Summer 2021 Fantasy Draft: General discussion

Was it determined when this starts? Remember, here in the states we have Labor day coming up. People tend to travel and do family stuff during that long weekend.

Maybe start next Monday. Get the first 5 rounds in next week, then the week after go Tuesday thru Friday, 2 rounds a day for 13 total rounds?

Does that make sense for everyone?

The OP has been updated with the draft order. We will, of course, be doing serpentine drafting. Yet to finalise a day to start the draft, but I think it's good to give people a few days to a) check the thread and be aware of what's going on, and b) explore trading draft picks.

Anyone got any specific preference for draft dates?

#2 pick in the draft + NBA championship in the same year! Reminds me of the 1986 draft.

I'm glad you posted this - I had no idea it was your Labor Day coming up. In Victoria (my state) and Tasmania it's in early March - rest of Australia it's in early October. How's that for confusing!

I think this is a good way of doing things, and unless anyone has any serious objections (remember, you can always PM me or someone else a draft list for the round(s) you will miss) I think it's how we should do it.

Ohhh 3rd! Very fun place, so many directions to go assuming the top two are what I expect they'll be...3rd is the first one to me that gets super interesting and a lot of the players demand a specific direction. Not a lot of room between 3rd - 7th or something IMO.

Re: the point earlier on a certain injured player, is this based on actual expectations for 2021-2022 or if everyone were healthy?

I'd rather we start around mid September tbh, but I'm OK with whatever you guys want. Fwiw, training camp starts on September 28. The regular season starts on October 19. We got plenty of time.

Not thrilled with the 12th pick but at least the expectations will be low.  Are we able to draft rookies?

Man, 9th place? Not the worst, but it'll be hard to predict who's there. That might make it a bit more exciting though.

I was assuming we're able to draft rookies, given we're projecting for the 2021-22 season, but it will naturally be hard to predict how a rookie will go and thus defend them.

So you're saying my idea of an all rookie team might not fly?  Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Funny story about rookies and this draft:

In the summer of 2011 we did one of these and my team had Lebron James. Plus a bunch of other excellent players. The team had the most talent in that draft. We voted rounds of the playoffs back then. In the semis my team faced a team starting a rookie, Derrick Williams.

Because Lebron lost in the Finals weeks earlier and because Derrick Williams was a #2 pick that had a good defensive reputation in college, voters were swayed to believe that Derrick Williams, someone who had never played an NBA minute, would be able to contain Lebron in a playoff series.

Lebron then went one to win 5 of the next 10 NBA titles. Derrick Williams went on to be JAG.

It's Celticsblog. The Lebron hate was palpable. Looking back, it's easy to see which team should have won that draft.

Point is, rookies are rookies and therefore are unknowns. If you are going to try to put a rookie in an important role and expect to win this draft, remember.....Derrick Williams. You might convince some people that a rook can have a Magic Johnson type effect. The reality is....almost all rookies don't have that effect.
