A couple of thoughts from reading this thread:
Washed up is almost universally used to describe someone who is no longer successful or effective.
Most athletes age like milk, but there are some players who really don't function well in a particular system or team that may appear to be washed but could positively contribute to the right team.
Chris Paul had a Horford-esque year in the regular season, since the conversation has gone like this (effective, but not washed up, but absolutely washed up if you're celticsclay and washed up just means losing a step). He is have a brilliant series against Denver, but that's only two games.
This is correct. The one guy that I think most people regarded as washed up that has really turned it around is Derrick Rose. I mean there was thought a few years back that the only reason he wasn't going to retire was to keep getting paid by Adidas. And there he was as a finalist for 6th man of the year, receiving a 1st place vote for MVP, and generally looking like a nice solid NBA player again and contributing on a winning team. He obviously is no where near his MVP peak, but he also isn't looking like a guy on his last legs like he was at the end of the 17-18 season.
