field-goal shooting, grabbed eight rebounds and made seven assists. His 23-footer from the right wing as time expired gave Boston the win.

He also sank a three-point goal from beyond the top of the key with four seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game; his three-point attempt while falling into the scorer's table as time expired in the first overtime had nearly won it (the shot hit the back of the rim and bounced out). Oh yes, he also made two free throws with four seconds left in the first overtime to give the Celtics a 131-129 lead that was erased when one of Washington's recent acquisitions, ex-Denver Nuggets guard Darrell Walker, sank a 19-footer to tie it with one second left.

"Bird was just unbelievable," Loughery said.

Bird's 47 points are the most any Celtics player has ever scored against the Bullets in a regular season game. After an offseason during which he retooled his body with three-hour workouts five or six days a week, Bird seems poised for a special season.

"He's thinner than he was last season, but he's bigger in his arms and upper body," said Bullets forward Charles Jones, who had the misfortune of having to cover Bird on the game-ending sequence, an inbound play from halfcourt. "He's shooting the ball better than I've seen him shoot in years. He's making shots you wouldn't want most guys to take, and it's not like he's lucking them in -- they're normal shots for him . . .

"On that last play I just tried to deny him the ball. They made a pretty good inbound pass and once he got it, there wasn't much I could do except hope his shot wouldn't go in."

I've been to one game in person. It was the game last year when Brown landed on the back of his neck and laid motionless for a few minutes. The entire crowd was hushed and on their feet. Minny fans treated him with respect.

I've only seen two games in person - first at Charlotte at the end of 2008.  One of the Big 3 - think Pierce - had a kid shortly beforehand and so Doc gave the entire Big 3 the night off  >:(  Got to see Posey, Powe and House lead the team to a blowout win anyway.

Saw them the next season at Washington. All of the Big 3 played - yay! - but Washington was one of the worst teams in the league that year and we crushed them by over 30.

Welp those are my stories.

My one and only in-person Celtics game was the one against Brooklyn in which Rondo got ejected for fighting with Brook Lopez. Boston lost that game, which bummed me out, but it was at least memorable.

That also broke Rondo's 10+ assist streak which was starting to get close to the all-time record if I remember right.

The games I have seen in person are from Larry Bird's last season in 1992 , 4 home games against the Warriors, Bullets, Hawks and Pistons, Celtics won them all , Best individual performance from that lot was Micheal Adams dropping 37 for the Bullets.
The following year saw them play all four games on a west coast road trip , At Golden State, Denver, LA Lakers and Portland. The Celtics won all four games
Best memories from those games was a big comeback in the fourth against the Lakers at the forum, I think at the time it was a record 49 points in the win.
Actually stayed at the same hotel as the team in Denver, waiting to get in the elevator out walks Robert Parish, impeccably dressed , it is striking how talk those seven footers are up close and personal.
Saw them play another set of home games against Dallas, Philadelphia and the Suns.
Only lose was against Barkley's Suns, that was his MVP season.
Turned out to be McHale and Reggie Lewis' last season for the team that year.

The season opener in 2010.  Shaq's first game with the Celts, the first game with Lebron and Bosh on the Heat, a Celtics win, an electric crowd.  It was my first game seeing Shaq in person, and that guy is just a giant compared to other players.

I remember seeing Shaq play the Celtics very early in his career, I can't remember if it was his rookie season or not, but it was crazy watching him destroy the older Celtics front line.

2002 Round 1 Game 5 vs the Sixers is probably one of my fondest memories.  Sat in the nose bleeds.  That was the first playoff game I went to.  It was awesome seeing the Celtics finally relevant again. The 90's were so disappointing.

Antoine's first game back as a Celtic was cool.  He'd always been a favorite player of mine, and I was thrilled to have him back.

I also went to quite a few games during the Pierce/Garnett era, including game 2 of the 2008 Finals and game 3 of the 2010 Finals.  Opening night in 2007 when the team made their debut with Garnett/Allen was crazy, and opening night in 2008 when they raised the banner was even better.  Finally getting to see one of all those banners put up in person was surreal.

Haven't been to very many games since 2012, and none really stick out as overly memorable.

2012 ECF game 4. The OT win against the Heat to tie up the series, and LeBron fouling out. Man the Garden was rocking that night.

Such a Rondo way to miss out on (potentially) getting an NBA record - fighting a 7 footer.

I'll always love Rondo

Yep, I drove approximately 19 hours across the country with a buddy to catch that game. It was my parents’ baccalaureate graduation gift to me.

The crowd was definitely rocking that night. The best and loudest moment was when Lebron fouled out. Gave me chills!

