Heat attempting to trade Kyle Lowry; would Raptors return work?

By Sam Amico -January 22, 2024

It’s always hard to know how far the Miami Heat can go. Last year, for instance, they looked like they were headed nowhere. Then they made it to the Finals.Kyle Lowry
This year, who knows? Maybe they are on a similar path. But they may try to make some changes ahead of the Feb. 8 trade deadline.

Per Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, the Heat are attempting to move on from point guard Kyle Lowry, for starters.

Lowry is in the final year of a contract that pays him $29.7 million. And expiring contracts are always valuable at the deadline.

“The Heat continues to explore trades involving Kyle Lowry ahead of the Feb. 8 NBA trade deadline, according to multiple league sources,” Chiang wrote. “Lowry holds value on the trade market with his sizable expiring $29.7 million salary.”

The Heat originally signed Lowry to a three-year, $85 million deal in August 2021 as part of a sign-and-trade arrangement with the Toronto Raptors.

This season, he’s averaging 8.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.1 steals, shooting 43 percent from the field and 39 percent on 3-pointers. Overall, the Heat are 92-63 in the regular season when Lowry plays.

Miami has been linked to Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier and Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, and both players are said to be available. Charlotte may certainly have interest in a contract such as Lowry’s, given they could use it to clear some cap space.

Rozier reportedly would like to play for the Heat if traded.

“Terry Rozier’s strong play has made the combo guard a more viable trade candidate than ever at his $24 million average annual salary, with a known preference to join the Miami Heat, league sources told Yahoo Sports,” wrote Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.

The Heat are also believed to be interested in new Raptors guard Bruce Brown, and given that’s where Lowry’s career was most successful, perhaps a deal could be worked out with Toronto.

It’s not known if the Raptors are interested in such a deal, but Lowry is certainly beloved by the fan base and a final half-season run there may help a team that recently landed RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley.

Lowry, 37, is a six-time All-Star. He carries NBA career averages of 14.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.3 steals with the Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, Raptors and Heat. He was a member of the Raptors’ 2019 championship team.

It's right there in the article.  He's an expiring contract.

Expiring contracts at the deadline have no value (positive or negative) to the team receiving it. This makes it valuable to a team that is looking to dump bad salary, and good for matching salary in a deal that involves a lot of picks, but it has no value on its own. You would never trade for an expiring because it's an expiring, it doesn't have value that way (especially at the deadline, since you can't use that salary in a different deal).

I don't see the Heat trading him for a bad value contract because I think they want to still be contenders, but I could see them trying to use his deal with picks or young guys to get a better player. Maybe they'll go for Lavine or DeRozan? They would be awful fits, but Spoelstra would somehow make it work
I'm bitter.

I think he's an expiring contract.

Heat fans getting excityed for Rozier after wanting Dame is fun to see.

Rozier would be a great get for Miami. He'd fit in very well in that offense at PG with Jimmy as a playmaking wing and Bam as a playmaking big. Let Terry concentrate on scoring. His three point shooting would be a great fit there as well.

Rozier has 3 more years left on his contract.  If Charlotte wants to save 20m per year then they could easily do this deal for Lowry and a 1st.

Isn’t Rozier slightly duplicative with Herro? Feels like the Heat need more of an actual distributor PG than another high volume shooter.

They don't need a distributor at PG when they have a playmaking wing in Jimmy and a playmaking big in Bam. They have a decentralized offense with less responsibility on the PG for playmaking.

I do not see Rozier as duplicative of Herro. Rozier at PG. Herro at SG. Both guys provide some ball-handling and passing. Both guys are strong shooters. Both guys can score at a good clip. Gives Jimmy and Bam some firepower next to them. They can all co-exist and play well alongside one another.

They may do that cause they are the Hornets but they should be trying to add talent not get rid of talent for nothing.

If I'm Charlotte, I might do something like

Lowry, Jovic, Miami 1st

for

Rozier, Smith, Ntilikina

Something like that makes some sense. I'd absolutely want Jovic and a 1st though.  And that makes sense for Miami as well.  Just not sure that is the best use of the 1st rounder though, which would be the only hesitation.

Of course Lillard is a much better player, but on first glance statistically this season it's actually close:

Damian Lillard 25.3/6.9 (50/35/92)
Terry Rozier 23.2/6.6 (53/36/85)

Heat continue to overvalue their players and picks.
Let them get Rozier. There is only one ball in Miami and Rozier is a chucker.

I really hope Boston runs into Miami again in the playoffs. I think the Celtics would beat their heads in.

This Heat team is not very good at all...worse than last year.
