This is a very interesting signing, IMO.

Torry Holt heading to New England
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 20, 2010 1:52 PM ET
The New England Patriots are about to add a veteran wide receiver.

Tom E. Curran of CSNNE.com tweets that Torry Holt will be signing with the Patriots.

In 2009 Holt played in 15 games for the Jaguars, starting 12 and catching 51 passes for 722 yards.

Holt, who will turn 34 in June, played his first 10 seasons with the St. Louis Rams and said early in the offseason that he wanted to be reunited with his old Rams coach and current Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz. But the Bears never showed much interest, and now Holt is heading to New England.

Holt obviously isn't the star he used to be, but he'll be fine as a second or third receiver.

I love it. Although I was hoping they would trade up to get Dez Bryant this move makes that less likely than it already was.

Agree completely. He caught 50 balls last year with a mediocre Qb throwing to him.

If the Pats draft Bryant in the 1st or Tate in the 2nd, when Welker comes back I believe their WR corps will be one of the best in the league.

Hey I will definitely take a hall of famer who caught 50 passes last year as my number 2 guy across from Moss.  I think that is a huge addition since their 2nd receiver in the playoffs was Sam Aiken or Edelman.

Even with this signing, I wouldn't put it past them to address the WR position early on.  There's still a lot of uncertainty at that position and signing a 34 year old is not a long-term solution by any means.

Let's hope he doesn't turn into Joey Galloway (he shouldn't).

Agreed, but now the Pats have options.
I'd be overjoyed if Mankins was resigned prior to the draft.

Sadly, this news does not bode well for my boy, the General.

He may not make it out of camp.   :'(

A veteran receiver, short terms low money.  Productive throughout his career, productive last year on a run dominated team.  Whats not to like here?

If the Pats draft Bryant in the 1st or Tate in the 2nd, when Welker comes back I believe their WR corps will be one of the best in the league.

They won't draft Dez Bryant.  He'll be gone before #22, and the Pats VERY rarely trade up to pick someone - and Bryant's not the guy they'll trade up for.  Golden Tate, maybe in the second.     Not sure about him since he seems to project as a slot guy, and they've got Welker coming back and Welker II in Edelman.  Maybe with the last 2nd rounder if he's still on the board, but I'm thinking they address their needs at TE, LB, and maybe RB before grabbing a wideout.

Don't forget the other Tate (Brandon?) that we drafted last year, they seem to be reasonably high on him.

EDIT: As to Torry Holt....   meh.  Maybe he's got enough left to be a fourth wideout, but we'll have to see.  He's spent most of his career indoors, too, let's see how he does in January (or ideally... February ;)).