I'll never forget the first game I ever went to. It was February 1st 2002 and we played the T-Wolves on a Friday night at the Fleetcenter back in the day. I was in 5th grade at the time and never went to a game live so I was super excited to see PP, Antoine and the Celtics live play KG. We were literally the last row of the nosebleeds so me and my brother was able to stand up the entire game screaming and cheering the Celtics on.

That game was super epic with lead changes and a brief altercation KG had with Tony Battle. We ended up losing in overtime when Pierce missed a three pointer, but man I became a beloved Celtics fan that Friday night. No game will ever top that first game that still gives me memories of childhood excitement for basketball.

I saw my first game back in the 87/88 season back in the old Boston Garden. My seat was positioned directly behind a pillar - it was quite the obstructed view.

I still loved it though! I stood off to the side most of the game so I could actually see it :).

More recently I saw 2018 game 1 against the 76ers... It was awesome! Rozier went for 29 and Tatum for 28 in a blowout.

First Celtics game I ever went to;  April 1, 1990 at the Boston Garden.

9 years old. Sunday afternoon game.   Floor seats baseline behind the basketball.  Maybe 5-6 rows back. Think my dad had gotten them from some regular at his bar.  Celtics against the expansion Orlando Magic.    Bird dropped 36.  Just remember being in awe of finally seeing Bird, McHale, Parish, DJ, & the actual Garden in person.

Celtics won.

Early 90's at the LA Sports Arena for Clippers vs Celtics.  Going to those games you realize there were quite a few Celtic fans in the LA area - was practically a home game for them.  Can't remember if they were tied or down 1 but Bird goes to the line with .9 seconds left.  People under the basket are holding life size pictures of women in bikinis to distract him.  He sinks both free throws so Celtics are up by either one or two.  After the time out Bo Kimble (I think) heaves a turn around three that goes in.  Felt like I was punched in the gut.  Fortunately they had waived it off saying time had expired.  Celtics win.

I've got a great track record.

Saw 3 home games in early February 2010. Wins against Miami and New Jersey and a loss against Orlando. Main thing I wanted to see was the starting 5 of Rondo, Allen, Pierce, Garnett and Perkins which very nearly didn't happen as Pierce injured his foot against Washington before the Miami game. The next day there were reports that it might be broken and I was devastated. Fortunately he recovered to play in the last game I saw against Orlando.

In late January/early February 2013 I saw 8 consecutive games.
Loss @ Detroit.
Loss @ Cleveland (Kyrie took over down the stretch).
Narrow home loss against the Knicks.
Loss @ Atlanta in double OT in a game where the Celtics lead by 26 points at one stage during the first half. Korver went nuts shooting 3s and apparently the 12 point margin was a Celtics record for a double OT loss.
Finally the next game against Miami at home, Ray Allen's first back in Boston, I got to see a win in OT. The win though was very much soured by the news that Rondo had torn his ACL in the Atlanta game. I found out when I was waiting to get back to my seat during the 2nd quarter when an usher just casually leaned over to me and said "Rondo's out for the season". I got my own dose of what happened to Pierce when that reporter broke the news to him in the post game interview.
After that I saw 3 more home wins against the Kings, Magic and Clippers so at least got to finish on a high seeing 4 straight wins after 4 straight losses.

Last year I came over for the first 4 games of the season, including of course the first game in Cleveland. No elaboration needed.

Just once I'd like to travel the nearly 11,000 miles from Adelaide to Boston and not have anything catastrophic happen.  :(

I live in the DC area so the only games I see are against the Wizards.

My most memorable was I went to a game where I sat three rows back behind the celtics bench.  It was a very tight game until half time but in the 2nd half, Pierce came out and absolutely murdered Jerry Stackhouse on both ends of the floor.  It was hilarious and amazing all at the same time, Celts won handily

I usually only go to 2-3 games a year and usually get tickets from a friend who has season tickets. So, I usually get games that are against crap teams.

But back in the 80's I did go to one really special game. I think it was 1985. McHale went for 56 against what would soon become the Detroit Bad Boys and set a Celtic record for points in a game. That crowd was off the charts knowing that McHale was getting close to the record and the team kept feeding him and he kept hitting buckets.

Don't remember the final score but both teams were well over 120 points each. McHale put on an amazing show. Best offensive performance I ever saw in person.

I live in the DC area and have seen all the Cs games for the past 30+ years.  The best game I ever saw was Nov. 7, 1987, double overtime win by the Cs.  Bird scored 47 points, Ainge scored 28 points with 12 assists, and DJ had 17 assists.  Bird tied the game in regulation with a 3-pointer with 4 seconds to go.  He then hit 2 free throws with 4 seconds to go in the first overtime.  Finally, Bird hit the winning shot in the second overtime as time expired...140-139.  Unbelievable to watch that game in person.

