Game Notes

The Boston Celtics look to expand on their recent winning ways and extend their current 3 game winning streak to four games with a revenge win against the New York Knicks, the last team to beat the Celtics in the TD Garden, 117-109. After that game, Brad Stevens said there were "50,000 things wrong with this club".  Boston has gone on to win 4 of 5 games after that loss and has played a consistent 48 minutes of basketball, brought back their excellent defense, but most importantly have been playing great offense straight from the start of each game. Since that game the Celtics are putting up 117.4 PPG while shooting 49/42/90 and giving up just 104 PPG. The addition of The Marcus's into the starting lineup has bolstered the team's starts to game while Gordon Hayward appears to quickly be making himself back into the player he was before the injury with numbers of 30 points, 9rebounds and 8 assists last game.

New York comes into the game playing decent ball with a 4-3 mark over their last seven games with wins against Boston, New Orleans, Memphis and Milwaukee and well played games in losses to Washington and Detroit. But for the Knicks to win again they are going to have to shoot the nearly .500 from the field and .500 they shot from their last game against the Celtics. The Knicks will absolutely need to have another insane scoring and shooting night from someone like Trey Burke did last game. The Knicks have both a bottom 10 offense, shoot with great inefficient and have bottom ten defense, a defense that gives up a lot of points in the paint and a lot of points off offensive rebounds. They do very little above mediocre in the league.

The Knicks are led offensively by Tim Hardaway, Jr. with at 22.1 points a game. Unfortunately, Hardaway brings little else to the Knicks on a positive note so limiting his offense will neatralize Hardaway completely. Old Boston nemesis, Enes Kanter, who always seemed to have a good game against Boston(13.5 PPG, 9 RPG, 60% TS%in 17games% will need to be kept out of the paint and away from the offensive boards. Trey Burks, who put up 29 the last time these teams played is out for the game so for the Knicks to pull this out they will need the Celtics to struggle put up points from the get go and have another player like one
or two of their young talented players like Knox, Ntilinkina, Trier, Dotson or Robinson, who have all showed promise at times this year.

For Boston, the keys should start with coming out with an attitude and fire as the Knicks loss at home the last time they played was embarrassing and quite likely their low point of the year. The Celtics have a new starting line that is playing very well offensively, especially coming out of the blocks, Hayward and Rozier have both played better off the bench, and after missing three games, Rozier and Hayward will be joined by Jaylen Brown who missed the last 3 games after seemingly turning around his season the last four games he played before hurting his tailbone. The Celtics have been hot with Hayward putting up 30/9/8 numbers his last game, Tatum going for 18.3/6/1.5 with 1.8 steals and 50/40/100 shooting splits over his last 4 games. And of course if any team wants to beat the Celtics they have to shut down All-Star Kyrie Irving who overcame a slow start but over the 19 games has 23.4 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 6.4 APG, 1.9 SPG with a shooting line of 50.1/41.4/81.4. KI is back!!

Here's hoping for a blowout to show this team that last game against us was a fluke.

Excited for this one.

Want to see if Hayward's strong play continues.

If Brown comes off the bench, how does he look?

And can they build on and continue their current 3 game win streak.  I'm always hoping games like this are the early wins that turn into a 10+ game win streak.

Looking forward to a full team effort tonight!

Want to take this opportunity to thank everyone that contributes here, both in posting and work behind the scenes.  I've been a long time Bruins fan, but didn't catch the B-ball bug until a few years ago (IT and Stevens played a role in that).  Started out watching on off-nights, but now I find myself watching both teams equally (thanks schedulers for making 90%of games on the same night /s).  Truth be told, the community here is largely responsible for piquing and maintaining my interest, so thanks again @everyone.

Exactly. I really hate the way refs are calling screens this season, basically making it impossible for defenders to move once they get picked

I'm glad Hayward is handling the ball instead of Rozier.  I expect the offense to be much more solid in the 2nd unit with this.

Agreed, that’s why I want to see Hayward stay in this 6th man role. Need that playmaker on the bench.

All our guys just need to play better, and they are starting to do it.  It doesn't really matter who starts as long as guys are getting minutes if they are playing well.  We basically have 7 really good starters, thus we are going to have 2 guys every night off the bench who are starter quality regardless.

This is a game the C's need to keep their foot on the gas. We're gonna miss Baynes. Because Horford looks incapable of guarding their bigs.

