Celtics 2021 Draft picks
Standings as of 5/5/2021

Boston Pick #17
Games Behind    Current Wins     Games Left    Last 10
SAS                      2.5                    31                     8                 5-5
Charlotte               2.5                    32                     7                 5-5
Memphis                1.5                    32                     8                 4-6
GSW                     1.5                    33                      6                 5-5
Boston                  ---                    34                      7                5-5
Miami                   +0.5                   35                     6                 7-3
Atlanta                  +1.5                  36                      6                 6-4
Portland                +2.0                   36                     7                 4-6

Second Round Pick
Boston - #47
—> OKC pick protected 31-55 so it will not be conveying.

-->C’s are continuing to play .500 ball.  While theoretically still in range of catching the Knicks, Mavs and Lakers in the standings (and worse pick) with a 3 game difference, their play of late and shrinking number of games makes it highly unlikely they catch them so they’ve been dropped from the standings list.
2 games coming up with Miami so they have a chance to catch them in the standings and get out of the play-in situation but I expect Miami to fight like hell to avoid that play-in too.  C’s have a bit of a buffer between them and the teams lower than them in the standings so the odds of them improving their pick slot are shrinking.  Things are still at a point where a hot or cold streak to end the season for any of these teams can swing their pick slot quite a bit.

Last year, Memphis entered the bubble in the #17 slot. #14 seemed like wishful thinking.

They dealt with injuries including Jaren Jackson Jr. and lost most of their seeding games before being mercifully bounced by Portland in the 8/9 play-in.

Is there optimism that two teams will eliminate the hopeless C's in the play-in tournament, moving the pick from #16 to #13?

right now they're at 15 but not sure how the play-in bracket from the West impacts it there's 9 teams out West with better records.  will have to see how the east bracket plays out.    if the C's are knocked out and the Spurs get through the play-in, C's could jump to 12.

Celtics 2021 Draft picks
Standings as of 5/17/2021

Boston Pick #16
Games Behind    Current Wins     Games Left    Last 10

Boston                  ---                    36                     0                4-6

Second Round Pick
Boston - #46
—> OKC pick protected 31-55 so it will not be conveying.

-->C’s in any other season would have the #16 pick.  This year however, it could drop depending on how they do in the play-in.

As I understand the situation:
-if the C’s are knocked out completely, they’re in the lottery.  Their position would improve depending on how the Western play-ins go.  If SAS wins into the playoffs, the C’s have a worse record than all the other Western playin teams so they’d jump to #12 in that situation.
-if the C’s win either of the 2 play in games, they’re in the playoffs and their draft slot would change accordingly.  They could stay at 16 or slide to 15 OR if the Western teams in the playin pull some upsets, they could climb to 17.

Quite the possible swing in playoff slots going into the next few days.  Could still place anywhere from 12 to 17.

I don’t think it’s possible for the C’s to wind up at 15.  If they lose to the Wizards, they’d still have a better record and get pick 16 (or 17 if the Spurs make it through the play-in).

Also, the Celtics will have pick 45 in the second-round, which is always decided by regular season record only, so lottery teams with better records than playoff teams can pick outside the top 14 in the second.

I stand corrected on the second round - thanks.  miscounted.

on the play-in, I could be very wrong on the 15 slot --> my understanding is that once the playoffs are set, the standings per conference determine position but record counts in regards to the other conference.  having written that out, it makes me question my source.  I'll dig into that.

With the Spurs loss last night, I think we’re now locked into picks 16 and 45.  Hopefully the bright side of our disappointing season is a player falling out of the lottery whom we wouldn’t have been able to grab in the 20s being available at 16.

yup, SAS could have pushed us to 17.  with everyone in the West with a better record than us and whoever wins between Wash and Indy having a worse record than us, our first rounder will be #16.