My only Celtic game in person ever was Feb 26, 2011 versus Clippers at Staples Center in LA

C's won the game, but it was kind of a downer because Perk had just been traded a couple days before.  I didn't know much about Jeff Green and even less about Nenad Krstic who started.

Pretty good seats, and there were quite a few other Celtic fans there.  Hopefully someday I can get to see a game in Boston.

Living here in Knoxville - my best place to see the Celts has always been Atlanta. I went there twice in the 70's, one game I went courtside afterwards and met Johnny Most. My BEST Celtic memory. Also went several times in the 80's.

My one game in Boston was the old Garden, Easter Sunday 1985 vs Knicks. Ernie Grunfeld (former Vol) got me tickets.
What an experience. It was beautiful - All about the basketball back then - no screaming PA, no loud music, no dance team.
And the Celtics run out for layup lines with the simple intro, "Ladies & Gentleman, Your World Champion Boston Celtics".
Gave me chills.

My first game I remember was against the Grizzlies in 2011, I was sitting in the Halo seats as part of a college alumni event. Been to a lot of games since. Top ones are:

KG's last night in the Garden. He didn't play but he danced to Gino time.

Smart's coming out game as a rookie against the Wizards. Somehow got free court side seats from someone my sister worked for. Pierce was on the Wizards that year and Rondo D'd him up right in front of me for the steal and come back win.

Pierce's last night in the Garden. Watching him drill that 3 to end the game. May have shed a tear...

Getting wrecked by the Cavs but it not really mattering because we were raising #34 to the rafters.

Last year's Golden State game and watching Brown go off.

This year's Christmas game. It's always been on the bucket list to see the C's play on Christmas and to see them get an OT win over Philly was unreal.

My first time at the Garden was in April 2016. I live in SD so I went to Boston to run the Boston marathon but I took a whole week prior to the race to know the city and, of course, go to a Celtics game. I have been a Celtics fan since the 80s (back then I lived in Spain) so for me going to the Garden was as big of a moment as the Boston Marathon. I remember that we were playing for play off seeding and playing the Miami Heat, also in the play off race with us. We were down 26 points at the Half. It was the night we were honoring the Champion Teams from the 60s, 70s and 86... Bill Russel, Bill Walton, Kevin McHale  and many other Boston legends were there in the building...You could feel that something special was coming...The garden was rocking in the second half and we came back and won the game. I was an incredible experience!! IT4 was the king of the 4th, we were a bunch of underdogs but a fun team to root for!

I wlll always remember seeing Havlicek score 54 on the Hawks on April 1,1973 in the old Garden. Hondo was especially clutch in the playoffs.

I went to 9 or 10 Celtics games in Atlanta during the 80’s. The most memorable one was round 2 of the 1986 playoffs. Bird had 28 and missed a triple double by one rebound. Dominique had 38. I also went to a playoff game at the Omni in 83 that Atlanta won by 2 to tie the series(3 game series).
I saw the 2008 team play in Charlotte. Down 2 with 4.7 seconds left, Charlotte was inbounding the ball, Eddie House poked it to Pierce, who threw it to Ray Allen. Allen hit a three to end the game, and Big Baby carried him off the court.
One of these days I’m going to make it to Boston for a game.

Oh man, I’ve been fortunate to go to some great games. Other than my first game (a game 82 loss to Milwaukee), every one I’ve been to had something historic happen. I’ve seen Porzingis’s TD Garden debut during the preseason (I made a post about how tall and good he was), the Jordan Crawford triple-double (which also featured Brandon Bass’s either first or second career three), IT’s 53 point masterpiece against the Wizards, the 2018 game 1 against Philly (when Terry and I believe Tatum went off), and Hayward’s 30-something point game versus the Timberwolves. My mom and brother also got to go to their first game to see Trae Young’s first game at TD. So many great memories, and most of them were thanks to CB members selling tickets for affordable prices!

Three top memories:
#1 - Game 6 of the '08 finals.  KG put back (throw in) and1 was electric.  I can't believe I didn't go tumbling down all the rows of the balcony I was jumping so much that game.
#2 - Game 7 of Cavs series in '08.  Never that postseason was there ever such a possibility we could lose a series.  You just had no clue how the game would turn out.  The Pierce jump ball was an unforgettable moment.
#3 - Game 1 of the '08 finals.  When Pierce went down, my stomach just sank.  I thought the run was over.  Then when the random cheering happened, you just knew to look to the tunnel and there he was.  Tingles were shot through my whole body.

