Rick Carlisle -- who led Dallas to the 2011 NBA championship -- informed Mavericks owner Mark Cuban today that he won't be returning as coach next season, Carlisle told ESPN. Carlisle had two years left on his contract. He spent 13 seasons as Mavericks coach.

It was time for a change. I think Carlisle is overrated as a coach, honestly. He's solid, but he's also controlling and combative.

Didn't Ainge specifically mention Carlisle when asked about potential head coaching replacements?

The Mavs are doing a reset.  First Donny Nelson, now Carlisle.

He’s the first one of the fired coaches that I have interest in.  That said, he’s definitely a guy who demands discipline.  He isn’t the “player’s coach” that most stars want.

I think he'd do better with a team closer to contending. I can see the Bucks as a huge possibility when if Bud gets fired.

Yeah I'd like to see that.

Mavericks have a ready-to-go head coach in waiting in Jamahl Mosley, who should get consideration to succeed Carlisle. Mosley is one of the NBA’s top assistant coaches who has (and will) generate interest from other teams.

If you believe reporters, Luka and Carlisle didn't get along.

Yeah, I think Ricky C is going to retire and did it now so the Mavs don't lose Mosley.

Mark me down as hopeful he gets a look with us. We are a team that needs discipline. We have a very young roster.
