I think the new coach must meet at least two of the following criteria: former player, former head coaching experience, and African-American.

Love Atkinson, but I think the African-American thing is important. Same with Mchale. I’d be happy with a Sam Cassell or Chauncey Billups type.

But for the love of God, no Larranaga, which is unfortunately what I expect.

Larry! Larry! Larry!
Any chance of that? Any chance he’s getting that itch to coach again? Seems like a long shot, but we can dream, right?

I don't think Bird could physically do it.  :(

prediction:

Coach K gives 1 to 2 years of his life to the Celtics...then retires.

oh never mind...he has one year in college...forget it.

Yeah I think Cassell or Billups would make a lot of sense.

I was wondering about Micah Shrewsberry's name would pop up

I think he just got his first head coaching job at Penn State.  I can’t expect he’d be considered ready for an NBA job at this point.

Can anybody with Insider share which names Arnovitz mentions in this article?

anyone?
He lists 10 coaching prospects, and categorises them as:

Former players: Chauncey Billups, Malik Allen, Willie Green.
Renaissance coach: Darko Rajakovic.
The video room: Dan Craig.
The international ranks: Will Weaver.
The long-time assistant: Fred Vinson.
The college game: Patrick Ewing, Niele Ivey.
The minor leagues: Jason March.

And then lists 5 guys appearing on former lists: Darvin Ham, Johnnie Bryant, Will Hardy, Charles Lee, Wes Unseld Jr.

And lastly, lists the retreads: Jason Kidd, Kenny Atkinson, Mike D'Antoni, Dave Joerger and Mike Brown.

Of those, I would be happy with Ham, Joerger, Malik Allen, Bryant, Lee and Unseld Jr. The others I either do not want or don't know enough about.

Target #1 for me is Juwan Howard.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

the team clearly tuned Stevens out. Tatum and Brown are very talented but its clear they need someone who will reign them in and get them to play team winning basketball. someone who will command respect from Tatum/Brown that they will listen to.

its too bad actually that Doc Rivers isnt still available. but I think a former player is a must.

Now, being a GM is a totally different animal. I hope Brad stevens has the ability to find guys who complement Tatum/Browns game.

I don't know about fit but I liked Dave Joerger...

Give me Mike D’Antoni and Udoka as his #1 assistant, so that he can be groomed to take over in a few years.  Udoka was a long time assistant for the Spurs, so I would hope that he could bring an edge defensively, while Mike handles the offense. That would be ideal.

Not comfortable with first time head coaches when the C’s have two all-stars and are trying to win now.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Malik Allen is interesting in that he's got some seasoning coaching under Spo, but is also a former player.
