I don't get all the talk about Pierce and Ray taking home-town discounts. Sure, they each could've waited to see how free agency played out with LeBron, etc., which is when they would've gotten their offers from other clubs. But I find it hard to believe that any team would've given these guys more money annually than they got from the Celtics, especially Ray. Sure, maybe a team would've given him a 3rd year, but it would've been at the MLE most likely, which probably comes out to the $20 million he'll make in 2 yrs. With Pierce, maybe a team like the Clippers overpays for him. But most likely, I think GM's see him as a player, while still all-star caliber, on the downside of his career, and wouldn't be willing to pay big money to take him on.
I'm glad that we're going to make one more run at it, and that Ray's contract is up at the same time as KG's, but I think we're going a little overboard with all the "hometown discount" stuff. If LeBron was trying to get Ray to go to Miami, it would've been for a very cheap contract, so there's no discount there.