I have one random poor memory that will never go away -- December 19, 2007 -- Celtics v. Pistons.
Celtics had started out the 07-08 campaign undefeated at home, something like 12-0 or 13-0 so far.  We were losing, but fought back to tie the game and Detroit called timeout about to inbound with under 2 sec in regulation.  I said to myself, "No way they score in this final 1 second and I've gotta pee.  I'm gonna beat the crowd before the OT break."  I'm walking through the concourse and I hear the sighs of disgust from the crowd.  I look up at the TV in the concourse and I see Tony Allen bite a stupid jumpshot upfake and foul Chauncey Billups with 0.1 seconds left sending him to the free throw line to end the game.  I hated Tony after that play, but eventually came around to love him.

As teenagers we drove down to New York and the old MSG in 1967 for game 4 of a best 3 of 5 between the Celtics and Knicks. The legendary Celtics guard Sam Jones was unconscious that night and scored 51 points as the Celtics won the series 3-1. Unfortunately, they lost in the next round to a great Sixers team. The Sixers were so loaded that year with Wilt, Hal Greer, Chet Walker, Billy Cunningham, and Luke Jackson. They went 68-13 that regular season and won the title easily. The Celtics did get revenge the next year and came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat Philly 4-3 and eventually win the title.

I attended my first Celtics game in the 1969-70 season vs the Chicago Bulls.  I was 6 years old.  I've been to lots over the years and still go.  Here's one of the most memorable - 1995, vs the Timberwolves.

Todd Day, in my opinion was one of the worst Celtics ever - I could not STAND his game, much the way Rozier ticked so many of us off last season.  The guy would clank shot after shot - and never pass.  Think a lousy version of Marcus Morris....

That particular edition of the Celtics stunk.  But Day came off the bench and scored a career high 41 points - which may be the most shocking Celtics performance I've ever seen - in person or otherwise.  My buddy and I were stunned and we kept saying - Todd F---g Day going off - who'da thunk...lol

What I also remember about that game, was a skinny, 18 year old Kevin Garnett getting a few minutes off the bench for Minnesota, and looking pretty good.  That was his rookie season.  I remember thinking at the time that this guy was supposedly going to be a stud, but was just getting his feet wet in the league and was just a beanpole.  It was pretty cool to see him get in for a few minutes.  I looked up the box score from that one and he ended up scoring 17 that night, which was a lot more than I thought.

For some reason, that game sticks out.

TP, I remember watching that Todd Day game on TV and being just as stunned.  it was a fun highlight in an otherwise awful season.

I wish I’ve been to more C’s games.

My first game in Boston was against the Lakers (very fun until Ray missed a shot at the buzzer to lose the game).

Also went to Pierce and Garnett’s return to Boston with the Nets, that was an awesome game.

Last season, went to the thriller against the Warriors.

But my favorite was the Paul Pierce jersey retirement. Yeah we got smoked and the game was a dud, but the atmosphere and ceremony after was unbelievable.

5 that stand out to me:

When I was 10 I saw them play the hawks in 2004 or 5. I don’t remember the game but during the 4th quarter some guy gave my friend and I two passes to meet the hawks after the game amongst their family and friends. Zaza was really intimidating but nice. Childress was cool as hell.

Paul pierce’s Last game at the garden (as a clipper). Nuff said.

Game 7 vs Atlanta in 2008. We stomped em but it was electric to be there in a game 7. It was Sam Cassell’s first decent game for us in the playoffs lol.

2018 Al Horford buzzer beater vs Portland. Best single game moment for me.

I love this team.

Two for me

1)First Celts game at old Garden in the 90-91 season vs the Pacers.

2.)Being there live in '08 when they won the title (had a mini-plan that year and got the chance to go to the finals.) Nothing will probably ever top that.

I was at that game too. And then took me forever to find my car in the Garden Garage (lol)

Since I'm from Europe, the only Celtic game I've been to was in Italy back in 2012 when they played against Olimpia Milano. I got the seats at the back of the arena, but throughout the game I slowly moved closer to the court (there were enough empty seats). By the final buzzer I was standing on the court and we made a tunnel with some fans, through which the players passed. After the game I went out back to wait for the players by the bus. I got lucky and got Garnett's and Rivers' autograph!!!

My wife and I are planning on going to USA soon to see a game (I said I only want to see a playoff game). She's pretty bummed that Kyrie left, she thinks he's cute and just got his shirt. She asked me the other day if she has to burn it now haha.