Nice minutes from Brown, he plays better with Hayward than Kyrie.

Pace has something to do with that. We have taken 3 more shots than the KNicks.

Defense looks actually pretty good to me. A few gambles here and there, but that's fine, that's how you blow teams out..

Those were two annoying threes, but he's been shooting much less this season.  He's averaging 4 assists to 5.3 shot attempts per game.  I'm cool with that.

It definitely looked better in the closing minutes of the 2nd.  Still gotta put the clamps down defensively in the 2nd half.

If we hold the Knicks to < 44% shooting for the game I'll be content.  Unless we lose.

Smart is such a smart player and excellent playmaker when he's not looking to jack up threes. He played that fastbreak perfectly - didn't force it to Kyrie, pushed the pace, and went left to distract the defense away from Tatum trailing on the right, who nailed the J.

You realize how scoring works, right? It's temporally relative, meaning it changes in time. When I posted that it was a two possession game after us being up at one point by like 15.  ::)

That's not a crazy post given that this is a clear and well-known weakness of Brad's...

If you are criticizing the Celtics in this game, you are just looking for reasons to be negative. They have controlled this game from the outset.

I wish Brad would have a shorter leash with him, especially when he makes defensive mistakes.  He just played good defense there though.

This is the Jaylen we all hope to see on a more consistent basis. He plays well when he's depended on to score the ball and not be just a piece to a puzzle.

The Garden crowd is unusually quiet tonight.  Disappointing for a nationally televised game.  No doubt Boston has some of the best sports fans though.

Just because he's playing well tonight does not change the fact that he has a poor BBIQ. In fact, it kind of proves the opposite - he's playing much better tonight because he's coming off the bench and getting better looks as a more primary offensive option, i.e. he doesn't contribute that much else to the game.

When he's not a more primary option, he's not that good of a ball player, especially offensively, as he doesn't make others around him better due to his limited court vision, poor passing, and an inability to really make plays for others.

I like Brown and hope he continues to play like he is tonight, specifically being more aggressive taking it to the hole. But you keep beating this drum with no reasoning behind it at all.

How about a timeout before they come all the way back on us?
The knicks have outscored the Celtics this quarter by a single point. One.

You realize how scoring works, right? It's temporally relative, meaning it changes in time. When I posted that it was a two possession game after us being up at one point by like 15.  ::)

That's not a crazy post given that this is a clear and well-known weakness of Brad's...

Brown doesn't have a low BBIQ, This game showed that. He passed when he should have, took it to to the whole and finished when he was supposed to and hit shots when he was supposed to. He did the same thing all last year. He has improve his passing overall, but especially when driving to the basket. He has been an All-NBA defender for most of the last year and a half while taking on the best wing offensive players in the league. Bad BBIQ players don't do that.

It didn’t look that serious but the great thing about our depth is that even if kyrie misses a few I feel comfortable that we have more than enough depth to cover him. The player we can probably afford to lose the least is Al given Baynes is also injured.

How anyone can watch this ga,e and claim Jaylen Brown has a low BBIQ is beyond me.

?? What exactly has Brown done tonight to disprove the years of evidence that we have that he has a poor BBIQ??

I don't think Jaylen was ever a low IQ player. I've never seen it. Everyone makes mistakes but Jaylen seems to think the game very well.

If anything he probably overthinks the game at times. When he’s aggressive and plays instinctively he tends to make the right play more often than not. I like how he didn’t keep bombing away from 3 when it was obvious he was having a lot more success attacking the rim

Good win C's!.  Everyone played pretty well.  We are going to win a lot of games if we play like this every night.

The game will keep slowing down for Jaylen as he goes on. He's still really young but he's a hard worker.

excellent game offensively -- this is the offense we expected to see from the get-go.  came around later than I would have liked but if this is how they play the rest of the season, I'll take it.  only negative I have for the game is too many 3's by Smart and considering I never complain about his 3's, that's saying something

It's fine. We win when he shoots bad.

Well if Irving is going to miss some time, Terry Rozier better step it up. He wants the spotlight now's his chance.

Kyrie played too many minutes.

Kyrie played too many minutes.
Huh?  30 minutes is not too much.  In fact, the minutes distribution was almost perfect:  Nine guys with more than 17 minutes each, but none over 31.  Can't get much better than that.
